The kids love working with clay so much, and these gold coasters are a wonderful way to bring in some art history. The children learn about gold metal working developed by the Incas and Aztecs in the ancient Americas. This project ties in with the fifth grade social studies curriculum at our school, which focuses on the Americas. Taking inspiration from these ancient golden treasures, the kids create clay coasters with their own relief design. Any extra clay is used to create beads and animals, also inspired by the ancient golden objects. We create these in polymer clay, but also included is an alternative for using an air-dry clay like Crayola. The coasters are painted in acrylic. This project is part of our Folk Art in the Americas theme.
