Excerpted from The Anniversary Sampler Quilt: 40 Traditional Blocks, 7 Keepsake Settings by Donna Lynn Thomas. Forty Years of Love, designed, pieced, and appliquéd by Donna Lynn Thomas, machine quilted by Denise Mariano, 92˝ × 92˝. Clay’s Choice Foreword 40 years ago I fell in love—twice. I met the love of my life and made my first quilt (for him). What wonderful years both of those passions have brought. Gentle Breeze Certain life events are the cause for celebration and remembrance. We feel the need to mark these passages of time with something concrete, something of special significance, something full of meaning and stories. What else is a quilter to do but make a quilt? Posy Basket We often think of anniversaries in terms of weddings, but they are so much more. They’re yearly commemorations of a life event or a milestone. Anything important is worthy of an anniversary remembrance. We can find great joy in remembering that first kiss, a life-altering decision, a birth, a graduation, an adventure, and yes—even that first quilt! Yankee Puzzle Just as the aroma of baking bread or the melody of a favorite song can transport us to a different time, so too can quilt blocks. We quilters all have our favorites that we find ourselves making over and over again and still others that are tied to important events and special memories. Paddlestar I chose my favorite 40 quilt blocks . . .Each block told a story. Each print, whether silky or coarse, from riotous scarlet to quieter burgundy and lovely pink, sent me musing upon past days. Recalling some of these stories had me in tears, while others made me laugh all over again. What treasures these memories are. . . Cupid’s Arrow Stories and memories of many years, whether joyful, sad, funny, or poignant, are held in each of these blocks. I’ll bet some spark memories for you, too. Come join me as I celebrate 40 years of quilting and love . . . What will you commemorate in a quilt of your own? My Three Vets Follow my blog with Bloglovin
UPDATE 04/24/2011: I wanted to finish this project so that it would be practical, so I have used a 6" by 6" Sudberry House trivet for it. Under the canvas I have added a piece of fabric of a color similar to the canvas itself because of all the unstitched areas. Again, I am afraid that the photo is not too good because of the glass reflection. =================================== (I am planning to go out shopping and see what I can find that would look great in the middle of this design) (The green leaves in the center came with the kit) (This is the photo that came with Toni Gerdes project) (3rd photo) Project: 4-Way Bargello Orchid Designer: Toni Gerdes Type of needlework: Bargello Photos: 6 Toni's website: http://www.tonigerdes.com/ ANG CyberPointers website: http://www.cyberpointers.org/ ANG website: http://www.needlepoint.org/index.php Comments: WORK IN PROGRESS This is an absolutely lovely design that as member of ANG CyberPointers we received for free during our bimonthly meeting. Toni was there in Cyberspace to help us along whenever we had questions and she is still there even if the meeting is now over to answer our questions. Sometimes I wonder what we, stitchers, used to do before we started going online. We all used to stitch pretty much by ourselves without much communication with the other stitchers. Things sure have changed a lot since then and in this case for the better. I started this project this past Thursday (November 4th) and I have already half of it completed. I just love these colors. I am using one of Toni's colorways, so can't get any credit for how well this is turning out to be. This is the Lavender/Green colorway. This project can be done in 3 different sizes, mine will be the smallest size, which is 6" by 6". I thought that was a nice size as I don't always feel like ending up with big projects. Smaller also means that it takes less time to have a completed project. In this project, there is one overdyed floss and all the rest of the threads are just Anchor floss of two different color families in different shades and 4 little plastic green leaves that will go in the middle where the dark lavender is located. Now my big question is do I stop stitching after what has been done on the 5th photo which is the first photo above or do I continue stitching in order to do exactly as Toni Gerdes has done on her project (third photo above)? The answer to that question is "I am not sure". If you have some opinions one way or another, I would love to hear from you. Please send me a little message at my email address here: [email protected] . (This is the 2nd photo showing the stitched center) (This is the first photo taken of this project. I completed a pomegranate motif as I wanted to see the progression of colors right away)

Hi friends! I have finished my video on how to do the herringbone weave. This video will give you a good idea of how your weft flows over and under the warp threads to create the pattern. I love how these draft patterns look, but I always have to get my mind in the right place

Caryl Bryer Fallert opened her studio to the public during the show. I love her work and it was incredibly neat to see her work space. It also made me think about quilting in a new way. The show in general exploded my thinking about quilting and fiberart. It, of course, gave me new ideas for quilts. Looking at quilts and anything to do with fabric and fiber always starts my mind racing ahead with things to try and ways to solve problems. But being immersed in all things quilty encouraged me to take quilting and creativity in general more seriously. Fallert creates, teaches and lives her commitment to her art and she is a three-time prize winner but it was great to see lots of other folks, with maybe less exalted abilities also mange to make their way in the creative world.
