Favouring slower paced creative endeavours at the back end of last year, I continued with my very early experimentation with embroidery. After being blown away by the works of art in the thread painting community on Instagram, I wanted to give it a go to see if I could pull it off. I wasn't fully co
My birthday week has started! I can't seem to just celebrate it on the day. It usually takes a week to fit everyone and everything in! My actual birthday is on 28th Aug. Starting from last night (Sunday night) my lovely friend Mel took me into the city for dinner at Mamasita, a Mexican restaurant. We had a lovely night and managed to get home in one piece! The next event is on Thursday when 12 of my friends and colleagues come to have lunch with me here at the campus. Then on Thursday evening I will join Mr Notjustnat and my daughter Kitiya for dinner in the city. Speaking of the city, I don't know if you have heard that Melbourne has been voted the world's most liveable city in 2014. I'm so glad to be living in Melbourne! Now where was I? Have been a bit busy lately with the Tree-House Studio. Every evening we are working on assembling the double wardrobes we got from IKEA to use for storage space. There are some updated photos at the end of this post. In between all that I squeezed in some dyeing and stitching. I posted the photo of that eucalyptus branch on Instagram and Facebook a couple of weeks ago. If you love eucalyptus trees as much as I do, you would put all the nice pieces of them in your dye bundle! I didn't open it until the weekend and the result is very pleasing, don't you think? These three bundles included the one above. I was asked if I soaked and mordant them with iron and how long I steamed them for. I only wet the fabric before wrapping it. The answer is. No soaking or mordant and steamed for 1 hour. A week after steaming I just let them sit (dried) in the steamer. The outside bundle was completely dried when I opened it, but the inner part of the bundle was still damp. Another shot after the leaves were removed! Fantastic effect of two types of eucalyptus leaves used. This one was wrapped around a copper pipe. Another bundle was wrapped around a steel pipe and only used one type of leaves eucalyptus (Sideroxylon) in this bundle. Putting them next to each other makes a lovely palette of colours. I don't think I can separate them. They are made for each other! I dabble with a little stitching in my spare time. I started another simplicity block way way back. I wanted to use a couching stitch over a string that I had used for a dyed bundle. I finally got round to doing it and quite like the effect! Another little stitching is this journal cover using fabric dyed with coffee, rust, eucalyptus leaves on vintage Japanese fabric. Prep work on the cover ready for Coptic binding into a journal. I will show you again after I finished it. Below are some photos of the Tree-House studio close to completion. The railing has been installed. The steps and railing timber will need to be oiled to bring out the natural colour and grain of the timber. Inside painting and flooring is all completed. It's a lovely, light space. Exactly what I need. The first piece of furniture are the double wardrobes we got from IKEA. This is one wardrobe made up of two modules. After two evenings we managed to assemble it. Both wardrobes are going on the far left corner of the room. One of the two sliding doors is in place. The mirrors on the doors will make the room look bigger. There is another door to assemble, and then we have to start over again for the second wardrobe. Both wardrobes will be placed side by side along the same wall. It's looking good so far. Thanks for checking-in on my blog. I'm sorry if I haven't been to visit many blogs lately. From now on I hope to get back to doing more visiting again. Hope you are all keeping well. Spring is on the way here in Melbourne. Until next time. Nat
Lately I've become obsessed with Cross Stitching. I used to cross stitch all the time when I was a kid but pretty much abandoned it as I grew up mainly because I hated the design options. I hate the country style stuff and teddy bears and although I like flowers, hate floral prints and most cross stitching patterns fit into these categories. I made this one in college... I have no idea what sparked me to try it, but I decided that I'd try my hand at making my own cross stitch patterns so I could stitch something I actually like. The first one came out great and I've gone nuts! I've drafted up about a dozen patterns and have so many ideas for more. I've only had time to stitch one of them so far and I'm about 3/4 of the way through a second one. Here is the first (excuse the fact that it is wrinkly and isn't framed yet) .......... I don't have a bunch of finished projects to show, but that has never stopped me from sharing! So here are a few patterns that I have created so far.... I've posted a few up for sale on eBay, but I am so excited to share these that I'm offering up my first design for crazy super cheap. Only a buck. This one... If you liked the X-files or UFOs, and you like to cross stitch and you have a dollar, click the button below. The finished design will be just under 5"x7" if you use 14 count aida cloth. It uses 15 colors and the DMC color chart is included with the pattern. 7/10/14 UPDATE: I have removed the offer for the cheap pattern. I gave out way more of these at a buck than I ever intended because I kept forgetting to come back and shut this post down. Sorry.... but the deal is over so if you'd like to purchase a pattern, they are still pretty cheap at only $4.99 in my Etsy store.

