As the cooler Autumn weather approaches, I've been drooling over beautiful babywearing coats that, unfortunately, don't quite fit my budget....
Pin It Today I'm going to show you how to make an extremely versatile baby accessory. (And it just happens to a really cute grown-up accessory to boot.) Soon after J was born (at the end of June) we started taking walks together using our Moby wrap. At first those walks were just for me, to get the baby weight off, but soon I realized J actually loved to be outdoors. I could just see it in her eyes, she was in her element. So in the Fall, when it started to get chilly, we both still wanted to get out and enjoy the world. It was kind of a production --- I would layer her in warm pants and a jacket, get us into the Moby wrap, and then put a sweater over me. And when the walk was done, we had to get all those layers off. Then one day I saw a lady wearing one of these awesome baby wearing ponchos and I was ecstatic! I basically ran, right there and then, to the fabric store to buy some fleece and make my own! It was revolutionary! You can wear it so many ways. It works with any size baby. It can be worn over any baby carrier I've ever seen. And any way you wear it, it works great! You can wear it with a new baby. (P.S. Thats not J, that's "Gerby" the doll. ) You can wear it with a bigger baby. This is J. :) Here's how you can put it on with your little one on your back: Just pull it around you and Cutie, tie it behind your back, and now you are both warm. :) AND if thats not enough coolness, you can also use it as a tie-on baby blanket in your stroller. Now the blanket can't be can't kicked off, or droop down into the wheels. (Someone's lovin her walk!) I even like mine so much that I wear it all on my own at times. Have I lured you in? Do you want your own yet? Well, Let me show you how to make one. Its really simple and you don't even have to sew if you don't want to. All it is, is a piece of fleece fabric cut into this shape. I mean, come one --- sooo simple! Now I will walk you through the process: Be warned, I'm a fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants kind of project do-er, so be prepared, I don't do exact instructions, just a guide. You start with a piece of fleece that is around 2 yards long. (You may be able do less, I'm gonna talk you through that as we go.) Fold it in half, the long way (like a hot dog bun) And You basically make two {or three} cuts. You just cut out the center piece, making the space that fits around your neck. To figure out the neck shape, I took a tee-shirt of mine, and laid it where I wanted the collar. I used its neck to create the line I would cut on the fleece. Then I just took my tape measure and stretched it from there to the outer corner, just to help me keep my line straight as I cut the rest. So now you've cut out the center piece. Try on your poncho. If you are short like me, you may want to take a bit off the side (that long skinny piece on the left) so the poncho doesn't come down quite as far on your arms. So now you are left with this: Here is what my poncho measures: I'm 5' 3" so if you are taller than that, you may want to make these measurements that I'm showing you larger, so the poncho will cover more of you. You also want to make sure you leave the tails long enough that you can easily tie them around your waist (accounting for a bit of extra length when wearing larger babies.) If you start long, you can always trim it to make it shorter. Thats really all I did. I started with 2 yards, and cut out the center, and then just kept trimming till it fit the way I liked. And if you don't want to sew you are done! Voila! This is what your edges will look like. I don't think the raw, un-sewn edge looks bad. If you have a serger sewing machine (or someone you know does) you can finish the edge will a rolled hem, to give it an officially finished look. Like this. Or if you crochet, you can do what I did to mine and give it a fancy edge. Like this. ________________________________________________________ If this is your cup of tea, and how you want to finish yours with crochet, you will need something sharp to punch holes into the fleece to insert your crochet needle into. (I used whatever I had laying around, which happened to be a knitting tool for cable knits, with a pointy enough end. But you can get creative and use whatever.) I just eyeballed the distance between the holes. And to do the stitch: Yarn over and pull the loop through your poked hole. Yarn over and pull that loop through the other two on your