Hurray! We are back in school and back to making music! This week my students learned how to do the newspaper dance. We started with a section of the paper, unfolding it and laying it flat. This was our "dance floor". Students then could dance in their space. Before we started, each group decided what they considered to be "dancing". Most groups said that to be dancing you had to move your arms and legs in some fashion. And so the dancing began... Now, as fun as that was...it was just getting started. Next, we stepped off the newspaper and folded it in half and stepped on again. After a while, students had to move in very creative ways to stay on the newspaper. We had a great time defining "dance", practing making the fraction 1/2 and movin' and groovin' to some great tunes. With older students we created math sentences like "We are standing in 1/8th of the space that we started on." Alright, y'all. So, earlier this month my Firsties and I did a little newspaper mini-unit. To be honest, I wasn't at all sure how it was going to go down, but they LOVED it. So, I thought I would share. Hope it helps you!!!!!!!!!! We began our unit as I begin all of my units- with a KWL chart. And let me tell you, the kids cracked me up with their "prior knowledge" about newspapers. For example, did you know that, "Newspapers can tell you there are cool pants you can buy at Old Navy?????" Direct quote. HA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! After making our KWL chart, we dove into all things newspapers. Manufacturing, sections, writing headlines, newspaper funding, jobs at newspapers, ads, etc. and so forth. Here are some of the activities I used: HIRE ME, MR. EDITOR! So, I'm always astounded by the sheer number of people it takes to publish a newspaper. And, the talent it takes to fill all of the jobs at a paper is soooooo diverse. So, the kiddos and I spent some time talking about the various jobs available at a paper (editor, journalist, sports writers\, cartoonist, etc.) Then, after talking a bit about each job and the talents that would be required, I had the kids apply for a job at the newspaper. They had to list the job they were applying for and give reasons why they would be good at it. Of course all of my boys wanted to be Sports Writers. Go figure.... Hire Me, Mr. Editor! (Click the picture preview to download) HEADLINE SORT Throughout out unit we spent a lot of time talking about the diversity of information that's present in a newspaper. The kids were amazed to learn that papers give so much information about so many topics- sales, world events, sports, etc. And, they thought it was FABULOUS that the newspaper also has games! Ha!!!!! After surveying all of the information you can find in the newspaper, we discussed how editors organize all of the articles in the newspaper into sections by topic. To give the kiddos practice "being an editor" I made this reading center. Kids read the headlines, and decide which section of the paper the article would be found in. Hot Off the Press Headlines (Click the picture preview to download) WRITING HEADLINES The culminating activity for our unit was writing our own newspapers of course so we used this activity to practice writing headlines before writing the headlines for our own stories. Extra, Extra! Read All About It! I Can Write Headlines! (Click the picture preview to download) At the end of our Newspaper Unit, we were privileged enough to tour our local newspaper's press building, The Kansas City. It was FABULOUS! If you have a newspaper in town, you should DEFINITELY take a field trip to tour their presses. It is so worth it and the best part is that most newspapers offer the tour for FREE. Pure Awesomeness. TYPE SETTING: THE EVOLUTION OF NEWSPAPERS To prepare my kiddos for the Kansas City Star tour, we spent a couple of days discussing how newspapers are put together. First we talked about modern-day publishing which uses computers and publishing software to layout a newspaper. Then, we discussed how newspapers were put together BEFORE the advent of computers (Of course the fact that computers didn't used to be EVERYWHERE is totally unfathomable to my kids. They. make. me. feel. old.) When we talked about old-fashioned type setting, the kids learned about how Type Setters used to lay out entire newspapers by hand using font molds and frames. CRAZ-I-NESS, right? And that's not even the craziest part!!!!! All of the stories had to be laid out BACKWARDS in a MIRROR IMAGE. I get overwhelmed just thinking about it. Thank heavens for modern-day technology, huh? In an effort to give my kiddos a little old-fashioned type-setting fun (ha!), I had the kids time themselves stamping a sentence backwards. They LOVED this. And, it took them FOREVER. Then we compared how long it took them to stamp the sentence backwards with how long it took me to type the sentence on the computer. No contest. Newspaper Type Setting (Click the picture preview to download) NEWSPAPER PUBLISHING And, what newspaper mini-unit wouldn't be complete without the kids making their our own newspapers??? Here's the newspaper we made as a class before the students each made their own paper. Each newspaper the kids made included a feature story about our trip to the Star, an editorial about a topic of their choice (one little boy wrote about the quality of the school cafeteria's chicken poppers- HA!!!!!!) and coverage of the Super Bowl. Each kiddo also had to draw one ad, one comic, and report about the weather. Then, after the kids finished their newspapers, we had a publishing party and the kids read one another their "hot off the press" papers. SO cute. 2019 Topic 5: Maps and Plans Well hello everyone, Keren here and we're being whisked off around the world for a look at artistic cartography, blueprints and contours ( and not of the make-up artists kind!!). This topic is rich with imagery hopefully the following pictures will guide our way through meandering streams, rivers and delightfully designed structures. We start with this gorgeously designed travel journal by Emma Williams, which combines several ways of using map images. The little compass and other details finishes it perfectly. Emma Williams If the idea of being artistic using a map appeals to you, then look no further than this intricate and clever portrait. Ed Fairburn We use maps and plans to guide the way and show us where we should go. Maybe you'd like a more stylish representation of where you are, just like this papercut marvel. KMO Studio I love the way that the different undulations in the landscape are represented by the fabric and stitching. Mary Bryning Perhaps you prefer more abstract representation? In pursuit of inspiration for this topic, I learned about choropleth (or thematic) mapping and I thought it would be amazing to have a modern stamped or painted styled representation of it. Source Some plans are stylish even without purporting to be! I adore this patent drawing for a 1932 photographic camera. I'm seeing dry wiped Fresco Finish over some paint or cardstock and perhaps some white embossing powder!! Displate We all know the sort of vision that appears in our heads when we think of vintage maps. I thought this example was a particularly stylish one. Retrographik Then from the old and aged, to the very modern and cool.. Source Maps don't need to be literal, they can be representational. I think that he next two are gorgeous! I'm sure I'm not the only one thinking that this would be a great idea with Alison Bomber's sentiment stamps! Stonephoto or this cute and quirky dog portrait? @fetchandcanter When I think about maps and plans, my memory is dragged back to A level Geography and having to create contour diagrams and plans. Be sure to visit Miriam's blog, it's great! Paul Klee (1879 – 1940) is a German/Swiss painter. His work belongs to modern art. Klee developed mainly as an autodidact and left more than 9000 artworks. In 1912 he saw the work of Picasso and Malevich and met Robert Delaunay, who believed colour is the most important element in a painting. After a trip to Tunisia in 1914 Klee started to paint more colorful and abstract. He painted landscapes, portraits, animals, mythology, mysterious machines. In his work he combined abstract and figurative shapes. Klee 's work cannot be described in one single word. Surrealism, cubism, abstraction are terms which are applicable to his paintings. He is classified by expressionism. (Source: Wikipedia) Print any text on drawing sheets or choose an old book page. I had chosen the Wikipedia page about Paul Klee. Show Klee's artwork 'Castle and sun' and discuss the characteristics: Klee used just squares, rectangles and triangles. What colors are used? The students use a crayon in a color that contrasts with the watercolor paint (sharp point to make thin lines) and draw a frame around the text. Then they draw a building consisting only of rectangles, squares and triangles. Do not use a ruler, because the text provides sufficient support. Paint with watercolour. Choose cold or warm colors. Do not allow the same colour next to each together.
