The Artist Trading Cards are officially in the mail! We had so much fun trading ATC's last year that we definitely wanted to do it again this year, using Valentine's Day: Love and Friendship as our theme. Each 4th grader made 4-6 cards, two designs were made by my instruction (an optical illusion style and a word art) and the remainder were done with the students' own interpretations of the theme. We are trading several through the mail and a couple with classmates. We have mapped our trades, starting with the heart in Georgia, and branching out to 8 other states. We are so looking forward to receiving our trades! I will post the results when everything arrives. Each school receives a set of cards, a tracking map, and a description of our school and community The addition of aluminum foil scraps was a simple but effective way to get a little sparkle!
This is the second set of artist and mediums covered so far. 7th graders- we only went over Picasso and O'Keeffe on Thurs/Fri. We'll come back to the last two artists in a week or so. Artists this time around are Pablo Picasso, Georgia O'Keeffe, Frida Kahlo, Andy Warhol. Our medium choices for creating the cards are blended oil pastel, tissue paper and glue, charcoal pencil with collage and Styrofoam printing. Students must also highlight one element and one principle of art in their cards. The slides below were reviewed in class.
Hello Everyone, it's been a fabulous week here at the Brown household with Ken's birthday Thursday and our 40th wedding anniversary on the same day. Last night we celebrated with the children and grand children having a lovely meal out together and tonight we celebrate with a few friends and neighbours by having a summer garden BBQ. We just hope it doesn't rain after all the wonderful hot sunny weather we had in July. Today I thought I would share four altered playing cards that I have been making (you can seer the previous 4 here that I made in March if you haven’t caught up with them yet) Although I followed the ideas and techniques from Stephanie Ackerman, I am using images and collage pieces of my own. I save quotes and make my own sheets and print out to use in albums, on cards and mixed media projects. I won’t share the process steps in respect for Stephanie and her online class, but suffice to say I am enjoying making these and having fun exploring some mixed media techniques. Thanks for taking the time to stop by and I hope you have a wonderful weekend. hugs {brenda} xx

My goal for Artist Trading Cards this year is to make independent ATC creators. This means, less paper cutting for me and less of the same questions. This also means MORE students who might bring this activity of Artist Trading Cards to work on them outside of class. Here is step number one to make an independent learner. Give the students resources! This is their 'Artist Trading Card Cheat Sheet'. This will be the first card that will go in their ATC's Sleave portfolio. As you can see the first thing it explains is what to write on the back of an Artist Trading Card. Sure, in my class I have a stamp to place on the back (see previous post) , but this will help them know what to write even if they are not in my class. The lower portion of the ATC Cheat Sheet explains their log in information for Creatubbles.com. As I posted on earlier, my students (and the #K12ArtChallenge) will be using this platform for a digital portfolio. This was so stink'n easy to set up. I made a spreadsheet of my classes and they distributed a list of usernames and passwords for all of my students. I placed what was the same for all of them, but they will have to write their code (where you see 1,2,3). This is so they can log in. The lower URL code is going to come in really handy because that is what my students will put on the back of their card to tell people how to access it online. So when you get a trade from my students, you will be able to look online to see the digital work, and perhaps read and Artist Statement, hear the students voice or see a youtube explaining the work of art! I would like to share this worksheet with anyone who can use it. Click here to get to my Teacher pay Teacher page. A generic sheet has been shared with you for free.

Mixed media or collage is a popular technique for creating both artists trading cards. Collages are often created with simply paper, various images and coloured or patterned paper are glued to a suitable substrate. However if other materials are...
When I saw this month's new collage sheets from Alpha Stamps, featuring corsets, for some reason I thought of baseball cards. Wouldn't it be funny if young girls in Victorian times collected and traded corset cards? With that in mind, I designed a set of cards to look as though they had been handled and poured over, and perhaps traded with friends. This photo shows the fronts of four of the cards, and the back of one, plus a fancy box I made for storage. I used the same corset ad on the backs of all the cards. Making the cards was fun. I started with cream colored card stock, cut it to ATC size (2 1/2" by 3 1/2"), and slightly rounded the corners. I dabbed the top with Antique Linen Distress Ink, and then roughed up the edges using a Paper Distresser. After I layered on the images from the collage sheets (plus a measuring tape and a number for each card), I bent corners, folded edges, and sanded down the images. The finished cards. Not only do they look old, they actually feel old! I felt they needed a special box for storage, so I decorated a 3" Chipboard Memory Box using a pretty striped paper, pieces of a doily, and some pearl garland. The top finial was made with an old toy wheel I had, plus a painted wooden ball. Some painted wooden finials made perfect feet. A pretty little scene cut from scrapbook paper makes a nice surprise on the inside of the box. The cards fit the box nicely, if you store them at an angle. If you'd like a complete list of products used for this project, click here. Corset trading cards: collect them! Keep them! Trade them with your friends!
