Another fun library activity- Super hero training camp! It was raining this afternoon, so perfect timing. I think this whole idea would be fun for a birthday party as well. Getting himself in superhero mode! The kids arrived and got a list of tasks to do: First of all, Levi decorated his mask. It was made of fun foam and they used stickers and glitter glue. Then was the ROCK OF STRENGTH! He lifted that huge rock right above his head! In another feat of strength, he lifted 2 large weights up and down He did a maze made from tape on the floor, and then crawled through the tunnel Next he saved a "baby" by crossing a burning lava pit: (teen volunteers helped with this whole event, here they are making sure no one falls into lava) My little superman: And the most fun of all, was smashing through a brick wall! They had to rebuild it for every kid, sometimes more than once each, they loved it! And Levi will get a certificate for completing all of his tasks. What an exciting way to spend the afternoon! And of course, Levi needed a new shirt for the occasion. I had these sleeves cut out of yellow sitting in my sewing room, so I used them with the blue to make this slim fit lap-t style shirt, it fit over Levis big ol' head perfectly!

Our son, Christopher, turned 3 this month. He loves anything to do with construction ... construction trucks, signs, all tools, hard hats etc. ... and so it was easy to pick a theme for his party. I found a bouncy house in the shape of a digger a few months back and it was a go! The color theme was orange, yellow and black. It was so much fun to decorate the house and I must admit I went a little crazy with the caution tape! I found so many great ideas on Pinterest and I hope by sharing my party with you I will be paying it forward. Feel free to message me in the comments if you have any questions where I found things (just be sure to leave contact info). Outside Front of the House Decor: This was the front walkway and door that greeted our guests. The ladder and tools are my husband's that I just decorated with caution tape and tied balloons to (not pictured). The front door read "Caution 3 Year Old Ahead" and is a sign I made by hand from a poster board and sharpie I purchased at Walmart. Favors: When you entered our house there was a table full of hard hats and tool belts. The hard hats I purchased from Amazon.com and the tool belt are from Home Depot (.77 cents each). I used our chalkboard and wrote "Welcome Workers! Grab your uniform and report to Site Supervisor Christopher." As kids arrived we let them pick which color of hat they preferred and then tied on their tool belt and explained what was inside. Each tool belt contained a construction party blower (found on Amazon.com) and then Work Orders (see explanation later in this post). My husband made a logo for our son's pretend construction company. We printed and cut them out as circles and taped them on the front of the hats. They read "Christopher Lehmann Destruction Inc. Crew". ;) For the favor, each child received a small truck in a bag filed with whoopers (boulders) and recces pieces (pebbles) when they left. The trucks come in a 5 pack and can be bought at Target, Walmart or Amazon.com. The favor tag was found online and can be downloaded here: Link Inside Decor: Let me tell you, decorating your house with caution tape is way too much fun! This is our front room and I simply taped up caution tape and a bunch of signs (the one on the mirror came in a four pack that I purchased from Amazon.com). I then added a cone and dump truck that we already owned to the toy dresser and we were set. Also if you want to keep your party guests out of certain areas of your home caution tape and a "Danger Keep Out" sign works great and totally fits the theme! Port-a-Potty sign on the bathroom door! Port-a-potty sign found here: Link See I told you I went a little crazy ... I even decorated the bathroom! I love this "Workers Present" sign I found online and I put it above the mantel since all the presents would go in this room. The sign can be download here: Link. I made the 3 banner using the leftover poster board from the sign on the front door and the "Party Zone" sign. The 3s were cut out of black construction paper and glued on to the poster board. One of my favorite decorations went behind our food table. I simply taped caution tape and black and orange streamers in a repeating pattern at the top of our cupboards and then let them hang to the floor. It created a dramatic look for practically nothing! Food: The food table decorations included a "Dig In" banner that my husband designed and printed on card-stock (I had found a pack of oranges/yellows at Michael's for $5). My husband also designed the food tags which labeled all the food as their constriction counterparts. My son already owned the three construction trucks and all the tools on the table and they added a fun touch! I found the adorable idea of calling the cutlery "tools" on Pinterest. I already had a paint can from my daughter's painting party and just crumbled up some napkins on the bottom of the can to give height to the forks and knives. The plate and napkin holder I just happened upon in the Target $1 bins. For the food I kept it simple. I have made the mistake in the past of trying to make a bunch of fancy food from scratch for parties and have realized (1) kids don't