5 easy to implement solutions to help your sweet, but slow finishers, get their work done! The reasons behind not finishing are many : some kids are still weak in the skills that they need in order to finish, some kids don’t care about finishing, some kids don’t want to do the next task so the dawdle , some enjoy the constant pushing and encouragement to finish. #1 Let’s start with those who lack in skills needed. Offer to help on 1 problem and let them know that you want to hear them think through the next problem. (This gives some accountability for them to listen to you while you are helping.) When it is their turn to do a problem out loud ( the think through it) don’t jump in and offer assistance too fast. Praise their thinking and willingness to work hard. Fill in gaps in the understanding This is great modeling for the potential peer tutors who are seated near you and are probably listening in. These steps show the other children at the table how to help this struggler should the struggle continue. #2 Buddy Helpers and the GREEN Pen of Greatness Give those fast finishers something meaningful to do. Allow them to assist a friend using the 4 steps above and this poster below. If you give your peer tutors a green pen you can watch this “helping bug” spread like the flu… just kidding spread like wildfire. Maybe your slower finishers just need to motivation to get done so they can get their hands on a green pen! Green Pen The idea for the green pen comes from Amy Green. Brilliant idea! Teacher roams around with some green pens. Completed work gets a green star. In my class we do hearts. Author of completed and accurate work can go on to other things of interest or take another green pen and go help/ look over the work of other friends in class!!! (((purchase a box of green pens from Office Max {here})))) #3 Helping Reluctant Finishers Get it Done: Using Motivational 1/4 sheet and Visual Timers Now what do you do with a child that just does not want to finish? They have the skills, but finishing is not something that they care about. Or they don’t want to do the next assignment, so they are making a “meal” of this one! If this is habitual, call home. It can be a quick call just letting mom, dad, auntie, or other family member know that it’s becoming a habit for the child to not finish even though s/he has the skills to do so. Offer the child a little help. Mention that you have noticed they are not getting their work done. This just isn’t how we do things. Remind them they can ALWAYS ask for help, but you have noticed they KNOW how, but just are moving slower than they should. Give them a 1/4 sheet of paper to help them keep track of finishing on time. Most kids love having the teacher “notice” this change of effort. You can place a sticker over each child. Kids love the dot marker. For some reason that perfectly shaped blob makes everyone happy. Or just make it simple and put a heart over every finished assignment. Utilize a visual timer so they can tell if they are running out of time. I love the classroom timers site!!! Your students will be able to pace themselves better as they watch the fuse burn. The fireworks show is awesome at the end. Have something they miss out on if not done. I will say I have kept a child in for 5 minutes of recess occasionally. Don’t throw things at me. Listen, I think the “don’t take their recess away” movement is right! Seriously don’t throw things at me. But missing 5 minutes of recess really sends a message too. Staying in for 5 minutes in the course of an entire school year can yield a harder worker! #4 Decide if not finishing is OK: Modified Work Some of the kiddos in my room are struggling on every little thing all the time. This is because their age is not matching their academic age. For example, I have a 1st grade 6 year old who is precious, but is at a mid kinder level. Isn’t it OK for him to finish half of the work and tap out? This is modifying. Seriously, if he can do 4 problems (even with help) wouldn’t that indicate that he could eventually finish them all? But the eventual part is the struggle. We don’t have “eventually” in the school day. A phone call home or parent meeting should happen first before work modification begins. All parties need to agree on this. Once you all agree, have the child complete a given amount and then store the unfinished work. #5 Have a Spot to Store Unfinished work: I store mine in this Pacon paper sorter! In December I went back to work after the break and brought in the Pacon Paper sorter. I called it the work in progress condo. I can keep projects we are in the middle of in there and my students can keep their own work in progress there too! I adore Pacon as a company and this paper sorter is the best. Let me tell you why. It was inexpensive. It was so easy to put together, and I am ALL thumbs. It can be painted or covered in contact paper to customize. It easily stores the unfinished work of my slower finishers and the “in progress” work from my week-long intervention groups!!! This product is sturdy and isn’t too big! It fits perfectly under an easel or stands up tall along a bookshelf. It also sits beautifully on a counter top. You can also set it on it’s back to be accessed from the top. LOVE THIS PRODUCT. You must order one NOW. OK but get this… my class is a little “willful” this year. Out of 30 kids I have 14 only children and 1st born kids who “just” got their 1st sibling. This year has been a struggle to keep them engaged in work vs. pretending school is one big playdate. So, look at the brilliant idea I came up with to keep the talking down a bit!!! Lord have mercy, just that little bit of space between desk groups has really cut down on the talking and has improved work completion too!!! Can I get an Amen? I am giving myself a high five right now!!!! You can also stand the sorter up on it’s end. I am going to buy another one and put it in my guided reading area to hold the awesome materials I keep on hand there. Unfinished work and Parent Communication: What do I do with this unfinished work? I send it home on Friday. I attach a note that says something like this: “This is work that your child was not able to finish in class. We discussed work modification, but I wanted you to have this at home in case you can have an older brother or sister or tutor help your child continue to practice the skills we are doing in class.” Grab this parent letter and other freebies below. Remember: high expectations- I expect you to do what I ask and try hard (even if that means doing 1/2 page I asked of you) meaningful relationships - The green pen and helpers Kelley Dolling of the Teacher Idea Factory says you have to “sell the sizzle” in order to get things done. I hope the sizzle of the green pen and the posters and freebies motivate your little stars to rock this out. "One of the best ways for students to edit, is with their peers. Often when editors get a chance to look at another person's writing, they can pick up on quite of few of the mistakes that the original author never would have noticed. This peer editing sheet was created in order to give students a structured and organized way to critically analyze their classroom peers writing efforts."

