The Berlin Wall was more than 87 miles long. In June 1962, a second, parallel fence some 110 yards farther into East German territory had built. The houses contained between the fences were razed to the ground and the inhabitants relocated, thus establishing the No Man's Land that later became known as The Death Strip, raked, mine, patrolled by dogs and under constant surveillance.
