Quinn's 7th (!!!) birthday was back in November (!!!). She had her heart set on a party + sleepover with her two best friends, specifically a reptile-themed party, so we made it happen. She's been fascinated with reptiles for months & would check out books about snakes from the school library every week. We signed her up for a membership to our local nature conservation lab for reptiles & amphibians, which she visits frequently. I shouldn't have been surprised when she requested a reptile-themed birthday. Me: "How about mermaids?" Quinn: "Reptiles." Me: "Unicorns? Llamas?" Quinn: "REPTILES." Me: "Good talk." So we set about gathering ideas for a reptile party. I didn't stress about the details being Pinterest-worthy or Pinterest fails 😅 Quinn was the mastermind of this party, taking part in everything from DIY to decorating to the food prep to figuring out the party favors. I was her willing minion who operated the hot glue gun & gently nixed ideas that were too grand ("Let's give live lizards as party favors!") She & her friends had a total blast, stayed up way too late, woke up way too early, & dived into donuts for breakfast. How sweet is this age?! The sweetest. The balloon garland snake ended up looking like a bunch of green grapes with eyes & we laughed so hard. ↓ in progress ↓ This age & how they form friendship bonds make my heart explode with little heart emojis 💞 Crafts & jammies time. The girls painted & decorated wooden wiggle snakes...... ....and each created a reptile "habitat". There was also a dance party, movie & popcorn time, & a stealthy balloon attack (thanks, girls). The girls went home with favor bags that resembled those live cargo shipping crates. Quinn filled each of the bags with sequin-changing slap bracelets (they remind her of reptile "scales"), gummy snakes (ok, worms), plastic lizards, & ombre clip-on mermaid hair (because why not). Party pieces I used: plastic "habitat" jars | faux palm stems | fruit tape "snakes" We gave Quinn a leopard gecko for her birthday & she's been taking great care of Ray the Gecko.😀 Happy Sssseventh Birthday to our darling & daring girl! This year's party might have been my favorite yet. Although, I'm fairly certain I also said that about his pizza party, dinosaur party, wild things party, ocean party, puppy party, and Mickey Mouse party. Jacob wanted a "rocket ship party" and since we're going to be out of town on his birthday we planned it for one week earlier. I stuck with a loose outer space theme in black, white, and metallics. We picked a morning slot at a local play gym Happy Place Kids Gym and invited all his friends, including his classmates which made this years party larger than all of his previous parties. Having a morning party let me serve simple brunch foods like bagels & cream cheese, muffins, donuts, coffee, etc. I ordered a white cake from Publix as usual and added sprinkles, stars, a rocket ship and an astronaut on top to create a space theme. We filled the goody bags with astronaut ice cream, rock candy, moon pies, space alien water guns, and astronaut lollipops. I always pick out a book to match Jacob's theme and have all his guests sign it as a momento from his party - this year's book was If You Decide to Go to The Moon. The little moon cups might be my favorite detail, but it's a toss up with the astronaut ice cream. Happy Place made the whole process super easy for us. They helped with both set up and clean up and kept things running smoothly. The kids loved playing in the air conditioned gym and there was plenty of space for parents to sit and talk. We learned our lesson two years ago to never plan an outdoor party in June in Florida, and we haven't looked back since. We love you to the moon and back!! I cannot believe it's been almost a year since we celebrated Jack's first birthday! I'm so excited to share some details from his birthday party today, as well as some of the sources of inspiration and how to create a fun fall themed pumpkin patch birthday! It all started with Taylor Swift. Makes sense that T Swift would be the inspiration sources for a 1 year old party right?! Ha! I saw a giant sized
I have posted a lot of things I have made for my son's farm theme party in previous posts, so today I am posting how to build a barn backdrop. This is a very easy and simple way to make a barn. Supplies: Red Tri-Fold Project Board Tape Measure White Duct Tape Black Cardstock or Construction Paper Yellow Cardstock or Construction Paper Pencil or Pen Box Cutter Banner Hot Glue Gun or Regular Glue Farm Animal Cutouts I did not take pictures of me measuring anything (I know I should have, but I was also dealing with an almost terrible two year old at the moment) First thing you want to do is get you measuring tape and measure your angles. You will have two different size slants on each side of the barn, so it is important you measure