Collaborative practice in the classroom can facilitate acceptance, cooperation and teamwork. This collaborative activity was created from the rubric of one of my most popular resources and will be offered "free forever" as part of my own collaboration with teacher/authors here on TpT who are committed, as I am, to teach and model tolerance, respect, empathy and compassion for all children in our classrooms and communities. The concept is simple – the results are awesome! Using simple materials such as colored pencils, markers, crayons, paints - each student works independently on his/her “tile.” Once completed, 4 students join their tiles together to form a whole. Simply trim away the excess paper and tape the squares together on the back. Easier still, tape them in place on a large sheet of colored paper. The completed piece is accomplished by turning each square 90 degrees clockwise and measures app.15½ x 15½ inches. Classroom Teachers It’s no secret that integrating art into your subject matter can be highly effective. After all, this product was created based on radial symmetry and fractions! As a math resource, this page is perfect. Also consider the impact a wall of “Heart Hands" could have. What a unique and powerful presentation! Art Teachers This is a must-have for your sub folder - a no-fuss, engaging project for a wide range of grade levels. Better yet, customize the page to complement your own curriculum. Based on your specific directives, this product can be adapted to fit your units on color, line, shape, symmetry, asymmetry, pattern, texture, shading, contrast and more. This is a resource that not only delivers on a number of learning levels - it brings the “fun factor!” Your kids will love the ease of the process, the opportunity to create their own page and finally the “wow” moment of contributing to the cool, collaborative artwork. Enjoy and spread the kindness! Inspired by Charles Perrault’s fairy tale, Disney chose to have his version of Cinderella take place in France as an ode to the original author. In this film, released in 1950, a kind and gentle beauty named Cinderella is forced by her stepmother to work as a maid in her own house after the death of her father. Her only friends are the animals that live in the house and barn. She protects the community of mice living in the manor from the malicious cat, Lucifer, feeding the mice and making them clothes in her spare time. Two of these mice—Jaq and Gus—prove to be unlikely heroes later in the film when they retrieve the key to Cinderella’s locked attic door from her stepmother’s pocket, hauling it up multiple staircases and ultimately freeing the young girl so that she may prove she is the maiden the prince loves. Brave and true, Jaq and Gus were some of the first featured animal sidekicks to a Disney princess and have remained popular with fans since the film’s release. Made in the round in sections, all but the ears and clothing of Cinderella’s loyal companions are worked in one piece. Starting at the neckline and working downward through the body, live stitches are set aside for the arms, left leg, and nose, then placed back on the needles to be completed later. Stitches are picked up from the original cast on and below the neckline in the front to shape their faces. Details such as eyes, hair, and embroidery are added postknitting to bring these little friends to life!

We recently sent off a class book to be published and it's back! I've been doing this for a few years now and I love how excited the kids get when they see their writing in an actual hard-cover book. So this year we celebrated with a book publishing party complete with punch, cookies, and the very first reading of our book. They even made toasts and clinked their plastic cups together. It was a hit with my little authors! I posted about the books last year too. Go here to read and get details if you're interested in getting student books published for FREE too! Speaking of authors, I got to meet and listen to Jane O'Connor read her latest Fancy Nancy book at a signing a few weeks ago. Makes me want to be a children's author. How fun would that be to travel around reading your books to little ones at books stores and schools? (Don't you love her fancy accessories?) Well I hope everyone has a wonderful Easter day tomorrow! Don't you throw out those egg cartons though, I've got a plan for them and freebies coming soon.

