I love baby showers. I really do. Especially the kind where you just kind of hang out and chit chat and swap pregnancy/birth/motherhood stories and eat yummy food and ooh and aah over the decorations and cute presents and favors. Those are my favorite. Tonight I got to attend one such shower and had a fabulous time. Two gals were being honored tonight, one who's due with her 3rd boy in about a week and another who's expecting her 3rd girl towards the end of November. Cool, huh? Of course making baby stuff is a real treat for me, so I thoroughly enjoyed spending this afternoon creating some one-of-a-kind onesies to gift to my fellow expectant mommys. I did something similar a while back for another friend's shower and had such a good time with it then that I thought I'd try it again. ( I have to say, Pinterest came in real handy when I was looking for ideas. Do you Pinterest yet?) As usual I started with a couple packs of white onesies, but this time I bought those kimono-style tees as well because they're just so stinking cute. Here's the boy batch which includes... ... an appliqued elephant... ... a gray linen whale with tiny button eye... ... a creeping button caterpillar... ... and a dapper polka dotted bow tie. The girl batch included... ... a strip of lace with some mother-of-pearl buttons down the center... ... a floral birdy... ... white eyelet ruffle trim... ... and a pink knit ruffle. And just for a little humor, each one got one of these as well. (In case you can't tell, these are appliqued to the backside.) I wish I'd had time to take a picture of them packaged, but I was in a little bit of a rush. All I did was roll up each onesie and tie it with some twine. I had some little tin buckets and filled them with the onesies, then attached a tag to the handle with a pink or blue ribbon. I had so much fun making these- hope my friends like them, too!

Mining my vintage craft and sewing pattern book collection resulted in this neat smocking tutorial find. This wonderful tutorial explains how to prepare your fabric for smocking without the need of a smocking pleater or iron on transfers. In addition, there is an explanation of how to modify your pattern for smocking and a diagram of several smocking stitches. Loads of information in just a few short pages! Nice information on how to modify your pattern to allow for smocked gathers: How to create the gathers using your sewing machine: Information and diagram of a few smocking stitches: I love the can do attitude of this author. She shows you how to tackle a project that looks complicated by breaking it down into manageable steps using tools you already have on hand. The result? An adorable little girl's dress. And these techniques could be used on any article of clothing -- a special accent on a blouse or on a lovely nightgown for yourself. Enjoy this bit of wisdom from the past!

Don't you just love free patterns! Today I am giving you the link to my free baby top-knot knitting pattern. Update: Pattern now has instructions for both knitting in the round and knitting flat. It is knit in the round and is very, very simple! I wrote it as a starter pattern for people learning to knit in the round. It uses double knit or light worsted weight yarn and has instructions for 5 sizes ranging from preemie to 2 years. I know many, many knitters in the UK hate knitting in the round (but they dislike sewing up seams too!!!) whereas my US friends are much more comfortable with it . I have a little theory about this! If you learned to crochet first and then to knit, you are comfortable knitting in the round - if you didn't learn to crochet, or only learned much later, you are a two needles only sort of person - and as crochet is so much more popular in the US, and only just starting to gain in popularity here, there are more "in the rounders" in the States. So there you have it - my theory - but let's get back to point of the post!! The free pattern can be downloaded here. It is also in the Knitting Patterns tab at the top of the page, so you can get those knitting needles out and get knitting today!