eat fancy food (2) I will have no life/sleep the day/night before and morning of the party (3) it really is not worth the effort. So even though I still love going all out on party decor and details, I go pretty simple when it comes to food. Drinks were lemonade and apple juice labeled as gas and diesel (another Pinterest idea). And the "Refuel Here" sign we saw on Pinterest and then my husband just redesigned it. I bought some warning tape on Amazon.com for $4 and wrapped that on the water bottles to make them more festive. The dessert table was a lot of fun but again I kept it simple (everything was bought except for the dirt cups). We had a cake, build your own dirt cup station with four different toppings, and then mini cupcakes. The "Party Zone" sign was another sign I made out of poster board I found at Walmart. The "Build Your Own Dirt Cup" my husband designed. The dessert table was decorated with caution tape and again tools we had around the house. This is a Costco cake and it works perfectly for a construction party! I just added a few small trucks that I already had bought to give away as the favor and some smashed up Oreos as dirt and I was good to go! The candles I bought at Walmart. I loved the idea of doing a build your own dirt cup station. I made the dirt cups ahead of time with chocolate pudding and crushed up Oreos. Then for toppings we had wafer cookies (2x4s), whoppers (boulders), recces pieces (pebbles) and gummy worms (worms). The kids LOVED it and had more than enough sugar during this party! Games/Things for guests to do: The party was mainly in our backyard where we had a big bouncy digger, our play set/sandbox and tables set up. On each table in the middle I put a construction cone (two for $1 at the Dollar Store) with a dump truck printout that I had printed on white card stock and cut out (Link). I then ran balloons from a weight inside the cone out the top (not pictured). On each table I also placed coloring sheets (Link), crayons, and fake legos from the Target dollar bin. "Work Orders" were in each child's tool belt which they received as they arrived. The "Work Orders" listed the different locations where, now as construction workers, they had to do their "jobs". There was the Bounce Zone (the bounce house), the Wrecking Zone (the wrecking ball game), the Dig Zone (the sand box) and the Build Zone (inside the house in the front room where there were blocks and Duplo legos for the kids to build with). The older kids were really into this and checking off each box! I found the general template here (Link) and then my husband tweaked it a little bit to make it more personal. This is the Bounce Zone and as you can tell the birthday boy thought it was pretty cool! The second zone was the Wrecking Zone (another Pinterest idea)! I wrapped a bunch of boxes in brown and white packing paper and drew bricks on the brown and wood grain on the white. The kids could stack them as high as they wanted and then pull back the wrecking ball and knock them over. The wrecking ball was an old ball that we tied twine to and then covered in Duct Tape. We then attached it to the top of our swing set. It was a HUGE hit! The boxes. Our little construction worker! The third zone was the Dig Zone ... AKA the Sandbox! I just filled the sandbox with my son's construction trucks and shovels and then sprinkled some fake Legos (again Target $1 bin) so that the kids had something fun to dig up. The fourth and final zone was the Build Zone. In one room I put all our toys that kids could build with (i.e. connector blocks, wood blocks, Duplo Legos, train tracks etc.). Yiu-Shern's 6yo Lego Themed Party - 31 May 2015 We celebrated Shern's birthday last weekend, and we had a mini party at home. This time, we kept the party small with mostly relatives and just a few friends. And this year, Shern chose Lego-themed for his 6th birthday party! (Click to read about Shern's 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th Birthday Party) But the sad thing is my buddy Josie has temporarily closed down Favor-It-Shop due to personal reasons. So this means I have no one to help me do my party deco. :( So besides this digital invitation card that Josie managed to squeeze some time to help me with it (and I'm so grateful for it. Thanks Josie!), everything else I need I need to do it myself. And that is the reason why I need to keep the party small. So this year is back to all DIY, and I must say I'm pretty happy with the end results! :D But I must admit it is a bit nerve-wrecking for me as I did it quite last minute. All deco was done on the week of the party, and I stayed up late to do all the printing, cutting and such. As usual, my reference point for inspiration came from the ever reliable Pinterest. I got most of my inspirations from my Pinterest board. Firstly, I went to source some colourful papers to make the banner. Bought them from Popular bookstore. To me, this is the most important deco in any party as it will bring out the theme. I cut the A4 paper into 1/4 of the size to make the Lego blocks, and then punched out 6 circles for each block using my 3/4" circle punch to make the 'studs' on the Lego blocks. Then I adhered it using pop up stickers to make it look more obvious. After that I drew the letters 'YIU-SHERN IS 6' on a piece of white cardstock and cut them out, then adhered each letter to one coloured