Buried in the National Library of Medicine's collection of more than 17 million items are some pretty amazing, largely unseen objects from around the world. The mesmerizing new book Hidden Treasure is filled with images of these objects that are beautiful, enlightening or disturbing, and sometimes all three. The highlights include Hitler's medical records, detailed graphic depictions of early-20th-century surgical techniques, a Russian book of clinical dermatology from 1887, and a report from the first medical responders to enter Hiroshima after the bomb. This gallery contains some of our favorite items from the book.

Experience the unparalleled beauty of acclaimed fine art photographer, Ansen Seale. Ansen Seale makes his own cameras to create these stunning images known as slit-scan photography. Moving objects are clear and still things are a blur! This produces visuals that challenge traditional perceptions of time and space, aligning it with the principles of Cubism and Abstract Expressionism. Like Cubism, which deconstructs objects into geometric forms to represent multiple perspectives simultaneously, slit-scan photography offers a fragmented and dynamic representation of reality. Similarly, it parallels Abstract Expressionism’s focus on spontaneity, motion, and the subjective experience of the artist. In the context of contemporary art, slit-scan photography serves as a bridge between photographic realism and the abstract, time-based explorations of modern painting styles, enriching the dialogue about the nature of representation and perception in art.
Daniel Becker 'Aureole' Suspended Floor Lamp in Brushed Aluminum for Moss Objects. Designed by Berlin luminary Daniel Becker and handmade to order, 'Aureole' is a highly flexible lamp that can be used as a ceiling lamp, reading lamp or floodlight. The shape of the shade has been designed specifically to ingeniously direct the light created by its integrated LEDs. By moving the shade vertically along the wire, the light direction and effect can be varied dramatically, reflecting entirely to the ceiling or to the floor. The shade is fixed to float at around 55 inches above the floor; however, the whole lamp is adjustable to a ceiling height of up to 12.7 feet. The lamp is kept in tension by a powder coated steel weight at the bottom of the wire. Price per item. Available to order in unlimited quantities with a choice of shade executed in polished aluminum, brushed brass or brushed aluminum. Custom shade, base & cable colors available on request for an additional cost and increased lead time. Standard in-stock lead time 5-6 weeks. Out of stock lead time up to 8 weeks or more. Lead time and availability are subject to change without notice. Please contact us for current lead time prior to placing time-sensitive orders. The Tilt Pendant Light lets you direct it exactly where it is needed, while emanating a soft and open light. With a matte finish shade, stainless steel guiding, and cloth-covered cord, Tilt's design makes for a high-quality and classy appearance in every conceivable environment. A self-fastening hanging mechanism provides solid purchase and cleanly holds the lamp in position. Had Jakub Zak and Nicolas Bellavance-Lecompte met and not formed a partnership, it might have seemed almost sacrilegious, a kind of fuck-you to the gods of fate. After simultaneously studying design in their native Canada, and then again at the very same university in Berlin together, the pair only became aware of one another's existence once they'd both moved to Milan to start their professional lives — Lecompte as a roving member of the Montreal-based Samare studio and Zak as a designer for Patricia Urquiola. As if the shared condition of being the only two Canadians they knew who were actively working in the Milanese design scene weren't enough, they happened to meet at the precise moment in each of their careers where they were yearning to try something independent, experimental, and new. Samare was three years old and growing quite successful, but its physical manifestation was way across the Atlantic, and it maintained a relatively narrow focus on Canadian crafts and heritage; Zak was — and still is — working full time for Urquiola, "which is pretty demanding," he says. "You reach a stage where you want to start doing projects of your own. Oeuffice is a research-minded collaboration where Nicolas and I can play with new techniques and materials in ways we might not have the opportunity to otherwise."

September 26, 2021No region has a monopoly on cutting-edge design. But one place you might reasonably have expected not to find it is Piraeus, Athens’s seaport, known for its chaotic ferry docks and seafood restaurants. Yet the cosmopolitan proprietors of Carwan Gallery, Nicolas Bellavance-Lecompte and Quentin Moyse, chose to open their showcase of far-beyond-modern collectible […]

Humorous subject matter. Face mounted Plexi. Aluminum Braced. Archival Print. ABOUT THE ARTIST Marco studied fine art at Pratt Institute and the Art Students League in New York. New York Times photography critic Gene Thornton called Marco “a Minimalist, whose images are sensual, whimsical, often surreal, always strong, and deceptively simple.” “I’ve had the pleasure of working with Phil Marco on a number of my films. Phil is a man of extraordinary talents. It seems that his passion is to take an everyday object or event, and show it in an entirely new and exciting way.” Martin Scorsese. Phil’s work is represented in MOMA, The Museum of the Moving Image, and The George Eastman Museum of Photography. His first photographs were studies for his paintings, before he launched a career in print advertising. He eventually became a Director / DP for film and television for a vast base of national and international clients with his wife Patricia as Partner and Producer. In the 1980’s and 90’s Phil was the go to person for Special Effects in Television and Cinema, also best known for his graphic conceptual still lives, and his consummate mastery of lighting, and design. He’s won many awards for his work, including numerous Cannes Lions, Cleo’s, a Grammy for his print work on the legendary “Tommy the Who” Album, and ASMP’s lifetime achievement award. He has also introduced several important technical innovations, including a new flash lighting system for cinema, and an award winning reflex viewing design for ultra high-speed cameras. But for all the technical expertise underpinning such work in extreme close-up and slow motion, Marco returns again and again to an ideal of simplicity.
