It's DIY day again here on Fawn Over Baby! You're going to looooooove this one! I posted to my instagram that I just can't seem to leave Kenzie's playroom alone and that pretty soon she will have no room to play! Although the photos don't seem like it is filled with toys and a crazy amount of diy projects, you are only seeing the cleaned up side of the room! :/ We have somehow collected several magnet toys over the past year and poor Kenzie just uses them to stack or line up in a row, since we do not have a magnetic surface anywhere in our home. Our stainless steel fridge had us fooled - it is not magnetic. So, I decided to add a magnetic board to her play space, so she has a place to actually use her collection as they were meant to be used. I look at it as a science activity that would be fun for her to experiment with. Even as an adult, if I have two magnets in my hand, I find myself clicking them together and sometimes watching them slowly connect. I'm weird I guess but you have to admit it's pretty fascinating. So project "Magnent Board" was called into action! I found so many clever/genius parents hanging oil drip pans on their walls, creating a nice spacious area to display their magnets (here, here & here). So I went to wal-mart and found one for under $12, score!! With me being chalkboard obsessed and all, I decided to take it a step further and apply my own homemade chalk paint (because I have so much of my ingredients left from my last project) in the color white to create a crisp clean canvas. I then went on to fancy up our magnet letters, I purchased from Target's $1.00 clearance aisle, and painted them gold! I hung up the pan with velcro command strips and it was ready for magnet mania! So here is the short and skinny on How-To Make Your Own Life-Size Magentic Chalkboard! Supplies: Xtra Large Oil Drip Pan Chalkboard Paint (I made my own, here) Magnent Letters Gold Spray Paint Large Velcro Command Strips Instructions: Roll on your chalkboard paint and let dry (Just Spray Paint if you prefer it without chalkboard.) Condition your chalkboard by rubbing chalk over entire area, then wipe off. If you want to pretty up your magnents: Just lightly spray paint magnet letters. Several coats needed. That's It - Your Toddler Life-Sized Magnetic Chalkboard is ready for display! I added a little garland to cover up the embossed lettering that peeks out a bit & plus a little bit of frill never hurt anyone :) Just a side note: McKenzie's playroom is never this tidy. I cleaned it up just for you! :) I loved how the gold letters turned out, so I decided to add a few more colors. I have posted a lot of things I have made for my son's farm theme party in previous posts, so today I am posting how to build a barn backdrop. This is a very easy and simple way to make a barn. Supplies: Red Tri-Fold Project Board Tape Measure White Duct Tape Black Cardstock or Construction Paper Yellow Cardstock or Construction Paper Pencil or Pen Box Cutter Banner Hot Glue Gun or Regular Glue Farm Animal Cutouts I did not take pictures of me measuring anything (I know I should have, but I was also dealing with an almost terrible two year old at the moment) First thing you want to do is get you measuring tape and measure your angles. You will have two different size slants on each side of the barn, so it is important you measure them before cutting. Use your pen or pencil to mark where you need to cut. Once you have your markings, you will use your box cutter to cut out the shape of the barn. Next you will cut your roof out of 12x12 cardstock pieces of paper. I believe I made the roof 3.5"x12" and cut about 6 strips of it. You can see where it was pieced together, but it gives it the look of shingles on the barn. Once you have it cut out, glue it down. Take another piece of 12x12 black cardstock and lay it towards the top of the barn for the chicken's coop (I cut some of the cardstock off to make it a little bit smaller). Now take your handy dandy white Duct Tape and tape down the chicken coop. For the barn doors. I laid the tape down to where I thought it should go and didn't really measure. Where the outer sides of the doors are, I lined up the tape with the crease in the tri-fold board and then placed white Duct Tape in a "X". I then cut a piece of Duct Tape in half to make it skinnier for the middle to break the doors in two sections. It does not have to be perfect...trust me, mine is far from it, but its so cute! I bought my banner from Hobby Lobby and used the 40% off coupon and got it for under $3. The banner has 12 pennants, but I could not fit all of them on there, so I cut 6 pennants off. I hated to waste the other 6, so I am saving them and will use them as a banner in front of the table for decoration. Hot glue to ends to the roof to where the banner will hang slightly over the barn doors. Take your yellow piece of cardstock and cut different size and angles of triangles. I did two different layers, so it looks like hay. Now you are ready to start adding your animal cutouts and you will be all set for your barn backdrop. Everything was bought from Hobby Lobby! Overall price for barn: Tri-Fold Board - $2.40 (used a 40% off coupon) Box Cutters - $1.99 Cardstock - $.59 x 5 = 2.95 Banner - $2.40 (used a 40% off coupon, bought it at a separate time than the tri-fold board since you can only use one coupon per day) White Duct Tape - $4.99 Animal Cutouts - FREE Hot Glue Gun - FREE (already owned it) Measuring Tape - FREE (already owned it Add Georgia Tax 7% Total: $13.19 Cant beat it! This was a super fun project and knowing it is for my little boy's party makes it that much more fun to make! If you make it, I would love to see how yours turned out.

