i have no new blocks to share just yet, so i am sharing a copy of megan's beautiful work as she assembles section 1 of the gypsy wife quilt. by the way, she has written a brilliant tutorial on assembling the block sections with partial seams. it's got me thinking they aren't so bad after all! now, just because i finished it and also because there are busy friends out there who are working ahead of the quilt along schedule, i'm sharing the spreadsheet i made for the blocks, broken down by section and month of the quilt along. there is no pressure to work ahead! everyone should feel like they can work at their own pace, whatever that is. click images to enlarge again, why do they come out different sizes?! you can download a pdf copy of the block chart here. or, if you are viewing it on your cell phone, you can click on the chart to enlarge the image, and then take a screen shot, which you can then zoom in on. it might be handier for some people to have a copy on their phone. if you are confused about the "block id" column, that was for personal use. when i was working my way thru the book the first time around, i found it helpful to give each block an id tag, which i marked in the instructions and in the assembly charts for cross-referencing purposes. you can just ignore it. i've seen several section 1's already assembled on instagram at the hashtag #GypsyWifeQuiltSection1 (and even some section 2's!) it's pretty exciting to see so many of them coming together. now that my sewing room renovations are complete, as of yesterday, i can assembly my own section 1 this weekend. we can do this, friends! as always, you can follow along with everyone over on instagram at #GypsyWifeQuiltAlong2016.

It’s often challenging to sew together differently sized blocks. Add to that the Gypsy Wife’s pieced, striped background and very minimal instruction booklet and you can expect the process might get rocky. Here are some tips to help you on your way.

Today I am sharing a houndstooth quilt pattern with an optional embroidered Nebraska Huskers logo. This pattern is easy to incorporate into any decor.
OK... After playing quilting and sewing some, you end up with a bunch of scraps. DON'T THROW THEM AWAY!!! With a roll of adding machine tape, you can go from this: to this: What a difference! And just think that all those little pieces of awesomeness could be in the trash by now... Such a sad thought after seeing this beautiful piece of modern quilting in action! I came up with this idea after watching Peggy Martin's Craftsy class, Quick Strip Paper Piecing. You just need a roll of adding machine paper, which will be the foundation for the strip. The difference with the blocks I'm showing in this block is that the scraps I have are way smaller and the finished effect is more scrappy. Here is how you do it. Cut a length of adding machine paper a tad longer than the length you want your finished piece to be. Start by placing one scrap with the right side facing up, close to the end of the paper strip. Feel free to pin it or glue this first piece, just to keep it in place. Right on top of it, on the edge, right side facing down, put a second scrap of fabric. Sew a 1/4 inch seam. Remember to shorten your stitch length - this will be extremely useful when the time comes to separate the fabric from the paper. Also, paper-piecing really gets your needle dull, so either use an old needle or be prepared to dull the one you are using at the moment. Open the fabric on top. If you use larger pieces of fabric, feel free to press them open. In this case, I was working with very little pieces, so I did not press until after I finished the strip. Take another piece of fabric and sew it on top of the others, just like you did with the previous scrap. Keep adding scraps of fabric. Every once in a while you'll end up with a funky line that is not straight, like the one in the next picture. Just work your way with it and try to get back into a straight line by adding more scraps. Once you finished covering the strip of paper, you'll end with something that looks like this: At this point, you can press the strip so that you set the seams. Remember to press in the same direction you sewed the scraps. You can spray the strips with some starch, but be careful so that the paper doesn't get wet; if it does, it will warp and your strip will no longer be straight, and you won't be able to use the paper as a cutting guide. Now you can go ahead and trim the excess fabric; use the paper as a guide. Like this, you will always end up with a straight, accurate strip of pieced fabric scraps. The next step is comparable to that time when you were a kid, poured white glue on your hand, waited for it to dry and then peeled it off!!! Soooo satisfying :) What you need to do is just peel the paper off. Now, be careful not to pull too tight or you can distort the stitches and the strip won't be straight. This is also why you should reduce your stitch length; this makes pulling the paper off way easier and don't distort the fabric. You will end with something that looks like this: So, from a bag of scraps to pieced strips, ready to go into a fabulous quilt block! In order to make the pods, I cut the long strips and sewed them together to form 5" by 5" squares. I then framed the squares to bring a little structure to the blocks. I decided to use a solid fabric in a neutral color so that the eyes have a chance to "rest" and create a sense of structure in the composition. You can even end up with a border for a quilt! And just think that these little pieces of wonderfulness may have had a very different ending... Enjoy!

For this tutorial I am going to show you how to sew 60-degree triangles together into pairs, then rows & then put the rows together. 3 1/2" triangles are shown here. The concepts are the same for other size triangles cut from the Hex N More, Sidekick and Super Sidekick rulers. The triangles are all arranged with the blunt point up or down. Take the 2nd triangle and place it on top of the first, right sides together. Alignment is key. Make sure they are exactly on top of each other before sewing them together with a 1/4" seam. Press seams open. Here is the sewn pair back together with the other triangles. After sewing the 1/4" seam, check to measure that it is accurate. I know this can feel tedious, but accuracy matters. Any mistake in seam allowances at this point will just compound as you continue with your project. If the seam is off, make adjustments with your machine or where you place the fabric to get it accurate. It is best to stop and correct any seam allowance issues now. Repeat the steps with other pairs as shown. If your row has an odd number of triangles, just leave the last one as a single. Next we will sew two sets together. Flip the right set up and over on top of the left set as shown. Align the point of the 3rd triangle with the dog ear created from sewing the first set together. Align the top right corner point of the 2nd triangle with the dog ear created from sewing the second set together. Sew a 1/4" seam. Press the seams open. Again check to measure that it is accurate. Here are the sewn 4 triangles back together with the other triangles & sets. Finish sewing together all of the sets and single triangles in each row. Confirm that the points of each triangle are 1/4" in from the edge of the seam. This way they will be exactly where you want them to be once you start sewing rows together. Place the two rows right sides together. Put a pin in at the exact point where the triangles meet. Carefully push the pin through to the second piece where the triangles meet. Your piece should look like this. Now put two pins in the piece as you would normally pin, one on either side of this straight pin. Be careful to make sure that you keep this pin perpendicular to the seam when adding the other two pins. Once those pins have been added you can remove this pin. Repeat at the other intersection of triangle points. Sew the two rows together with a quarter inch seam. Press open. Now you have 6 triangles points that meet up perfectly! Here's the back of my completed piece so that you can see where all of the seams are etc. My finished piece measures 6 1/2" tall x 11" wide at the middle. Practice and accuracy are my secrets to making points match when sewing triangles and other 60-degree shapes. The Houndstooth is a classic and fantastic example of one simple block in repeat to create an interesting design. On it’s own, it looks a little like Batman! In the winter of 2016 Lynne Tyler made three quilts using scraps and the Tri-Recs template set. This tutorial explains the process from start to finish, and shows photos of the finished quilts, Fruit Loops, Treasure Trove and Snow Day. Use your scraps to build large "slabs" or "made fabric", then cut the blocks from this "made fabric." The tutorial shows step by step instructions to make the slabs, cut the blocks and the side triangles, and assemble the blocks. The basic block can be arranged into different designs, as illustrated in this tutorial. It shows many possibilities as well as providing suggestions for creating your own versions. 51 pages full of color photographs. You’ll need the Tri-Recs Ruler set, which you should purchase separately.
