Patchwork quilt blocks - 5" x 5" from the Fat Quarter Shop
Happy Needle and Thread Thursday, friends! This week, my wild thing is on Spring Break, and so he and I decided to take a trip down to Baton Rouge to visit my family for a few days. We left the hubs and the dog at home, so the trip was a little different from the usual, but it was a really fun way to kick off Spring Break. I finished up this quilt before we left, but since we just got back yesterday afternoon, I'm just getting around to sharing! From the very beginning, the bright improv scraps paired with the black and white sketch reminded me of distorted screen images when a TV signal is messed up; and I think the oversized chevron layout just adds to that effect, so I decided to name this quilt Distortion. I really had a tough time deciding on the backing for this one though. Sometimes, when a quilt has so many colors, the choices are just too many. I finally settled on this large floral print, and I love that it picks up the reds and yellows in the quilt. It is a Koko Lee print that I found on the designer aisle at my JoAnn, and it is really soft. I decided on a Kona Chartreuse binding for this quilt, and I think the color is just funky enough to match the feel of all of those improv bits. This quilt was FUN from start to finish, and I can't wait to start teaching this class. In fact, I'm going to be teaching it in June at my favorite quilt shop in Baton Rouge, Red Stick Quilt Shop. With a great variety in scraps, background fabric, and layout, I can't wait to see all of the lovely variations of this one! I also realized that I never shared this little mini with you here. I snapped a quick Instagram photo, but I wanted to be sure that my blog friends get to see it as well. My guild president had the fantastic idea to organize a Thoroughly Modern Mini Swap with all of the MQG chapters in Tennessee (we have four- Memphis Area, Chattanooga, Knoxville, and Music City/Nashville). It is such a fun way to connect across our state! I decided to dive into my aqua scraps, and make a structured improv argyle mini for my partner. The finished mini is 18 inches square. I can't wait to mail it to her! We have one last piece of business to attend to before we link up, and that is to choose the winner of the fun fat quarter bundle from Fat Quarter Shop! Well, hello! Today I will share a simple (and fun) little tutorial on how to make a patchwork dish towel. The strip of patchwork is a perfect opportunity to customize for any holiday....or make one out of your favorite color scheme, as I did here. This is a great way to use up those mini charm packs that you may collect, but aren't quite certain what to do with. Scraps from the scrap bins are a great option, too. Always! What you will need: one flour sack dish towel (mine is about 30" square) 15 2.5" squares (number of squares may vary depending on the width of your dishtowel) white thread working sewing machine Assembly: All seam allowances are 1/4" unless otherwise noted. Sew the 2.5" squares end to end to make a patchwork strip. Press seams to the side. Make sure that the strip is at least 1/2" longer than the width of your towel. Align the patchwork with the edge of the towel. Pin in place. Find the starting point for your seam. Start 1/4" seam from the top of the towel and 1/4" in from the right hand side. You may want to mark this point with a pencil or water soluble pen. (See photo for starting point.) Sew along the right side of the patchwork. Stop sewing 1/4" from the bottom edge of the towel. Press the patchwork strip away from the edge of the towel. Trim ends of patchwork so they extend about 1/4" on each end. (My dish towel is a little wonky, so I'm just following the edges as they are.) Fold the patchwork down and finger press the raw edges up about 1/4". Press seam with a hot iron. Fold the patchwork strip back up. Tuck in all raw edges and pin in place. Use a scant seam allowance to top stitch around the entire patchwork strip. I didn't sew on each seam within the patchwork strip, but you could if you wanted to! Back stitch a few stitches at the beginning/end of your seam. The back looks nice and tidy because I used white thread.... and the front is pretty cute, too! Here's a close up of the top stitching. I would recommend making a bunch....some to keep and some for gifts! I can't guarantee that this will make doing dishes more fun, but it should make your kitchen a bit more cheery. :) I hope you have fun with this tutorial! Oh, and this is scrap project #113. Yay!! PONTO AJOUR OU BAINHA A OURO Em video para ajudar na execução: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6g_MrXOFHeo Nesta minha demonstração, usei tecido de sacaria para pintura, da Estilotex. O bordado em ponto ajour, consiste em retirar alguns fios da trama do tecido e bordar neste desfiado, deixando um espaço vazado. Originariamente o bordado deve ser feito com o mesmo fio que você retira, quando desfia o pano, porém quando esse fio não é resistente, podemos substituí-lo por uma linha de algodão de retróz, da mesma cor do tecido. Antigamente este ponto era usado em tecidos de linho, cambraia de linho, cânhamo fino, que são tecidos com tramas faceis de desfiar. Hoje a ESTILOTEX disponibiliza