The frozen treat goes by many names, but it seems that almost every country has one or more variations on a shaved-ice dessert. The basic foundation is always the same: sweet syrups poured over crushed or shaved ice—a quintessential warm-weather treat. But regional variations abound. The “snowball” traces its roots back to Baltimore, where it’s made with shaved ice and often topped with marshmallow. New Orleans also has its own take on the snowball, made with ice shaved so fine it’s usually served with a straw. “Shave ice” hails from Hawaii, a variation on the Japanese version, kakigori. Whereas ice is otherwise only used to cool down volcanoes, these island versions often come in a signature “rainbow” flavor and sport toppings of vanilla Ice Cream and sweet azuki beans. It’s summer and I’m whipping out all kinds of sweet deliciousness today! If you’re a fan of sweet red beans or Azuki bean paste, you will love this Korean spin on shaved ice. Korean Shaved Ice (or Patbingsu in Korean) is not only refreshing and delicious but it’s also fun to eat! Similar to Hawaiian shaved ice and snow conesmochi It’s summer and we’ve been on a DIY dessert kick.
Today I don't feel like detailing bento for some reason, but just in case some of you may be curious about these bentos I'll write as usual what I fixed for bento. This curry contains scallop, shrimp, onion, and some sorts of mushrooms. Hubby gets shiratama zenzai (dumplings with azuki) for a treat, which contains nata de coco and canned mikan besides them. I sent him a mini bottle of sweet condenced milk as well to make it even yummier. Another bento, pieces of pan fried salted-salmon, scrambled egg with nameko (mushroom) sause, pork and shishitou (green pepper) stir fry. So simple but my kind of bento. Since it's been muggy here lately I'm on a shave ice kick at the moment. It's a soothing refreshment for your burning body on a too hot day. This time of every year, I get this old school ice shaver out of the shelf. Isn't he too cute? Yes, what I did want to write most this time was actually this!! I up it on my blog this time of every year though hehe. We call it *Kyoro chan* because his eyes roll from side to side as you're turning the handle. *Kyoro Kyoro* means rolling eyes. Though he is such adorable, he is suspected of being older than I am. I want to share this vintage cute bear-shaped shave ice maker before it breaks up by our overuse lol. I've been craving koori shiratama (shiratama with shave ice) lately, but I don't have a place nearby that has good ones so I made it myself. Though I don't really like Japanese sweets or matcha flavored ones, this one was delicious! I'm so happy with the result yeeey. Hopefully I'll post shiratama in detail sometime soon.

I felt compelled to compare Matsumoto's shave ice with Aoki's next door. To do a true scientific comparison, I should have ordered the same flavor but... I was eager to try something new too. So, we got the li hing mui (kind of a sour plum) flavor on shave ice, red azuki beans + vanilla ice cream. And a plastic cone -- much less messy than a paper cone. Verdict: Li hing mui is nice in small doses, but a whole cone of li hing mui is a little much. Although I normally don't like red beans, these azuki beans + vanilla ice cream were yum... Matsumoto's has more of that old-Hawaiian atmosphere, but Aoki's also serves a very good (possibly better?) shave ice with less of a wait. Oahu, Hawaii
