Want to make reading primary sources engaging and fun? This easy-to-run primary source-based collaborative lesson had my students hooked! Students read primary sources about the civilizations of the Americas (Aztec, Maya, and Inca) and answer questions on a Google Form. Each correct answer earns groups a 3x5 card to build a tower with. The tallest tower wins! In a fun twist, students also get to choose a “power-up” card for 15 correct answers which allows them to win extra classroom-supply-type building materials (such as paperclips, tape, etc.) I could not believe it when students asked me to do more of these lessons, even with reading challenging primary sources! Here’s what’s included: Teacher instructions A primary-source Google Form that gives immediate feedback. Correct answers reveal a primary source summative phrase that students write on the 3x5 card which holds them completely accountable! Once the phrase is written on the card, it is ready to be used in a tower! Reproducible Power-Up cards This activity is both fun and skill-based! ➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖ Our World History Curriculum, including Ancient History lessons and Medieval History lessons, are key-concept based, focussing on the “big six” key concepts for social science, often referred to as GRAPES. Also, students will build a framework, scaffolding future learning with the key concepts that will be repeated throughout their academic careers. Each unit comes with notes, graphic organizers, and review worksheets that have the GRAPES key concepts in mind: G= Geography R= Religion A= Achievements P= Politics/Government/Leadership E= Economy S= Social Classes ➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖ ❤️❤️❤️About Mr. and Mrs. P, the teachers behind Instructomania: We are a Middle School teacher duo with over 40 years of experience in the Middle School classroom! THE DRESDEN CODEX The Dresden Codex is an ancient Mayan book dating as far back as the 13th or 14th century. It was rediscovered in the city of Dresden, hence the book’s present name. Only four Mayan manuscripts are known to still exist worldwide, of which this is the oldest and best preserved. The Dresden Codex comprises 78 pages of Mayan hieroglyphics, numerals and figures which provide accurate astronomical tables, ritual and divination calendars, calculations of the phases of Venus, eclipses of the sun and moon, instructions relating to New Year ceremonies, and descriptions of the locations of the Rain God, which culminate in a full-page miniature showing a great deluge. The codex has played a key role in the deciphering of Mayan hieroglyphics and the understanding of the Mayan Calendar. In addition to the Dresden Codex you'll also receive five other ancient South American manuscripts each of which has been scanned in high quality and preserved forever in pdf format - easy to read on your laptop or computer, or transfer to tablet, smartphone, kindle or e-reader.
