May Day came and went so quickly for us and by the time I got the new ribbons for our Maypole it was pouring rain, even though we had a 5 meter high pole that Saxon had cut down for us. So we were unable to celebrate with the usual singing and dancing around the Maypole. So for Moran's birthday she wanted to have a Maypole and we made this one from scratch. Here is how we made it! Materials: * A pole of your choice, we cut down a tree from our block, but in the past we have used a very long piece of timber, a tall tomato stake (our first maypole was this as our children were all small then) or you could use a plastic pipe of some sort. * A hole to put the pole in and a strong lad to dig it, or a lass if you prefer. * Ribbon to length. Our pole length was 3 meters above ground with a half meter buried . So our ribbon was meters long, they could have been longer but this was more than adequate The colour and how many depends on personal choice. Our Maypole has 10 ribbons of various colours, but 10 because that is how many children we have at home at the moment. You can add or take off the ribbons at will. * metal U shape fence staples Here is an image link These are to tie the ribbon they can be taken off when not in use * hammer, shovel and perhaps a sledge hammer * flowers to decorate the top. We used silk ones as it is Autumn season here and not many flowers in our garden. * participants First off lay your pole across two 'ponies' as we call them, builders saw horses to steady the pole while you work on it. You may want to dig your hole now and check you have enough depth, for safety reasons, prior to completing your Maypole. The next thing to do is to hammer in your U shape staples around the top of the pole about 10-15 cm from the top. You can measure accurately if you like but I just 'eye-balled them in' Take your flowers and place them in and around the U shapes, with blossom part upward, holding them steady with one or two further down the pole if needed. You can see from this view that the flowers are amongst the U shapes and yet still see the U shapes for tying on the ribbon. Ribbon waiting to be tied on to the pole. The ribbon is simply tied on with a knot that can be taken off as desired. You could add more than one colour from each U shape but we did not All ready to be placed in the pre dug hole I just love the way it looks with the flowers and ribbons on top. Questa estroversione stagionale,fa si che ci sia una predisposizione verso nuovi amori e amicizie e al rafforzamento delle relazioni già esistenti; è tempo di stimolare la nostra fertilità interiore. ORIGINI E SIGNIFICATI: Beltane(fuoco luminoso) è il momento in cui,con la bella stagione,il bestiame veniva portato al pascolo dopo la benedizione dei falò accesi. Tradizionalmente si saltava attraverso i falò accesi x predire l'altezza del raccolto in base ai salti effettuati. Beltane celebra l'amore,l'attrazione,l'unione e tutti i grandi e piccoli desideri istintivi. In questa occasine si eleggevano un re e una regina di maggio che erano chiamati John Thomas e Lady Jane;il popolo danzava attorno ad un palo detto Palo di Maggio che simboleggiava l'unione tra il maschile(il palo-simbolo fallico) e il femminile(la terra). Si raccoglievano fiori, e si passavano notti insieme sotto le stelle nel bosco. Beltane è il periodo del latte e del miele,in cui noi pagani dedichiamo più tempo al piacere. Siamo nelle ore mattutine della Ruota dell'Anno, è il tempo migliore per fiorire e sbocciare. La mucca e l'ape sono i simboli della Dea in questo periodo dell'anno e in questa festa. La capacità della mucca di produrre il latte e in genere di tutte le madri che allattano i figli è qualcosa di straordinario,così come straordinarie sono le api che producono il miele che è la sostanza naturale più buona del mondo. Il simbolo delle corna della mucca è inoltre collegato con quello della madre terra in tutte le culture del mondo:in Egitto la dea Iside aveva un copricapo formato da due corna vaccine che racchiudevano la luna piena o il disco solare,Hathor è la mucca celestiale che con gli spruzzi del suo latte ha dato origine alle stelle:la Via Lattea;poi abbiamo la cornucopia romana,simbolo di ricchezza e abbondanza legato alla Madre Terra. Un ritrovamento importante degli scavi archeologici ha riportato alla luce una figura d'argilla con la testa e corna bovine circondate da api. Questa figura è da considerare ,soprattutto x la somiglianza con gli organi genitali interni della riproduzione femminile. In Lituania una forma di divinazione (seguita x lo più da donne) consisteva nel versare cera d'api nell'acqua e di interpretare le forme che assumeva. Le api,l'oro e il miele venivano associati alla Dea come simbolo di lavoro armonioso,di cooperazione,modestia e regalità. Si credeva che le api non avrebbero dato il miele se l'apicoltore non fosse stato buono ed onesto. In molti casi,poi ,l'alveare,simbolo di dolcezza e di qualcosa che dona la vita come l'utero.Le api simboleggiano anche l'immortalità e la longevità, infatti anticamente si credeva che il miele ela cera d'api preservassero dall'invecchiamento e dalla morte. Nella tradizione germanica si credeva che le api sbucassero da un regno sotterraneo paradisiaco dove vivevano con le fate. In Grecia i templi dedicati a Demetra erano custoditi da delle sacerdotesse chiamate "melisse" cioè api. Il Dio indiano Visnu è rappresentato come un'ape blu posato su un fiore di loto che rappresenta la Dea. Secondo i cristiani le api furono originate dalle lacrime di Cristo e ciò ci riporta alla divinità nordica Freya le cui lacrime erano dorate. Beltane viene celebrato con miele,focacce di farina d'avena e formaggi. CELEBRAZIONI:Possiamo celebrare questa festa in vari modi, per esempio piantare un palo di maggio nella terra o ornare un albero con ghirlande di fiori. Possiamo attaccare nastri rossi (colore della passione ) ai rami dei biancospini per propiziare amore,fortuna o guarigione. Si può accendere la vigilia di Beltane un fuoco all'aperto o anche,se non si può,si può accendere una candela rossa dicendo:"bella signora della terra gioisci! Il grande cervo viene a cercare la sua sposa perchè l'estate è arrivata!" Poi si passa in mezzo ai fuochi per tre volte meditando sui misteri della fertilità. Consumare bevande e dolci e lasciarne un pò per la terra e le sue creature, questo è un rituale che può essere festeggiato con il proprio partner terminando con un'unione sessuale. CAMMINO ESOTERICO:Samhain e Yule avevano delle finalità materiali che servivano a soddisfare bisogni primari come denaro,lavoro ,cibo ecc... A l livello spirituale il loro ruolo è quello di rendere meno duro l'accesso all'inconscio lunare e poterlo in seguito purificare. Gli ermetisti chiamavano quest'azione l'unione dell'acqua con il fuoco, del fisso col volatile,dell'aquila col serpente. In Yule e Samhain l'infinito spirituale viene solo intuito,mentre la prima vera opera di purificazione avviene solo con Imbolc. L'azione di Imbolc è quella di rimuovere dall'inconscio lunare la componente dolorosa. Grazie all'azione catartica di Imbolc,l'Io ha potuto crearsi nuovi schemi di comportamento. All'Equinozio di primavera viene posta particolare attenzione alla realizzazione personale nella sfera affettiva. Con l'Equinozio termina la cosidetta fase"solve",che scioglie il nostro essere dai nodi dell'inconscio lunare,rendendo al persona di nuovo disponibile a nuove esperienze,rinnovando energie e disponibilità. A Beltane inizia la seconda parte del cammino la cosidetta fase "coagula",dove si consolidano i risultati raggiunti.