needle. Now do that twice more in the same hole. Chain once, and start a new hole about 1/4" from your first hole. Keep doing this. When you hit a corner make your hole right in the "armpit" of the corner. Do your crochet in the hole bit. Then chain twice to go around the corner, and do another trio of crochets in the same corner hole. ________________________________________________________ But you can finish yours anyway your heart desires. You can google up tons of ideas. (Search for stuff like "how to finish fleece blankets" "How to crochet edge of fleece baby blanket" ect.) So get your creative thoughts pumpin, go buy the fabric of your dreams, (I picked mine because it reminded me of a coat that was my grandma's I found at our cottage. This coat, about 20 years old, a present from my grandmother (but not hers, I don't want to overdo it here ;) ) has saved me in the wintermonths of my two pregnancies: Baggy and cosy. Non-pregnant, however, 'baggy' is not exactly what you would want for your coat, hanging shouldercaps (here just above the elbow) make it even more baggy and cumbersome to lift your arms. On the other hand I have always wanted a babywearing coat for cold winter days. Something that can be worn with but also without baby on the back. So here I went, courageously cutting my way through the coat. First I adapted the shoulders,cutting away lots of material, which in the end was missing lengthwise at the sleeves. The lining had to be adjusted and mended, which was at least as cumbersome as adapting the outer shell of the coat. I used checkered cooked wool for the inserted piece and also for the cuffs: There are two horizontal zippers from each side to the middle and one vertical. the other vertical zipper of the same brand and length is sewn between two layers of cooked wool of the insert piece. I just found out that it also fits to my fleece jacket, so if ever I want to wear my little one belly to belly and I need a jacket, I have this option, too! The insert piece is somewhat egg-shaped. I applied elastic cords horizontally and around the head-support bit (it's not really meant to be supportive for a sleeping baby, but at least it is a good protection against the wind. Horizontally I added a flap to have some more protection against cold and wind while wearing and to cover the horizontal zippers when I wear the coat without my baby and without the insert. Actually I had wanted to pimp the coat a bit more with this berry coloured cooked wool - lovely material! - but then other projects came up... But I guess this is the reason, why I didn't post this earlier ;) I still need to take some pics of the coat without the insert, hopefully soon...

The Parenthood Poncho is a game changer! This one garment can take you through pregnancy, babywearing, breastfeeding, and beyond. It is truly one size fits all and has been tested up to 4X. The unique shoulder gussets give a nice curve to the poncho, without adding width to the neckline. Not just for the mamas! You can use materials everyone in your family will enjoy. Please note this needs to be used with a babywearing device - it is not a baby carrier! Pattern options: The three versions included all use the same pattern pieces, to keep it simple. Option 1 has a single snap panel for front or back babywearing. Option 2 has two snap panels for tandem babywearing. Option 3 has no snap panel, for those who aren't wearing babies. Choose from a regular neckline, or turtleneck cowl. Optional kangaroo pocket piece included, which can be sewn to either the inside or outer layer. All versions of this poncho are reversible. Difficulty: This pattern has 8 panels that are large. It can be a challenging sew for beginners. We've included a video for the hardest step which is attaching the turtleneck. Fabric: Most any fabric with nice drape will work - anything from sweater knits to heavy coating. Make sure both layers have the same amount of stretch, if using knits. Yardage: 2.75 to 4 yards each of outer and lining fabrics. Special supplies needed: Snaps, buttons, or parka zippers for the babywearing options. Maternity friendly: Yes, no modifications needed. Nursing friendly: Yes, no modifications needed. Size range: One size poncho with three lengths. The short length is 24" and hits the hip. Mid length is 30" and hits below the crotch. Long length is 37" and hits the knee. Fit: Fits to the neck, then flares out. Pockets: Optional kangaroo pocket piece included, which can be sewn to either the inside or outer layer. Time to complete: About an hour to cut, and an hour to sew.

