Welcome back to my blog:) It's week eight of the Vintage Housewife Sew Along CLICK HERE if you need to download the Sew Along Guide and CLICK HERE if you are just joining us and need to read the Bee Prepared post that tells you all about this sew along:) We are using Vintage Happy 2 Fabric... And my new Sew Simple Shapes Vintage Housewife To make the Vintage Housewife Quilt 74" x 82" These are the blocks that we have done so far: BAKING BLOCK CANNING BLOCK IRONING BLOCK TYPEWRITER BLOCK TELEPHONE BLOCK TELEVISION BLOCK CLEANING BLOCK Are you ready to get started on the Sewing Block? Sew Simple Shapes used for this block: J-15 J-18 J-20 J-21 J-32 J-33 For the ruler work you will need to trace a rectangle 3 1/2" x 4" and 2" x 10" onto the interfacing (page 12) Prepared Straight Bias Strips: 1" aqua - 2" long after pressing both ends under for dial. 2 - 2" no pressing under just press them both in half for the feet. 1" green - 1 1/2" long no pressing ends under for large spool. 3/4" yellow - 1 1/4" long no pressing ends under for small spool. 1/4" gray - 3/4" long after pressing both ends under for presser foot bottom 1 1/2" no pressing under for the top of presser foot. 1/4" lt.brown - 2 - 1 1/2" long after pressing both ends under for large spool 1 1/4" long after pressing both ends under for small spool You will need assortment of tiny Cute Little Buttons for the pin heads and also a red Cute Little Button for the knob center:) Before you sew this shape that you traced for the bottom of the sewing machine... You will need to sew these two fabrics together and press the seam open. After sewing...turn...shape and press! Here is the piece that you traced for the patchwork block. Place it just like this onto your mat ... and then draw a diagonal line from corner to corner like this. Place all of your 1 1/2" squares (ten of them) onto your design board like this and then sew them into rows... and then sew the rows together. Press the seams open for less bulk in the appliqué. Now you can pin onto the traced interfacing like this. This is what the back looks like with the seams pressed open:) After sewing trim off the excess... Turn and shape:) Now you have a cute little patchwork block for your sewing machine! Sew all of the remaining shapes and trim. Before turning you will need to clip the inner curves and cleavage areas on these 3 shapes that I have on my mat. All shaped and pressed and ready to go! The following are photos of my pinning and glue basting process... Use the ruler to ensure that your shapes do not "grow" I used a backstitch and 3 strands of gray for the embroidered pins. Cute Little Buttons for the pin heads and also one in the center of the tomato pincushion top. And a larger red one for the knob center:) All ready for applique... Trimmed...borders on and buttons added:) SEWING BLOCK should measure 14 1/2" square before we sew it into the quilt. I hope you have fun putting this block together...I certainly did! Next week we will begin the Clothesline Block xx Lori I just have to show you this classic photo of Lucy and her sewing machine because it's a favorite of mine.
