It's the beginning of the year, and you have a whole new class that is sitting in front of you. You don't know them besides the information you got on the student information card. You know the first few weeks are getting to know them. Both personally and academically. You also know the first few
Making a Self-Portrait is always a fun and enriching activity. I am going to describe today's learning experience in doing a self-portrait. First I showed the paper the students would use and I projected it on a white board. You can use a smart board of course or just chart paper I recommend having something to model drawing yourself. We defined self-portrait and thought about which shapes we have in our bodies. I asked a volunteer to come to the front and asked the kids to help me draw her face. I add all details the children suggested. We were happy with the results. I modeled using a mirror to look at my face and draw it. After I finished my self-portrait I asked for the students input. They were fantastic. They asked me to add my hanging little camera purse, earrings, glasses, my toes showing because I was wearing sandals, patterns from my dress, and more. I then handed a mirror and a paper to each student. The kids had a ball looking at their faces in the mirror They could work sitting or standing. And look how this girl is so focused on her drawing. Even the younger ones did an amazing job. Princesses did a great job too. After they were all ready we shared them with the group. I have different ways of sharing work. We had targeted our audience. It was our friends and our parents as we thought that this would be a great portfolio piece. The way we chose to share today was for me to hold each drawing and ask the class to tell what they liked about the self-portrait I was holding. And here are some more self-portrait samples. You can download the self-portrait template by clicking on the picture below. If you are doing portfolio with your class I have made two templates that can be useful. One to be used at the beginning of the school year and another one for the end of the school year. This way we can see the progress of drawing a self-portrait. Click on the pictures below to download the templates.

This water lab is a super fun way to introduce nonlinear functions in an algebra class. The math department at my school uses this lab as a way to start the school year in Algebra 2. The students love it, and by the end of the lab every student understands what it means to be an algebraic function!

The last 2 weeks of school, we've been working on our last part of our memory books. I posted about them before, you can read about them {HERE} and HERE Don't they look so beautiful all finished?! I love how they turn out! Some years I bind them with a comb, and other years, I just staple them together. It all depends on the time and volunteers. haha! I really love making these memory books each year. You can totally see the change that they make from August to May. I'm always SO amazed! So these are the last set of pages that we've been working on... I took their pictures and printed them at Walgreens and they glued them on their self portrait page. They finished thieir "Favorites" page... I also took their measurement with a piece of yarn and they put it in their coin envelope. I think next year I am going to take a picture of the school so they can glue it on there... I never give them a picture of me for this page - I love to see their drawings of me! AND, there is a file in the download of editable pages! All the pages that you can glue pictures down on are editable so that you can add the pictures on the pages digitally and then print them with the picture already on them! I also like to add text boxes and type in the students' names under the class picture. You can do whatever works best for you! I do this for our "Class Picture" page. I add in a big "good" picture of us all and type in all the names. Then I add in some goofy pictures for fun - one of the beginning of the year and one from the end. We also have an "autograph" day with our grade level, (I'll post about that later) and that is added to the end of the book... and the a note from the teacher is on the last cover page. I've had some requests from friends in other grades, so I have a PreK, Kindergarten, and 2nd grade edition too! These are just the end of the year pages - here's what is all included! And now there is a vertical version!! I have added 3rd grade to the list of grades in my store. Check them out in my TpT store {HERE}.

Students circulate through the classroom and meet new friends! Here's a great team building activity I like to have on hand for the first week of school! Use "Find a Friend" for a quick structure to allow for student interaction, to model classroom expectations for movement in the room, and to review and practice classroom manners. With the recording sheet in hand, students circulate through the room to pair up with a new friend. Students greet each other and take turns to ask a question related to the grid. For example, student A will say say to student B, "Do you like to read?" Student B will reply, "Yes, I do like to read." Student B will then sign his name in the corresponding box on Student A's paper. (If the student replies with a "no", I encourage my first graders to try again and to ask about something else on the paper. After all, we have different likes and dislikes.) Before rotating, students thank each other. Students mix and pair again with a new partner to complete the grid as time allows. I do remind the children that they may only sign someone's paper one time. These activities promote positive interaction, movement, and community. It also allows for me to model (...again) how to stand up and carry the paper/pencil, how to find a partner quietly (by making eye contact), how to say "please" and "thank you", and how to speak using an inside voice. Click here to download this "Find a Friend" activity. link Here's One for Color Words. Click on the image below to download this "Find a Friend" activity. (Some children may need to have support with recognizing and reading the words.) Like Those? Here's one for number words, too! Click on the image below to download this "Find a Friend" activity. 1-2-3 Come Do Some "M & M" Stuff With Me I'm a firm believer in making things personal for students. If you relate things to their world, you quickly grab their attention and enthusiasm for the activity follows. With that in mind, I wanted to design some sort of "me math," where students could use a variety of math concepts to answer questions about themselves. I find that most students really enjoy sharing this sort of information, and the result of showing them all the math that is a personal part of them, might be quite surprising to some. The idea of "me math" led to doing something with an M&M theme. I originally toyed with the idea of each student making a colorful M&M character and filling it with "me math" information, but after I made a list of all of the number-related things that I could think of, that students might be interested in sharing, my list was so long that the idea of getting this inside an M&M creature, was now out. When I was researching "me math" to see if anyone else out there was doing something along that line, I found quite a few poster and pennant ideas, so I didn't want to go that route. No one had done a booklet, or delved into some deeper math extensions, thus my M&M Math & Me booklet was born. To conserve paper, there are 2 pages on each master. Pick and choose whatever is appropriate for your grade level. Your booklet can be a few pages, or add several math extensions to practice more standards and make a longer booklet, that students can work on a little bit each day for the first or last week of school. I've included basic counting, measuring, greater & less than, equations, addition, subtraction, ordinal numbers, time, odd & even, skip counting by 2's, place value, number sentences, comparison, tally marks, and even fractions! From teeth to travels, I think you'll find the personal math questions interesting and fun. I was especially excited to find a Scrabble and M&M font to use with the My Name Math pages. Choose simple math concepts for kinders, or add a few more difficult pages and send the booklet home to have parents help their child with. Click on the link to view/download the M&M Math & Me booklet. If you're looking for a "me math" poster that your kiddos can make, click on the link to take a look at Melissa Machan's Math About Me FREEBIE. I absolutely LOVE the poster poem she wrote.