About this Professional Email BookProfessional emails are too important to mess up. They are evidence of something that you said or did, and as such, they can be your best friend or your worst nightmare. Every day, a staggering amount of business communication takes place. This book will help you not only write more professional business e-mails but also improve your overall business English. "Know your context as well as your audience." Like everything in life, emails are not created equal. The same email can be digital gold or digital poop depending on the situation in which it's deployed, so you must always pay attention to context. Even if you send exactly the same email to the same audience, in a different context they will interpret your email differently, as they will approach it with a different mind-frame, together with a different set of beliefs and expectations. When you approach an email in a business setting, the first thing to do is to decide exactly what you want from the exchange and then, what context you are writing in. Is this a close colleague but there is a not-so close colleague included into the email exchange? Is this an invitation to have drinks after work with someone who has worked with you for years and has suddenly decided to change paths in their career? Are you about to fire someone you respect immensely? Are you sending a group email to organise a meeting, or are you asking someone to pay you because they haven't paid their invoice on time again? All these things matter, and are particularly important because you don't have the benefit of body language or facial expressions when you write. People also tend to forget verbal exchanges more readily, but the written word is powerful. "The pen is "mightier than the sword..." (Edward Bulwer-Lytton) and people will judge you based on how you use your pen.I could not possibly list all the people who have influenced me through their work, but I will try to mention a few of the ones who spring to mind in no particular order. These are my business heroes, and without their contribution through their work, I would never have been able to write this book. If I could write a note of advice about emails and business communication to 25-year old me, I would probably send myself the following checklist. I wish someone had told me all this. 1.Forget your ego. Never write with the objective of impressing someone, even if that someone is you! Sometimes we write and then re-read what we have written a few times, then we give ourselves a mental round of applause before sending it. The problem is, our priority wasn't communication in this scenario, it was to feed our ego. Trying to impress people with long over-complicated sentences and words has the opposite effect. Always keep clear communication and context in mind in every exchange. 2.Aim to explain difficult concepts or problems in a simple easy-to-understand way. This shows intelligence, because it means you have digested the concepts and are skilful enough to explain them. When you make concepts sound more complicated than they are, it gives people the impression that you don't understand, because you probably don ´t. 3.If it's not relevant to the situation or the decision being made, don't mention it, it will clutter your communication and could cause confusion. 4.When you need to write important or sensitive emails, stick to the facts. Your emotions or opinions are not important or relevant in most cases.BUSINESS EMAIL: WRITE TO WIN. Guests have traveled from near and far to visit and catch up, while enjoying a feast of sweets, tea, henna, laughter, singing, and joking. Tarana Burke and Dr. Brene Brown bring together a dynamic group of Black writers, organisers, artists, academics and cultural figures to discuss the topics the two have dedicated their lives to understanding and teaching: vulnerability and shame resilience. Contributions by Kiese Laymon, Imani Perry, Laverne Cox, Jason Reynolds, Austin Channing Brown, and more.It started as a text between two friends. Tarana Burke, founder of the 'me too.' Movement, texted researcher and writer Brene Brown to see if she was free to jump on a call. Brene assumed that Tarana wanted to talk about wallpaper. They had been trading home decorating inspiration boards in their last text conversation so Brene started scrolling to find her latest Pinterest pictures when the phone rang. But it was immediately clear to Brene that the conversation wasn't going to be about wallpaper. Tarana's hello was serious and she hesitated for a bit before saying, "Brene, you know your work affected me so deeply, but as a Black woman, I've sometimes had to feel like I have to contort myself to fit into some of your words. The core of it rings so true for me, but the application has been harder."Brene replied, "I'm so glad we're talking about this. It makes sense to me. Especially in terms of vulnerability. How do you take the armour off in a country where you're not physically or emotionally safe? "Long pause. "That's why I'm calling," said Tarana. "What do you think about working together on a book about the Black experience with vulnerability and shame resilience?" There was no hesitation.Burke and Brown are the perfect pair to usher in this stark, potent collection of essays on Black shame and healing. Along with the anthology contributors, they create a space to recognise and process the trauma of white supremacy, a space to be vulnerable and affirm the fullness of Black love and Black life.