Oh my, it is nearly two years later and I am FINALLY posting pictures! I have seriously got to get a handle on that! We have SO much fun putting together our Epic vacation bible school every year and I wanted to share with you what we have been up to! With it nearing VBS season again I thought I would take a trip down memory lane and share with you some great ideas that you can use for your own VBS! This year (2014) the theme was Wilderness Survival. The vision was to decorate the church with both desert and jungle themes! This was my first time in the role of "lead decor" and I had NO idea what I was doing (picture having to keep this all in fire code, yikes!) but luckily it all came together in the end! I will try to explain my technique for making things as I go... Here we covered the wall in kraft paper (Lowes or Home Depot in the painting section). Using tan wall paint and a large rectangle sponge, we "stamped" the wall to create bricks then went back and outlined sections in dark brown to make them stand out. It goes really fast if you stick to groupings of stone instead of every single one. The "sand" is just tan fabric by the yard from Joann's. I believe we ordered a few bolts online. The camel prop was ordered from the VBS catalog (we have since created out own VBS curriculum). The rocks are painted pieces of styrofoam. Keep going to see how we did the palm trees and vines. This large hallway I wanted to look like a cave! We used brown paper bags (amazingly cheap on dollartree.com) and crinkled them up and stapled them to the wall. WARNING: this took forever so I would suggest you stretch them as your staple to cover way more wall with less bag. And MUCH less staples! The effect in here was amazing! Here are our palm trees! We used pool noodles to create these. Cut a hole in a box a tad smaller than the noodle (so it stands up), cut the bottom off brown paper bags, and string them onto the noodle! I put a large paper plate on top to tape the leaves to. The leaves are just traces and cut from a roll of non-fade green paper. Drape the base in burlap or tan fabric to look like sand. That last picture is of our class photo area! The vines were my favorite craft! We used plastic table cloths from the Dollar Tree in a couple of different shades of green. These were really easy and each table cloth yeilds a ton of vines. Fold your tablecloth the long way a few times will it is about 5" wide. Trim the sides so you end up with long strips. Cut diagonal lines to the middle. TIP: make sure you stagger them so you dont ever cut all the way through! And even if you do you can always use short vines too! We used these EVERYWHERE! They were great fillers and really tied the theme together! As you will see in the second picture, we also used nets and hula skirts (dollartree.com) everywhere! The monkeys were also ordered online and below I will tell you how we made the rope vines... These rope vines were made using cut, twisted and staples brown paper bags. If I did this again, I would use skinny strips of rolled kraft paper instead. If would have gotten done much faster! We stapled leaves (again cut out of the non-fade paper) when we were done. These also went everywhere and were great for covering large expanses like the ceiling in the cafe. We also wrapped them around the check in area. Also on the ceiling you will see colorful paper lanterns. These are from Oriental Trading Company. This giant tree was my biggest project! The frame is made from PVC. It ended up being 12 feet tall! We used the rolls of brown kraft paper here as well. It is simple... roll it out, wrinkle it up, stretch it out, and tape it on top to bottom! The last picture shows you what it looked like from the inside. The branches were made the same way but left wrinkled and twisted. I wanted to add more but we ran out of time! This hallway is always the kids favorite. The black light hallway! Luckily one wall was already dark, the other we wrapped with a roll of black non-fade paper. The volunteers had fun make fish, octopus, turtles and other sea creatures using white paper and fluorescent paint! These were then stapled onto the wall. The floor was covered in clear balloons that we squirted with the florescent paint on the inside. The jellyfish are paper lanterns lightly painted with fluorescent paint, with streamers and white string hanging from them. The ceiling also had streamers and nets. The openeing to this hallways was made to look like a waterfall. We used clear celo wrap, paper bags (done in the same way as the cave hallway) and the flowers were made using more non-fade paper. And because the nursery kids are important too... we gave them a little decor!
Oh how I wish I was someplace where hibiscus flowers are in bloom! On the other hand, I suppose making it through a brutal winter help...
