This quilt has been done for awhile but I haven't yet shared it here with you! If you follow me on Instagram you might have seen me working on these EPP Dahlia blocks over the past couple of years. From start to finish this was about a two-year project, although I did set it aside for awhile to work on other things. The flowers are all pieced using english paper piecing techniques. I tried not to rush this project - I really wanted to take my time on it and just enjoy choosing fabrics and piecing each block. Each flower uses two different prints for the petals and a contrasting print for the center. I tried not to repeat any print in the quilt so it would have a great scrappy feel too it. But I also stayed within the coral / yellow / green families so that it would feel coordinated and not quite as crazy as a full-on scrappy quilt might. I knew this would be a longer project so right in the beginning I did a fabric pull and gathered any prints I thought might work. They lived in this basket (isn't it pretty?) and it made it much faster and easier to grab the prints to use for a flower without having to go through everything in my closet each time. I admit...there are a couple flowers that I feel have a bit too much contrast between the two petal prints, but that just adds to the overall character of the finished quilt, right? After appliqueing each flower to a background square (Moda Bella 98), I added some green corner triangles to each block. I felt like it needed more green in the quilt, and I like that the green corners also help tie the blocks to one another as well. Edited to add: the background squares are cut at 10.5" square, and the corner flip triangles are cut at 2.5" square. For the backing I used a coordinating solid yellow, and I quilted it with a longarm design called Soho. To keep with the scrappy feel of the quilt I went with a green scrappy binding and I love how it looks! If you're a fan of scrappy bindings, here's a tip for you - As I'm binding quilts, if I have any binding left over I'll toss it in a special bin I keep just for binding scraps. Then when I need a scrappy binding I can dig through that bin and usually I'm able to find what I need. And that was the case with this quilt - it was SO nice to be able to just grab them and sew. I didn't need to pull out any FQ or yardage to cut binding strips. This binding scraps bin is a great place to toss unused jelly roll strips too! Growing up behind the Iron Curtain of Soviet Russia, pretty dresses were hard to come by. One day, my mum surprised me with the most beautiful dress I’d ever seen. (To this day, I don’t know where she managed to find it.) It had a smocked yoke embroidered with tiny, bright flowers and big clusters of French knots. Fairwyn is a top-down round yoke pullover. It begins with a nod to the smocking but without all the work--a simple slip-stitch pattern does the trick. The girlish embroidery is replaced with a more sophisticated lace design and Japanese bobbles complete the look of the French knots. The sweater has a less common method of raising the back. A unique but straightforward technique that I absolutely love, as it doesn’t disrupt the neck area with short rows, yet produces the desired end result. If you are not familiar with this method I’m sure you’ll love this nifty addition to your knitting techniques arsenal! Once the yoke is done, the sleeve stitches are separated and put on hold until the body is complete. The rest of the body is worked in plain stockinette, perfect for your knit night or for a spot of TV knitting. Let’s face it, everyone has seen these somewhere and tried a version whether knit or crochet. A couple of years ago, before I found Ravelry, I saw a knit pair and tried to make it in crochet. Many attempts by trial and error have led to these notes. (Many attempts that probably could have been avoided if I had found Ravelry earlier.) I have never written a pattern before, so I don’t guarantee anything. Some of it had been scribbled down here and there, but lots was still just in my head. Someone has asked for an account of what I have done, so here goes… Soles can be made either with or without the non-slip sole. I do make these in many sizes, shorter/longer, thinner/fatter, smaller/taller, but after a week of trying just to explain one pair, I no longer have the brain power to explain the other sizes. Hopefully, after you’ve made one you’ll understand the process. I have included a variation to do the black trimmed version, more like an actual shoe. Personally, I prefer the two colour version, but as I said before, didn’t want to leave anything out. And since I didn’t have a black trim one around to photograph, it became the model for most of this. Let’s face it, everyone has seen these somewhere and tried a version whether knit or crochet. A couple of years ago, before I found Ravelry, I saw a knit pair and tried to make it in crochet. Many attempts by trial and error have led to these notes. (Many attempts that probably could have been avoided if I had found Ravelry earlier.) I have never written a pattern before, so I don’t guarantee anything. Some of it had been scribbled down here and there, but lots was still just in my head. Someone has asked for an account of what I have done, so here goes… Soles can be made either with or without the non-slip sole. I do make these in many sizes, shorter/longer, thinner/fatter, smaller/taller, but after a week of trying just to explain one pair, I no longer have the brain power to explain the other sizes. Hopefully, after you’ve made one you’ll understand the process. I have included a variation to do the black trimmed version, more like an actual shoe. Personally, I prefer the two colour version, but as I said before, didn’t want to leave anything out. And since I didn’t have a black trim one around to photograph, it became the model for most of this. Growing up behind the Iron Curtain of Soviet Russia, pretty dresses were hard to come by. One day, my mum surprised me with the most beautiful dress I’d ever seen. (To this day, I don’t know where she managed to find it.) It had a smocked yoke embroidered with tiny, bright flowers and big clusters of French knots. Fairwyn is a top-down round yoke pullover. It begins with a nod to the smocking but without all the work--a simple slip-stitch pattern does the trick. The girlish embroidery is replaced with a more sophisticated lace design and Japanese bobbles complete the look of the French knots. The sweater has a less common method of raising the back. I love antique holy cards, and this is one of the most beautiful I've ever seen. It makes a perfect accent piece as a devotional item in your home. The holy card it's based on was done by Philip Kemper from Dayton, Ohio, in the 1880s. He ended up printing millions in over 230 languages and distributing them all over the world. He did it to promote a devotion to the Sacred Heart. The 12 promises in the writings of Sister Margaret Mary had been discerned by someone else, but Mr. Kemper tabulated them and put them on the cards.
