Few authors in literary history have had the ability to craft dialogue and bring characters to life as elegantly, ironically and astutely as British author Jane Austen. Montblanc has created the Writers Edition Homage to Jane Austen to celebrate one of English literature’s most famous authors. This edition brings to life the Regency era, when noble country estates were the scene of great parties held for the purpose of cultivating social relationships and forging marriage alliances. The fluting of a classical column embellishes the elegant sandstone-grey resin barrel, along with Jane Austen’s signature. The contrasting grey-blue cap references the type of double-collared Regency coat typically worn by gentlemen such as Mr Darcy in Pride and Prejudice. Gold-coated rings on the barrel and platinum-plated fittings add finishing touches to the design. The engraving of the Roman numerals XLIII on the cap ring are a reference to the chapter of the novel in which Elizabeth Bennet sees Mr Darcy’s estate for the first time. The title page of her novel Sense and Sensibility, published in 1811, merely declared the work to have been written ‘By a Lady’. This statement of authorship adorns the cap top of the Writers Edition Homage to Jane Austen Limited Edition, along with the Montblanc emblem. The silhouette of the writing instrument itself resembles a wax seal stamp. The clip is every bit as unusual as the cap. Shaped like a braided cord with a drawstring closure, it resembles that of a ‘reticule’, a type of bag used by women around 1800 to carry their powder, mirror and the indispensable pocket handkerchief. The only known silhouette of Jane Austen, which shows her delicate features, is immortalised as an artistic engraving on the handcrafted, rhodium-coated solid Au 750 gold nib.

Learn why you need to stop saying that author's purpose is as easy as PIE and how to help your third graders move beyond it.
I love teaching author's purpose...maybe it's the cozy PIE image it conjures up, or maybe it's the fact that for most kids, this is a concept that they "get" for the most part (with a little bit of explaining and some hands on practice). It's kind of the opposite of long division that way, if you know what I mean! Read more about Author's Purpose and how to teach it in this post by The Teacher Next Door.

Students create a "pie" using the three main reasons an author writes a story: to Persuade, to Inform, or to Entertain (P.I.E). The pie is made with paper plates and this file provides the labels and definitions to complete it. Just cut a paper plate into fourths, staple it to an uncut paper plate, glue the labels on each "piece" of the pie, and then glue the definitions under the correct pie piece. Your students will enjoy this creative twist on learning or reviewing Author's Purpose.
Explore picture books to teach author’s purpose and help children identify if texts persuade, inform, or entertain through storytelling.

The 2017 TEKS introduced new strands, including author's purpose and craft AND Multiple Genres. These new strands require students to think more deeply about author's purpose and evaluate how craft elements help the author achieve that purpose. Because of the increased skill difficulty and the expansion of genres, students in upper elementary, middle, and high school will need to push past P-I-E (Persuade, Inform, Entertain) to explain what the author's purpose is. To critically think about author’s purpose, a student must situate themselves three different ways, 1) as a reader who comprehends the text itself, 2) as a writer who can identify elements of author’s craft, and 3) as an audience member who consumes the text. This packet is designed to help students begin to think more critically about author’s purpose. Once students have mastered the language used to connect author’s purpose to craft, they will need to further develop the skill by adding evidence and explanations. This packet includes anchor charts for the students to reference throughout the school year. They contain words the students can use to describe what the author is doing. They also contain elements of craft and structures that an author MIGHT use when they write in a specific mode. Anchor Charts Included: Informative Texts Argumentative Texts Literary Texts Dramatic Texts Poetry Multi-Modal Texts Blank Chart This packet also includes sentence stems to get your students started using more sophisticated terms to talk about author's purpose, as well as samples for three different texts.
November is one of my favorite months in the classroom! I just love all of the fall colors of our crafts and craftivities, fun Thanksgiving books, and the excitement of the holidays just around the corner. It's also a very busy time and we seem to be trying to find the time to plan all of those activities we want to include in our classroom. November is the perfect time to teach author's purpose, especially with the author's purpose is as easy as PIE theme! Your littles will love being author's purpose chefs! I wanted to drop in and share some methods, songs, and a freebie I have used over the years to teach this skill. Hopefully, this will help you out a little with your planning for the next couple of weeks! These are some of my favorite books to use in November and work for author's purpose. I always try to do at least one craftivity a week, if not more. I have kids who ask everyday, "What are we going to make today?" So, I try to keep them happy! After reading a Thanksgiving themed book about turkeys, students record details on the feathers that help them decide what the author's purpose is. Students then record the author's purpose in sentence form on the white paper portion. Every week, I like to keep a cooperative group activity going related to our comprehension skill. We may do this during whole group reading or during centers. I have four envelopes stuffed with a book or passage and recording sheets. I usually either get passages from TPT or from www.readworks.org. Each day, I rotate the envelopes among the groups so that students gain exposure to different books or passages and get needed practice working on the skill with their groups. This author's purpose recording sheet is one of my favorites! It can be very difficult for primary students to identify author's purpose, so this sheet provides lots of scaffolding for our little ones. I have done interactive notebooks for the past couple of years. We have one for reading comprehension and one for math. I love this PIE template for author's purpose! The details go on the outside and the author's purpose in the middle. This is something we typically complete whole group. Who doesn't love Clifford?! You have to throw him in to your unit, too! Here is another simple interactive notebook template. Simple, quick, and easy practice! These little flip books and mini-booklets are perfect for independent practice, as well as centers. You could use them with any book or passage you have in your classroom library or at a center. I always have anchor charts and posters handy for reference. These are super important for author's purpose! That vocabulary can be tricky at first. Here is a link to a fun song to help them grasp that new terminology. We would also do book clubs on Friday. You can read more about that in the pack! It's a really fun time to review the concepts learned throughout the week and have a little discussion and snack! These are some discussion cards to keep students focused during book clubs. They love these! I usually assign a group leader to get the discussion going and to keep the group on task. Last year, I blogged about this author's purpose activity I did with my second graders. It was SO FUN! They loved getting to be author's purpose chefs! You can read more about that HERE and grab this fun FREEBIE! Cooking Up Author's Purpose is one of my favorite units I have created! I hope your students love it and you find it useful! It's on sale all weekend, November 7-8, so gobble it up while you can! Have a great weekend!
