Pros and cons distress tolerance skills involve thinking about the positive or negative course of action toward an unhealthy urge. This skill is a good tool for thinking through the short-term and long-term consequences of an action. Without carefully weighing the pros and cons, individuals are likely to make impulsive choices that may lead to harmful consequences. The DBT Pros And Cons Skill handout gives a simple overview of this skill. It explains the pros and cons skill in three steps - describe the impulsive behavior the client is trying to avoid, make a list of the pros and cons of giving in to the behavior, and lastly, create a list of pros and cons of resisting the behavior. This handout can help kids and teens make more logical decisions rather than emotional ones. They can list their pros and cons on a separate sheet of paper, while caring adults can support them in turning to the pros and cons skill during distressing moments. The skill can be further applied with our DBT Pros and Cons Worksheet. *This item is an instant digital download. The DBT House is a framework in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) that allows clients to explore their inner world. This “inner world” — which includes their values, emotions, hopes, and coping strategies — is represented by a specific room or level of their metaphorical house. The DBT House Worksheet is an art-based activity that features two drawings of a house, and both houses have different sections or rooms. One drawing asks questions that serve as prompts for the client to explore an aspect of their life, while the other drawing lets them write down their answers. For example, the question “What values govern your life?” in the foundation of their DBT house might be answered with “courage and authenticity.” As kids and teens complete this activity, they can increase their self-awareness, which leads to improved emotional regulation and healthier relationships. If your child needs help identifying coping strategies for the chimney of their DBT house, this DBT Coping Skills bundle will give them ideas. *This item is an instant digital download. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) is effective in treating adults and adolescents, and now it is being adapted for younger children. DBT is also described as a transdiagnostic treatment, which means that it can be applied across various psychiatric disorders. Research shows that among the different skills taught, mindfulness and distress tolerance are highly valuable to adolescents. The What Is DBT PDF handout offers valuable information on the nature of DBT, how it helps clients, one of its primary goals, and the skills training modules taught. It uses clear and simple language that’s accessible to younger clients as well as illustrations to hold their interest. This handout helps kids and teens appreciate the relevance of DBT skills in their everyday lives, especially outside of therapy sessions. Parents may set aside time to practice coping skills together, such as immersing themselves in the present moment (under the mindfulness module) and radical acceptance (under the distress tolerance module). Our DBT Skills Introduction handout is a helpful add-on for a 1-page overview of each of the core DBT modules - Distress Tolerance, Mindfulness, Emotion Regulation, Interpersonal Effectiveness, and Walking The Middle Path. *This item is an instant digital download.
