The Magellanic Penguin (Spheniscus magellanicus) breeds along the southern Atlantic coast of Argentina and along the Pacific coast of Chile. Millions come ashore to breed during the South American spring and summer. Despite their population being several million they are considered a threatened species. The threats are destruction of habitat resulting from oil spills, and global warming. Warmer ocean waters have caused displacement of fish and other marine life forms forcing these birds to swim as much as 40 km or 25 miles more to find food. With the return trip it amounts to an additional 80 km or 50 Miles of swimming. This often results in starvation of the waiting mate that remains on shore to attend the nest. During the breeding season they are commonly seen traveling and working together in pairs. The image of this pair was taken along the Argentine coast in the Province of Chubut, Patagonia, Argentina.
