I have learned (the hard way) that not all social skill deficits are one & the same. In an effort to save time, I tried to have grade level social skills groups. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but once my groups got underway it became pretty clear that the children in my groups had very different skill sets. There I was, trying to save time by teaching all of my students social skills at the same time. While struggling to meet the needs of my students and keep them engaged, I had to ask myself, 'Was

Listening and following verbal or oral directions is an important skill that many students lack. You may relate to Charlie Brown's teacher after going over step-by-step directions. Students often hear the sound the teacher's voice is making, but fail to tune into the meaning of the words. When students aren't actively listening, they miss important information that can impact their academic AND behavior in the classroom. One way you can help your students practice active listening so they will follow directions is with a fun activity called Listen and Draw. Listen and Draw is a great activity to do with your class at the beginning of the year when you are teaching class procedures. Include these with your plans after breaks as a warmup plus a good reminder about practicing listening and following directions. Grab a free copy of FREE Listen & Draw - Following Directions Activity. Sources to make my blog post graphics can be found HERE. Click HERE to read my blog's disclosure statement.

Download my FREE Calming and Alerting Sensory Cheatsheet! I look forward to connecting with you and sharing SpEd Spot tips and FREEBIES! Download the Sensory Cheatsheet Built with ConvertKit Now that school is out I have been focusing my efforts on organizing my thumb drive. This is a HUGE task since my thumb drive holds pretty much every lesson, handout, and worksheet I have made over the past year. It is so important to me that I keep it attached to my school badge (this is mostly because I kept leaving it in my computer at home and my boyfriend was tired of dropping it off at school!). While organizing this summer, I plan to cute-ify a bunch of handouts and share them here. The first handout is Calming & Alerting Supports for the Classroom Cheatsheet. This year I became super interested in understanding the sensory system. Initially, I was looking to better meet the needs of my students with autism. But, the more I learned the more I realized I could better meet the needs of all of my students through tapping into their senses. Additionally, I knew that the general ed teachers in my building would also benefit from learning a bit more about the sensory system. This handout is geared towards helping all educators better regulate their students sensory system whether a student needs alerting input or calming input. I broke the strategies up by senses since the sensory system is obviously impacted by our senses! Enjoy! Sensory Supports for the Classroom
