Die Berge als Reiseziel sind in den Jahrzehnten nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg von einer bis dahin kaum vorstellbaren Zahl von Menschen entdeckt worden. Die damals neuen Medien Rundfunk und Film vermittelten ihrem Publikum die Vorstellung einer heroischen Bergwelt, und das Bergsteigen selbst wurde extremer als jemals zuvor. Auch für den Alpen-verein führte diese Entwicklung zu erheblichen Veränderungen. Politisch positionierte er sich zunehmend deutschnational und antisemitisch und spielte damit eine wichtige Rolle bei der Durchdringung von Alltag und Freizeit mit nationalsozialistischem Gedankengut. Das reich bebilderte Buch führt in diese Zeit zurück und erzählt von grossen alpinistischen Leistungen, aber auch von der Entwicklung des Bergsteigens zum Breitensport. Untersucht wird die politische Geschichte des Alpenvereins und seine besondere Stellung als staatsübergreifender Verband in Deutschland, Österreich und Südtirol. Darüber hinaus werden wesentliche Tätigkeitsfelder des Alpenvereins vorgestellt, die bis heute nicht an Bedeutung verloren haben: Naturschutz, Expeditionswesen, Wissenschaft und Bildung. Das Buch ist Ergebnis eines mehrjährigen Forschungsprojektes und präsentiert für ein breites, an der Bergwelt interessiertes Publikum wertvolles neues Wissen. Es bereichert die Faszination an den Bergen um eine historische Dimension.

I have a love/hate relationship with slide film. The colours are second to none and the contrast is uniquely crisp. However, the costs associated with shooting slide film seem to be increasing day to day and finding a lab that can develop it is as rare as hen’s teeth. But, to get the results I was looking for in this project, it was necessary.