paper. And then I used wooden clothespins to clip each onto a long piece of jut. And the end results looks like this, which I super like! Next is the cutting of the Lego Man figurine head. I got the free printable online from this link for those of you who are interested. I just printed it on a piece of yellow cardstock and then cut it out and glued it on a satay stick. I also made washi flags of Lego colours and stick them on toothpicks. As for the eggs, I've got no sticker paper on hand. So I just printed these out which I found online and I used my circle puncher to punch them out then my sis helped to use tiny bit of glue to stick these on the red eggs. Next on is the most tedious part to me. My OCD sister helped me to sort out the lego blocks by colours. (This looks easy, but is not. Very tedious!) Then we arranged it into glass jars for decoration. And my sis also helped me to make a number '6' figure using Lego Blocks. Thanks Min. And lastly, using Lego moulds I bought online, I made colourful chocolate Lego Men and Lego Blocks. The colours came out a bit off. Not the Lego colour I wanted. My Lego Men looked decent, but the Lego Blocks failed. haha. Didn't have time to buy more chocolates and redo, so I ditched the failed Lego Blocks. I topped the Lego Men on the cupcakes ordered from Yours Truly. I also got some colourful paper cups which I saw on sale and just lined it on the table. And some colourful gummy sweets my kids got as gift from mum's friends just a few days before. This is how the dessert table looks like.....tadah...... Not bad huh for a last-minute DIY! At another corner, I also put out some mini deco as you entered the house. A few photos of the birthday boy with the letter S at the side, and some mini Lego cars that Shern recently built. This is the one-of-a-kind Lego birthday cake I decorated for Shern. Read all about it here. At 4pm, the VVIP and the VIP arrived. Haha. Before this, they were at mum's house while I got ready all the stuff in our house. A photo of the birthday boy in front of the dessert table. :) And the feast began. The main food was the curry chicken, fried bee hoon, fried rice and chai kuehs. Then the rest all are party food/desserts - golden egg rolls, red eggs, sandwiches, konyaku jellies, fruit tarts and cupcakes. And the guests mingled about in the house, eating and chatting. It was a relaxing party indeed. Meanwhile the kids were busy in the 'playroom' zooming cars and chugging trains. I don't have structured games in all my kids parties because the kids are of different ages. Then it was time for some group photoshoot. Firstly, my 2 handsome boys. :) Then a photo of just the 4 of us + Little Bun in my tummy. A photo of the kids with Min-yee and with Pho-pho and Ah-Kong. One from all at mum's house. Adding in Ah-Kong and Ah-Ma. Just with Ah-Kong and Ah-Ma. The Cheongs kau-kongs and kam-phos and yee-yee. With my ex-schoolmates With Rebecca and family, and Elly and his son, Jaden. Hubby's friend Adrian and family. Hubby's good friends Michael and family, and Alan & Bee Wooi. The cousins - Mah and family. Tucker asked back in June for a piñata for his birthday. But since we were in San Diego and I wanted to make one instead of buying one it got postponed until last week. I guess you could say it was an end of summer piñata I was a little surprised at how durable the paper mache was. I thought it was going to fall apart on the first hit, but it held its own and took a while to break apart. It was easy to do and Tucker loved that he got to help make it. Materials Needed: Newspaper Flour Water Balloon String Duct Tape (maybe) 1) Tear your paper into 1-2 inch strips. Both Tucker and Penelope loved this part. I just made a big pile and then made more when we ran out. We didn't come close to using the whole newspaper. 2) Make the paper mache by mixing 1 cup flour and 2 cups water. I ended up needing a little bit more then this but you will need to make more the next day so don't make more then this now. 3) Blow up your balloon. I got lucky because Tucker wanted a Spiderman head. All I needed was one balloon. If you are going for a more adventurous shape you may need to use more then one balloon, different shaped balloons, or even toilet paper rolls. 4) Dip the newspaper strips in the mixture and use your fingers to get excess goop off. 5) Place the strips on the balloon covering the entire thing. Once it dries do another coat. I tried to alternate the direction of the strips between coats. I did three coats at a time and then waited a long time to dry. then I needed to do another coat. It is best to let it dry between coats. 6) Between your second and third coat tie a string around the balloon. Once it is all dry ad another coat or two. Our string ended up being the first thing to break when hit so make sure you use sturdy string. 7) Decorate the balloon. A lot of people use folded tissue paper with fringe cut on the edges. I thought painting would look more like spiderman so we went ahead and painted it. 8) Cut a hole and fill it with candy. You are done. I thought that it would break around the string so we duct taped it as an extra precaution. I am not sure if it is necessary though. Tucker was the most into it out of my three kids. Scarlett didn't know what to do and Penelope started crying saying she wanted to be done. I don't think she liked the blindfold.