This is a modified version of leethal’s skoodlet, to use when I’m carrying my baby in our Sleepywrap sling. It has a hood for him, and instead of the scarflet sections, it has a long back panel that buttons onto my coat on either side. This way, I’m able to button my coat around him, and we both stay warm! I also added a pocket so I’d be able to keep my hands cozy. I’m really happy with how it turned out. The only thing I don’t like is that the hood ended up a little too big. I re-knit it a couple of times, worrying that it would be too small (I wanted it big enough to fit over a hat), and I think I went a little overboard. But better too big than too small. I followed the skoodlet pattern to make the hood, with a few changes to the pattern: I used value a = 7.4x (24 st) instead of 8x (my gauge was 3.25 st/in, so this translated into 24 st) I stopped knitting the section that goes over the top of the head when it was 12 inches long I stopped knitting the joined hood section when it was 8.5 inches flattened For value “c,” I used 2.5x I stopped following the pattern when it got to the scarflet sections After the hood portion was done, I worked in stockinette stitch (with 7-stitch-wide garter stitch edging) until the panel was 13” long, adding three 3-stitch buttonholes to match up with my coat buttons. Because Arlo is wider at the bottom than at the top, I increased the width of the panel slightly as I worked--it is approx. 15” wide at the top buttonhole and approx. 17” wide at the bottom buttonhole. To do this, I added 2 st (one on each side, right next to the garter edging) every sixth row, more or less. For the kangaroo pocket, I cast on 24 st, knit in garter stitch for 1”, knit in stockinette stitch for 9”, and then knit another 1” of garter stitch. When it was done, I sewed it onto the front of the panel. It’s a little crooked, but it gets the job done :)

Inmiddels ben ik al weer 2,5 maand de trotse mama van 3 heerlijke jongens. De jongste vind het heerlijk om in een draagdoek gedragen te worden. Alleen nu is het vinden van een passende jas daaroverheen best lastig. Ik besloot een draagponcho te maken. Lekker makkelijk en lekker snel. En met deze stap voor stap blog kan jij hem straks ook maken! Voor de poncho op de foto hier boven heb ik een fleecekleedje van de Zeeman gebruikt, kosten 2,99. Voor de poncho in de how to heb ik een fleecekleedje van de Ikea gebruikt, kosten 2,79. Die van de Ikea is nog iets dikker zelfs dan die van de Zeeman en iets groter. Als eerste maak je je kleedje vierkant. Ze zijn vaak rechthoekig en dat is niet zo handig. Je vouwt een punt naar binnen zodat je een driehoek krijgt en daar onder nog een rechthoekig stukje Dan knip je het rechte stuk af, zodat je een driehoek overhoud. Een hulpje is handig om het wat strak te houden, maar het kan ook prima zonder Het enge deel, namelijk het hoofdgat knippen. Begin liever te klein dan te groot, je kan er namelijk niet iets bij aan plakken. Ik heb gekozen voor een diameter van ongeveer 20 cm. Deze mag nog wel iets ruimer, maar het voordeel is nu dat je het zelf in je nek niet zo snel koud krijgt. Bepaal eerst het midden van je poncho en meet dan de 20 cm uit. Knip daarna een halve cirkel uit de deken. Dan moet er natuurlijk nog een hoofdgat voor je kindje komen. Maak een horizontale opening van 22 cm breed, 12 cm onder je eigen hoofdgat. Eigenlijk is je poncho nu al af, want het voordeel van fleece is dat je het niet hoeft af te werken , want het rafelt niet. Maar ik vond het nog een beetje kaal dus maakte ik van de restjes die ik nog van het rechthoekige stuk had twee kraagjes. Knip 2 stroken, bij mij waren ze 53 x 10 cm en 45 x 8 cm. Meet dit wel even na, de lengte, dit is de omtrek van je hoofdgat + 2 cm Stik de uiteinden aan elkaar. Nu zet je de kraagjes vast aan je poncho. Ik zette ze aan de binnenkant vast en vouwde ze daarna om en stikte ze nog een keer door Zoals je ziet heb ik helaas wat plooitjes er in omdat mijn kraagje iets te ruim was. Meet dit dus goed uit! Fleece rekt vaak een beetje mee. Doe het zelfde met het kraagje voor je kindje. En dan is dit je eindresultaat Ik heb het kraagje nog een beetje opgeleukt met 2 houten knoopjes . En dan is je draagponcho echt klaar om een lekkere wandeling te gaan maken met je kleintje! Veel plezier ermee!