them before cutting. Use your pen or pencil to mark where you need to cut. Once you have your markings, you will use your box cutter to cut out the shape of the barn. Next you will cut your roof out of 12x12 cardstock pieces of paper. I believe I made the roof 3.5"x12" and cut about 6 strips of it. You can see where it was pieced together, but it gives it the look of shingles on the barn. Once you have it cut out, glue it down. Take another piece of 12x12 black cardstock and lay it towards the top of the barn for the chicken's coop (I cut some of the cardstock off to make it a little bit smaller). Now take your handy dandy white Duct Tape and tape down the chicken coop. For the barn doors. I laid the tape down to where I thought it should go and didn't really measure. Where the outer sides of the doors are, I lined up the tape with the crease in the tri-fold board and then placed white Duct Tape in a "X". I then cut a piece of Duct Tape in half to make it skinnier for the middle to break the doors in two sections. It does not have to be perfect...trust me, mine is far from it, but its so cute! I bought my banner from Hobby Lobby and used the 40% off coupon and got it for under $3. The banner has 12 pennants, but I could not fit all of them on there, so I cut 6 pennants off. I hated to waste the other 6, so I am saving them and will use them as a banner in front of the table for decoration. Hot glue to ends to the roof to where the banner will hang slightly over the barn doors. Take your yellow piece of cardstock and cut different size and angles of triangles. I did two different layers, so it looks like hay. Now you are ready to start adding your animal cutouts and you will be all set for your barn backdrop. Everything was bought from Hobby Lobby! Overall price for barn: Tri-Fold Board - $2.40 (used a 40% off coupon) Box Cutters - $1.99 Cardstock - $.59 x 5 = 2.95 Banner - $2.40 (used a 40% off coupon, bought it at a separate time than the tri-fold board since you can only use one coupon per day) White Duct Tape - $4.99 Animal Cutouts - FREE Hot Glue Gun - FREE (already owned it) Measuring Tape - FREE (already owned it Add Georgia Tax 7% Total: $13.19 Cant beat it! This was a super fun project and knowing it is for my little boy's party makes it that much more fun to make! If you make it, I would love to see how yours turned out.
It's always a pleasure to work with a super creative parent on any party. This past Saturday, we helped style a cute rock star themed birthday party for a little girl who was turning five. The mom had been planning on this party theme for a year. She had picked up the fun banners on clearance that coordinated with the whole theme of the event. Thrift stores also became excellent sources to pick up more party items. Like the fun cassette background to the cupcake table. Which was actually a duvet cover. The pillowcase was used as part of the centerpiece for the kid table. The pink polka dot table cover that the mom used for the cupcake table was another sheet. Cardboard paper amps were also thrift store finds. Vinyl records were placed on our glass cake stands and glittery purple ribbon created the perfect serving trays. Tying coordinating purple ribbon around the popcorn scoop dressed it up. The mom made a fun birthday sign which she placed in a black frame, as well as a coordinating number 5 which she placed above the cupcake table. We supplied the drum set, amp, mic and mic stand, guitar, and tambourines to help set the stage for this rocking fifth birthday party. The mom hung twinkle lights behind two black sheets and a silver tablecloth which she was able to pick up on clearance from Christmas! Feather boas, sparkly microphones, and fun glasses not only were great party favors, but also served as great photo props for when the kids sang up on the "stage". The birthday girl's mom made the cupcake wrappers and picked up cute colorful cupcakes from Sam's Club. We made star sugar cookies and iced them with edible glitter that the mom had also made. Tutorials can be found on the internet for making edible glitter. A simple recipe that consists of sugar, food coloring, and baking. A fun activity for the kids that attended was decorating their own guitar using magic markers and glitter glue. Yes, our creative mom painstakingly cut out twenty of those cardboard guitars herself. We provided the black glitter stars for the guitars.
You know the saying, “Don’t judge a book by its cover?” The same rule can be changed into “Don’t judge a person by its ink.” Getting some body art inked is probably one of the best ways for self-expression—be it a drawing in remembrance of your past beliefs, shenanigans or a minimal tattoo filled with deep meanings. No tattoo design is meaningless or ugly because there’s always something bigger behind it. At least to the person who chose the unique tattoo, that is.