no mercado, alguns desses tecidos. O AJOUR pode ser simples, duplo, ou trançado. Se fizermos esse bordado em qualquer parte interna do nosso trabalho ( toalha de mesa, toalha de bandeja, pano de prato, etc... ) para criar um detalhe, esse ponto leva o nome de AJOUR. Se usarmos esse mesmo ponto na barra do trabalho ( para se fazer um acabamento mais fino) ele passará a se chamar BAINHA A OURO. Para quem tem dificuldade ou não sabe como fazer o desfiado aí está meu tutorial http://cristinacrepaldi.blogspot.com.br/2014/03/como-desfiar-o-tecido-para-bordar-o.html 1 - Como estou fazendo uma toalha e quero a BAINHA A OURO na volta toda, comecei puxando o fio com cuidado, sem franzir o pano. Neste caso retirei apenas 3 fios. Para que minha barra, no final do trabalho fique com 1,5cm, deixei uma margem de 4cm. Fica a seu critério fazer uma barra maior ou menor. As barras mais largas ficam ótimas em toalhas de banquete, no linho. Note que desfiei somente até o ponto onde o trabalho faz o ângulo de 90º, ou seja, até onde inicia o desfiado da outra margem. 2 - Retire nos 4 cantos um quadrado de 1,5 cm para quando você fizer o acabamento em canto mitrado. A referência desse corte é sempre a metade da medida da barra até o desfiado, menos 0,5 cm. Se desfiarmos uma barra com 8 cm, cortaremos um quadrado de 3,5 cm fora. Pelo lado do avesso, faça uma dobra de mais ou menos 1cm. Depois, dobre novamente até o começo do defiado e alfinete. 3 - Nos cantos, proceda como na sequência das fotos, para que fique canto mitrado. Alfinete. Começando o ponto. Demonstrarei o pap em cor contrastante, para ter uma visão melhor de sua execução, mas não se esqueça, o AJOUR para ficar elegante, têm-se que trabalhar na mesma cor da trama do tecido escolhido. 1 - Deixe o nó por dentro da barra dobrada para não ser visto. Pegue com a agulha 1 ou 2 fios dessa barra. 2 - Prenda a linha com o polegar. Separe 4 fios desfiados. Para deixar maior o ponto vazado, você deve neste momento pegar mais fios. 3 - Passe a linha e prenda-a com o polegar. Na sequência pegue 1 fio do tecido de baixo e 1 ou 2 fios da barra dobrada. 4 - Repita sucessivamente até finalizar o trabalho. 5 - Trabalhamos o tempo todo pelo avesso. Na foto abaixo vemos como fica a frente do trabalho finalizado. 6 - Quando chegamos no canto mitrado, ao finalizar o ultimo ponto, costuramos a parte mitrada com ponto invisível. Depois passa-se o fio internamente, vire o trabalho e dê continuidade no próximo lado da barra. Assim fica o avesso do trabalho. Aqui já está com linha no tom do tecido. 7 - Frente da BAINHA A OURO. Dica de como fazer bom acabamento se bordar o ajour no centro do trabalho. Para fazer um bom arremate num bordado o segredo é separar os nós do inicio e final do trabalho. Para iniciar o ajour, procure deixar uma sobra de linha de uns 10 a 15 cm. Dê apenas uma laçada para prender a linha no início e então borde toda a volta ( para facilitar, prenda a linha no tecido com o polegar e então inicie o bordado ). Quando finalizar, passe a agulha voltando uns 2 ou 3 pontos e então arremate com nós bem feitos. O mesmo fará com aquela linha que deixou a mais. Coloque-a na agulha, avance uns 2 ou 3 pontos e arremate com nós bem feitos. Dessa maneira os nós ficarão distantes e não ficarão tão grosseiros. Jogo americano feito presente de casamento para nora de uma amiga. Toalha de bandeja Não fica um trabalho com acabamento requintado? Estou partilhando um pouco do que de melhor minha querida mãe passou para mim, quando ainda era muito nova. Não podemos deixar se perder no tempo, uma delicadeza dessas. Я попросту устала от красного цвета - это совсем не мой цвет, хотя я очень люблю смотреть на красные традиционные вышивки. Красный - безусловный король в мире сэмплеров, где-то, помнится, я читала, что наличие красного цвета в работе говорило о сравнительном достатке семьи, так как эти нитки не были широко доступны. In 2008 I started this beautiful sampler. I stitched almost half of it and...stopped. I simply got tired of the red colour. Red is not my favorite, but I adore the traditional red (rouge) samplers, this colour is definitely a "czar" of all colours. В 2008-ом году у меня не было возможности купить оригинальный шелк, и после раздумий и советов девочек я начала шить нитками ДМС двух цветов: ярко-красный 321, и только темная честь меланжа 115. Да, я нещадно отрезала светлую часть от нити 115-го цвета. Рeзультат вы видите, мне он очень нравится. Еще одно достоинство ДМС в отличие от шелка - он не линяет. Вышивка постирана и все осталось как есть, без малейшего пятнышка. Details: Sampler Cove design, appr. 45x45cm, Cream 40ct linen, threads - not according to the key. I couldn't afford the silk in 2008, so I used two colours of DMC - the bright 321, and darker 115 (but only the dark part of this melange floss). То есть тут не только крестик, хотя он, конечно, в основе. The design is a collection of the various ribbons. In the center - a beautiful square ornament with Assisi embroidery around it, and further - satin stitch embroidery. Although the cross stitch is the base of the design. Ну и традиционно - детали ленточек :-) Traditionally, some macro photos of the ribbons :-) Сэмплер большой, очень большой. На багет надо реально копить :-).
