If you're giving Spanish interactive notebooks a try for the first time in your Spanish classes, you may be wondering what supplies you will need to be off to a successful start. Here's my detailed photo list of 7 things (plus a bonus FREE download) that you need to get started on your interactive notebook journey! **Totally confused about Spanish interactive notebooks and what they are?? START HERE with this blog post!** 1. THE Notebook! Well, it seems quite obvious that for an interactive notebook you need a notebook, but does the kind matter? In my opinion, YES! Definitely go for composition notebooks like the ones pictured below. Spiral bound notebooks just don't work as well and can easily lose pages throughout the year. Composition notebooks are tightly bound and can endure all of the use you'll be giving your notebook. 2. Scissors! You'll need a classroom set (or have students bring their own) to cut out your notebook inserts. 3. Glue Sticks! I prefer glue sticks a MILLION times over bottled glue to attach notebook inserts. There is a less likely chance of a goopy mess in the notebooks. While some have mentioned glue sticks not sticking as long, I've personally never had this problem and they seem to do the trick just fine. 4. Colored Pencils and Highlighters! While I don't spend an excessive amount of time in class adding color to notebooks, I do encourage students to do so when caught up on their class assignments or have extra time. I explain the use of color like this: "Wouldn't it be boring to look at a black and white textbook? Well, if your notebook is supposed to act as a 'textbook' in this class then it should be visually appealing as well". We all have students from time to time who just don't like "to color"...that's ok, BUT I do include "Appearance" on my rubric which I use to assess the notebooks (see below), so I encourage students to use color (whether with colored pencils or highlighting) in an effective way to make their notebooks more interesting and visually appealing. 5. Table of Contents! This 4 page document is stapled together and the the final sheet glued to the inside front cover of the notebooks. As we go throughout the year, students add the topic to the corresponding page number on their table of contents. This keeps everything nice and organized. Students can easily find and access topics just by a quick scan of the table of contents. 6. Rubric! This goes on the inside back cover of the notebook. I assess notebooks with the rubric once per grading period (for me that's once every 9 weeks). My rubric includes categories in Preparation, Use of Time, Organization, Appearance, and Completeness. My Rubric and Table of Contents are both available HERE in my TpT store. The rubric is even in editable format so that you can customize it for your classes. 7. Envelope! While I encourage students to attach inserts to their notebooks before adding in information, sometimes it just may not happen in class. They made need to finish something that they've already cut out but haven't attached at home. An envelope (either a letter sized OR a small manilla envelope) attached to the last page can store inserts and templates that haven't yet been glued. *Bonus* 8. Cover! A teacher recently emailed to ask if I would create a standard cover for all of her students to attach to the front of their notebooks. You'll find 3 different cover options and I've also included a few interactive notebook templates in the download which may be useful additions to your own INBs. I like to include listening activities in my Spanish classes as much as I can. It can be seriously challenging to find good listening activities for lower-level students, though. Textbooks only have so many (good) listening comprehension activities, and it can be tricky to find recordings of Spanish speakers who speak SLOWLY and CLEARLY. Here are five great websites that I've found and used in my Spanish 1 and 2 classes: 1. Quia There are listening activities for Level 1 HERE and for Level 2 HERE. Click "Start now>>" and you will see 10 multiple-choice listening activities. Each time you reload the page, it will give you new activities. (Good news if you want more options, bad news if you want to bookmark the page and go back in the future for particular recordings.) There are probably 30 listening activities that Quia randomly picks and loads on the webpage. Quia provides multiple-choice questions for each listening activity, so you can use those or make your own! I like to go through and listen to all the activities and record the ones I want to use in class. I used Audacity to record them, which is a free program you can download on your Mac or PC. It's super easy to use, and then you can save the recordings to your computer and use them year after year. 2. 123TeachMe There are listening activities for Novice Low HERE. There are 39 "groups", and each has two audio recordings. I just go through and listen to a bunch of them and record the ones I want to use in class. These recordings show up in the same order every time you load the page, so you can pull up the website in class and play the recording(s) you want. The website includes a question for each recording, so you can use that one or create your own! 3. University of Texas A reader sent me this link, so many thanks to Amanda B! The University of Texas at Austin has Spanish proficiency exercises, organized by Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced, and Superior. You can choose various topics for each level, and then there are several speakers from different Spanish-speaking countries, so your students can hear a variety of accents. You could easily pull this website up in class and play the recording you want, or record in advance whatever you want students to listen to. 4. Easy-Spanish.org A reader sent me the next 2 links, so many thanks to Robin P! This website has videos that will redirect you to youtube (so you could also just search "Super Easy Spanish" on youtube). There are 3 categories of free videos - Street Interviews, Grammar & Vocab Videos, and Videos for Absolute Beginners, and there are close to 300 videos total. I suggest you click the links (or just search "easy spanish" on youtube) and check out all the video options. Topics range from how to tell time in Spanish, to what people in Barcelona are reading, to imperfect subjunctive verbs. I have personally only worked in schools that block youtube, so if you also work in a school like that, then this won't be a good option for you unfortunately. 5. SpanishListening.org Thanks again to Robin P for letting me know about this website! This website has over 400 videos with native speakers from every Spanish-speaking country, so you can really let students hear a variety of different accents. The videos tell you if they are designed for Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced, so you can make sure you aren't previewing videos that your Spanish 1 or 2 students don't have any hope of understanding. Unfortunately, you do have to click on the videos to see what the person is talking about, so you might have to click around for a while before you find something you can use this week and not some time next year. I hope these ideas have helped you include more listening activities with native speakers in your lower-level classes! Where else do you get good listening activities? {Affiliate links used.} Animals and movement. What could be better for young children? I adore many of Eric Carle's books and have used them over the years in teaching Spanish. De la Cabeza a los Pies offers a wonderful opportunity to get kids moving and learning. As far as vocabulary goes there are animal names to learn and body parts. Each page of the book features an animal like a penguin, seal or camel doing a certain action. The text is simple and somewhat repetitive to help kids absorb the language better. Here is a look at some learning activities you can do with this book: Play Simon says in Spanish. Since there are a plethora of actions in the book you can use them to play this simple childhood game. Here is a list of possibilities... Girar la cabeza, doblar el cuello, alzar los hombros, saludar con los brazos, aplaudir con las manos, golpearse el pecho, arquear la espalda, menear las caderas, doblar las rodillas, dar patadas, pisar muy fuerte, mover el dedo del pie Another option with these actions is to call out the animal in Spanish and see if your students can do the action the animal did in the book. This requires a bit of memory so it might be a better activity after you have read the book a couple times to them. Along the same lines, you can call out a body part and see if they can point to it on themselves. Another activity I like to do along with this book is to use songs related to body parts. Diez Deditos is filled with wonderful songs and rhymes in Spanish for kids. It contains two to three songs that would be a great go-along for De la Cabeza a los Pies. Here is the song book for the CD which is incredibly helpful because not only do you get the words, but there are suggested actions for the songs. Check comprehension by saying a sentence outloud about one of the animals...for example, "El mono saluda con los brazos." or "El cocodrilo gira la cabeza." If the statement is correct, then the students say, “Claro que sí” (a repeated line from the book). If the statement isn't correct, they say, "Claro que no". If you are looking for graphics to go along with the book to make cards with, here is a link from Teach Beside Me. These are in English, but you could cut that part out or leave it. If you make cards, you can then have students select a card and say what the animal and action is in Spanish and then have them act it out. Here are more book activities in Spanish {click here}.
