Yee-haw! This is my latest What's Wrong? to be published by those wonderful folks at Highlights for Children! It can be seen on the back cover of the September issue which should be available now. This one really had me missing the Southwest. My alter ego, Ranger Kent, can be seen teaching some kids how to lasso, and my wife's alter ego, Cowgirl Pearl, is riding a reindeer. As previously posted, the famous racehorse, Secretariat, is on the lower right. The first sketch is posted below. You can see some of the major changes that needed to done to complete this one. Most notably the switching of Pearl and the Ostrich which really did improve the composition. The funniest correction I thought was that the sunbathing roadrunner because he looked like he was dead. I couldn't make myself get rid of him entirely so I moved him next to the birds listening to the boom box in the final art. Click here if you'd like to get your kids a subscription to Highlights for Children. Don't subject them to only seeing Highlights when they are sick or about to get their teeth drilled. That's not very nice, is it? Be a good parent.

Arts and Crafts styling puts a fitting face on this hillside home. As it snuggles up to the terrain, the homes natural wood and stone effortlessly blend in with natures elements. Like an asymmetrical tower of blocks, the exterior form even mimics the irregular shape and random terrain of a bluff, effecting a harmonious link to the landscape. The interior is divided among three levels. The main floor houses the living spaces and a guest suite. The foyer and dining room join forces at the front of the home and display both warmth and elegance. The dining room is accompanied by a built-in hutch and a butlers pantry. Beyond is the great-room, which features a fireplace, built-ins, and French doors that open to a pergola-covered patio. A long, lean island defines the traffic patterns of the kitchen. The cooking enthusiast will relish the six-burner stove and double ovens. A banquette in the breakfast nook saves on floor space and provides for more seating than freestanding furniture. An open-air porch with a fireplace, and a carport with a driveway that slopes to the front, are at the back of the home. Where privacy and peace are desired, the home provides an office and a guest suite, accessed from a hallway off the great-room. The office has a pair of closets for storing reference materials and files. The guest suite includes a private bath, a walk-in closet, and French doors that lead to a front deck. The upper level contains two secondary bedrooms that share a bath, and the master suite. A large shower, private deck, dual lavs, a spa tub, and a large dressing closet with bays for two adorn the suite. Also conveniently located on the same level are the laundry room, which is steps from bedroom hampers, and a study, which gives older children a quiet place to work on the computer or do homework. The lower level contains the three-car garage and an unfinished storage room.
I baked mine in a 10 1/2-inch (26/27cm) solid tart pan. It can also be baked in a stoneware quiche dish or on a baking sheet. If using a tart pan with a removable bottom, you may want to bake it on a parchment - or foil-lined baking sheet, to catch any drips. (Mine didn't drip, but you never know...) Either fromage frais or whole milk ricotta can be used. One thing to remember is that when this tart is hot from the oven, it'll be tricky to get perfect slices out of it. Don't let that deter you if you want to serve it soon after taking it out of the oven, when the cheese is oozing and melty. Remember, it's your guest's job to enjoy themselves, not to be food critics : ) That said, it's great served just slightly warm or at room temperature, and fine reheated the next day as well.

A couple of weekends ago I disappeared. I dropped off the grid and escaped to the countryside. Back to a spot I’d fallen in love with a couple of Autumns ago, back to Wriggly Tin. A secret little clearing in the middle of a wood, dotted with a handful of Tins, or shepherd huts to […]

After I discovered this recipe, it became a mainstay for me. I make the dough ahead of time when company is coming, and I try to keep some in the refrigerator to bake for our ranch hands. Leftover mashed potatoes are almost sure to go into these rolls. —Jeanette McKinney, Belleview, Missouri
