Literary critic Kingsley Amis’ New Maps of Hell: A Survey of Science Fiction (1960) is an analysis of the use of science fiction to address the issues emerging in modern society from the 18th–20th centuries, including topics as rampant as utopian and dystopian literature. The jacket, which seems inspired by the wit of Paul Klee and Joan Miro, defies what most people think of Milton Glaser’s work as seen in the late ’60s until the present. Yet over 50 years ago he was experime
More than any other single designer, Paul Rand was responsible for defining American visual culture in the decades following World War II.
Before the 1950s, most advertising was just copywriting paired with an image with little thought to the overall company or visual identity.
Overview. This unit contains the first half of The Song of Hiawatha, an epic poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow that was published in 1855. Although Longfellow named his hero "Hiawatha," the poem is actually based on the adventures of the Ojibwa culture-hero Manabozho who figures prominently in the Great Lakes unit for this class and also in the Canadian unit. Longfellow's poem begins with Hiawatha's childhood and his dramatic confrontation with his father Mudjekeewis, the West Wind. You will then learn how Hiawatha discovered corn, how he defeated his rival Pearl-Feather, and finally how he courted and married Minnehaha. The unusual meter of the poem (called trochaic tetrameter: DA-duh DA-duh DA-duh DA-duh) was inspired by Longfellow's reading of the Finnish epic Kalevala, which forms part of the European module for this class later in the semester. Language. This poem by Longfellow is one of the classics of American 19th-century poetry. If you are interested in learning about the connections between American literature and Native American storytelling traditions, this is the unit you should read! Story Length. This is one continuous story, although it is divided up into separate episodes which recur one after another. What you will be reading here is one half of the complete poem, leading up to the marriage of Hiawatha and Minnehaha. Navigation. You will find the table of contents below, and you can also use this link to see the story posts displayed on two pages total: Hiawatha. Book Synopsis A gripping mystery about a woman who thinks she's found the love of her life--until he disappears. Before Owen Michaels disappears, he smuggles a note to his beloved wife of one year: Protect her. Despite her confusion and fear, Hannah Hall knows exactly to whom the note refers--Owen's sixteen-year-old daughter, Bailey. Bailey, who lost her mother tragically as a child. Bailey, who wants absolutely nothing to do with her new stepmother. As Hannah's increasingly desperate calls to Owen go unanswered, as the FBI arrests Owen's boss, as a US marshal and federal agents arrive at her Sausalito home unannounced, Hannah quickly realizes her husband isn't who he said he was. And that Bailey just may hold the key to figuring out Owen's true identity--and why he really disappeared. Hannah and Bailey set out to discover the truth. But as they start putting together the pieces of Owen's past, they soon realize they're also building a new future--one neither of them could have anticipated. With its breakneck pacing, dizzying plot twists, and evocative family drama, The Last Thing He Told Me is a riveting mystery, certain to shock you with its final, heartbreaking turn. Review Quotes "Dave pulls off something that feels both new and familiar: a novel of domestic suspense that unnerves, then reassures. This is the antithesis of the way novels like Gone Girl or My Lovely Wife are constructed; in The Last Thing He Told Me, the surface is ugly, the situation disturbing, but almost everyone involved is basically good underneath it all. Dave has given readers what many people crave right now--a thoroughly engrossing yet comforting distraction." -- BookPage "Laura Dave's The Last Thing He Told Me is a thrilling roller coaster of a novel. This smart, intimate exploration of love and family is the foundation of a beautifully constructed mystery filled with twists and turns. A must-read." -- Jean Kwok, New York Times bestselling author of Searching for Sylvie Lee "With dizzying suspense and gorgeous prose, The Last Thing He Told Me tackles tough questions about trust, marriage and what it means to be a family. A page-turner of the highest order." -- Riley Sager, New York Times bestselling author of Home Before Dark "Laura Dave is a master story-teller. Gripping, big-hearted and twisty, The Last Thing He Told Me grabs readers from the very first page and never lets go." -- Greer Hendricks, New York Times best-selling co-author of The Wife Between Us and You Are Not Alone "What starts as an intimate meditation on found families deftly turns into a heart-pounding mystery reminiscent of the best true crime stories. But both work so beautifully in this gripping, perfectly-paced novel. I dare you to stop reading." -- Susie Yang, New York Times bestselling author of White Ivy About The Author Laura Dave is the national and international bestselling author of several critically acclaimed novels including Eight Hundred Grapes and The First Husband.
