This PDF can be used to make a set of Three/Four Part cards that will help children learn about some of the most common animals that act as pollinators. For each term there is a picture only card, a word only card, a description card, and a picture and word card (control). Terms included are: pollinators, bees, butterflies, moths, beetles, and hummingbirds. This set of cards is the perfect addition to any study of Botany. To prolong the life of this matierial, cards should be printed onto card stock, cut, and laminated prior to use.
Wonderful mix of naturally-farmed* flower seeds sure to bring a long season of color and a variety of pollinators to your garden! Mix is sustainably grown, harvested, and packaged by our shop owner, and contains a mix of tall Zinnias (Zinnia elegans), Mexican Sunflowers (Tithonia rotundifolia), African Marigolds (Tagetes erecta), Tall Goldenrod (Solidago altissima), and White Wood Aster (Symphyotricum racemosum). All varieties thrive best in amended soil, full sun. Zinnias and African marigolds range from 3- 4' tall; Mexican sunflowers are -7' tall, Asters and Goldenrod are both in the 4-7' tall range. If you let them, they will all happily self-sow, for years of color and continued enjoyment! Our mix is great for attracting butterflies, moths, bees, wasps, other pollinators, and seed-eating birds to your garden, and for providing a long season of color and flowers for cutting. In our north Georgia garden, we have blooms from May into October or the first frost with this mix! Some seeds are difficult to hand-separate from seed hulls, there may be occasional non-seed material mixed in - this comes from being a small family shop! For that reason, we generously size our seed collection packages, and recommend you sprinkle them in the prepared bed, rather than planting each seed separately. About 1/2 c of seed mix *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* Planting directions: *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* Plant in spring after last frost by generously sprinkling seeds on prepared ground and covering about ½” deep with loose soil. Keep watered during dry spells until well-established. *My garden is non-certified organic: no synthetic pesticides, fungicides, insecticides, or fertilizers in use, ever! We are too small to certify as "USDA Organic" but comply fully with USDA organic guidelines.

We finished up our butterfly/moth study this week with a little butterfly sipping experiment. The students used their butterfly proboscis (straw) to sip nectar (apple juice) from a flower. After we did this little experiment, the students had to come back and write what they learned about how butterflies eat: Here were some of our centers this week: Matching time to the hour and half hour. Unscramble the butterfly sentences: Sort butterfly nouns and verbs: Next week, we are learning about insects so I will be carrying over some of the activities that are in my Butterfly Bonanza unit. All the above activities are included in this unit and you can check them out by clicking on the picture. For our writing center next week, the kids will be making "Bugs on a Log" and writing a "how to" telling how they did it. These are my old posters that I used for this little activity (back when I literally cut and pasted everything!) These are the ingredients you need to make "Bugs on a Log": Now that I am becoming adept at using the handy dandy laptop, I have updated the old posters into these: After they make their "Bugs on a Log", they will write how to do it on this sequencing/writing form: Grab yourself a copy by clicking on one of the pictures above. To make these posters, I used: Graphics From the Pond http://frompond.blogspot.com Happy Weekend Friends!
A beautifully illustrated, informative book for children introducing them to bugs that creep, crawl, bite, fly, and more! From moths and beetles to worms and spiders, the world is crawling with fascinating bugs. The Big Book of Bugs is the first fact-filled book for children to explore the vast array of creepy-crawlies that share our Earth. In the first pages, children learn that bugs live nearly everywhere on the planet and gain tips on how to become a young bug spotter.