Hope everyone is doing well. Went out to hang with my good cosplay friend Grace and her friends today who were down in town to buy fabric for their cosplays and yeah, was good fun seeing them. There was no mail when I got home and it was already about 2.30pm-ish, so started cooking lunch and yadayada. 30 minutes later I hear my doorbell ringing and the mailman gives me our mail and 3 packages for me. SUPERRR HAPPYYYY because i was waiting for these packages to arrive as they included: - A cheap Ebay long wallet (because I always wanted a long male wallet ever since seeing japanese men in japan having it and looking classy with it) - and the rest of my beads and the elastic to make the bracelet from the anime manga 「Sukitte ii na yo」 Gathered all my equipments, tools, materials and reference together; ready to get started on the bracelet. All the beads and elastic was purchased on Ebay and colors was selected based on using references of the bracelet from the anime. To search for these beads, type in "irregular beads" or "chips beads" in the search bar and they should come up. The elastic is just black jewellery elastic. Started making these babies for Yamato (myself) first and just tried to follow the reference as much as I can for any specific pattern but in the end, I just made it really random and made sure some of the beads where evenly distributed. This is what came out after threading the beads. Was actually quite happy how it turned out because it was really similar to the cosplay style and also somewhat similar to the anime style. So that was good. Now, the problem I had was ending and tying it together to form the bracelet. The thing is with this bracelet is that, its not a simple joint- there's actually some form of braid or knot and ends with two dangling ends. It took me a while to figure it out so i came up with this: It looks somewhat accurate to the anime style BUT honestly just really messy and I wasn't really happy. So I posted that picture on Instagram stating how I wasn't too happy with the ending joints, and had some comments from friends on Instagrams and Twitter showing me about square-knots. So i looked around and was linked to a video about square-knots, attempted and practiced with hemp cords and yeah, decided to try it out and work on Mei's bracelet. This was the result with the square knot: Super duper happy with how Mei's bracelet turned out with the square knots. I used different clamps with loops so that the black rope can stay in place and yeah. Got the hang of square knots and decided to fix up my bracelet for Yamato and got this: So here are the couple bracelets for both Yamato and Mei from Sukitte ii na yo. Was so much fun to make and since I have quite alot of spare beads and elastic, I decided to make another pair for friends who were also cosplaying Yamato and Mei, as well as making a couple for as gifts for friends. I know it's still quite sloppy but I think it'll do for now :D ANYHOW time to sleep, almost 4am. Wow time flies when you're blogging, i started blogging like at 3.15am I think but yeah. Must prepare self for intense hot weather tomorrow and IKEA at night with my good friend Sera. Till then, will most likely blog tomorrow. Goodnight!
I have to be honest, woven t-shirts are usually not my friend. I have a hard time fitting them and bias tape makes me cringe (but so do facings)….it’s so hard. But, before my trip to Utah I really wanted to sew up some new rayon tops and was so happy I did – there’s […]

I wanted to expand on the hair tutorial that is included in my new "Lanky Lily" doll pattern for you. I realize the one in the tutorial is a little vague and I hope this gives you all a better idea of the process. I promise you it is very easy, once you get the feel for it. To start you will need to place your pins, it'll look like your doll has a pin mohawk. Now leave a good length of tail at the side of the head and begin wrapping a single strand of yarn around the pins. I like to go back and forth in a figure 8, wrapping each pin along the center part at least twice, but that will differ depending on the yarn thickness. It's a good idea to tack down the sides at the half way point as well as the end. I don't use any particular stitch to do this, but it's important to make sure you catch all your loops with your thread. This area will be covered with the pigtails so it doesn't have to be perfect, but the neater you are the easier it is later. To start sewing down the center hide your knot behind the hairline. Sew down the center part using a back stitch, making sure to secure the loops as you go. When you come to the end knot your thread and tuck your ends behind the hairline. Repeat the process on the other side. When you are sewing down your center part try to overlap you new stitches with the ones on the other side to avoid gaps forming. To make the pigtails, first wrap your yarn around a book (or piece of cardboard, whatever's handy) several times, until you are happy with the amount you have. This will be split between the two sides. Cut down the center of your bundle of yarn, lay it out and split it up. Knot a length of thread tightly around the center of each bundle of yarn, making a long "pom-pom". Sew the pigtails to the side of the head with small stitches securing the center of each to the side of head. Trim the yarn to your perfect length and you are done!!! If you'd like to give the Lank Lily pattern a try go check out the NimblePhish Etsy shop!! Thank you and I hope this is a helpful tutorial.
