Hello everyone:) It's me, Elin, with some new ideas for you. This week we are playing with brown and can you think of anything more brown than coffee? I find myself using tags for almost all of my projects, but almost everytime I'm about to use one I find it too white for my project. As you all know, the vintage style is all about the "old look", so I figured some coffee would do the trick. So here's what you need to make coffee-tags at home: Some sort of plastic container to put everything in, powder coffee (doesn't have to be an expensive one), the tags you want to colour, an old newspaper to spill on and some hot water. The first thing I do is to fill up the container with hot water and then I sprinkle on some coffee powder. The amount of coffee depends on how deep colour you want on your tags. You can also adjust this with the time you leave the tags in the coffee bath. Then you put all your tags in the bath; you can colour quite a lot of them at the same time. If they tend to float up, I use a fork or a knife to push them down again. And now we wait... I usually leave them over night, but then again it comes down to what colour you are after. Check them every now and then, and take them out when satisfied. This is my result when I pull them out. While still wet, I sprinkle some coffee powder over them to get the "stained look". When they are dry, the colour has faded a bit and they don't look this intense anymore. And here they are, all dried up and ready. If they are very curly when they have dried, you can pull out your iron and flatten them on high temperature. Now what's left is the fun part; decorating! Here are a few simple ideas on how to decorate: For the tag above I only used stamps. It is the backside of the tags below, which I'll attach to wine bottles for two of my girlfriends ;) For the front I used the stunning papers from Riddersholm Design: Mill Truck from the Fleamarket Collection and Songbird from the Huntington Garden Collection. The mini tags are from the Fleamarket and Huntington cut out sheets. I stamped my papers with this gorgeus vintage stamp from Inkido, called Carte Postale. Other than the papers, I also used heart brads, memo pins, a painted Love Hanger, some Cheese cloth and natural jute fabric. For my bows, I used Shabby Seam Bindings; these colours are "Sky Blue" and "English Lavender". Combined with the natural Jute Twine, it completed my task for this week :) Hope you enjoyed my tutorial and got some ideas from this. With Love
During a cyber crop last weekend, one of the gals used this for a Make & Take. We had just finished up an ATC swap and she thought these would make cute holders, and trust me, they do! You will need: flexible cardboard - cereal boxes work great! assorted papers & embellishments 10 - 15 sheets of plain paper large button 3 feet of string, twine, or thin ribbon scoring tool your choice of adhesive paper cutter hole punch or crop-a-dile 1" or 1 1/4" circle punch 1 - Cut a strip of cardboard 12" long and 3 1/4" wide. Starting at one end score @ 2", 3", 7 3/4", & 8 3/4". Fold on the scoring lines. -If you want to paint the inside of your holder, as I did, now is the time to do so to speed up the project. 2 - To make the pockets each sheet is measured 9" long by 4 1/2" wide. Fold the paer at 3" and then again at 6". Glue the side shut and repeat for each pocket. Using a 1" - 1 1/4" punch, punch a half circle in the top of each pocket: Now that you have all your pockets assembled, you will take two strips of glue down the center of each one and stack one on top the other until you have them all together in one pile. They should accordian out like this: 3 - Now its time to decorate the outside of the holder. Cut the paper the same dimensions as the cardboard. Much easier to cover and embellish if done before attaching pockets. 4 - To attach pockets, glue stack onto the center back of the holder. 5 - To attach button closure, make a hole in the top flap (2" side), make a knot in your string and feed it thru the backside of the flap. Make sure you have at least 3 feet of string to wrap around the holder a few times. Attach a button to wrap string around when closed. 6 - Almost finished! Attach the front pocket to the inside front of the holder. It will fan out when opened: And here's my finished holder: These would also make for great mini brag books for Grandmas, handmade coupon holders for anniversaries, birthdays, new parents, the list is endless! "Hello all, It's me, Ellen Vargo, here again for my last project share for February. Today we'll be working on a master board and cutting it down to make 9 ATC's (ATC = Artist Trading Card with a standard size of 2.5" x 3.5"). We'll be creating a brayered background (shocking!), adding some stamping and lots of stamped collage papers in bright contrasting colors, and adding some paint marks and pen work". Here's one of the finished ATC's ... We'll start with our master board (Heavyweight Smoothy Card) and create a background. This time we'll start with some stamping to create a pattern. I chose the scratchy rectangle from EEV02. I stamped it over and over again, staggering the line-up so it looks sort of like bricks. EEV02 Now it's time for the brayer. I used the following Fresco paints (in the order they appear below) to create a nice background over the stamping. Now we'll stamp some patterns over the painting. We'll use the bold stripes border from EEV03 and Wendy Vecchi's Potting Soil Archival Ink. EEV03 I stamped in both horizontal and vertical patterns over the whole sheet. For the small sections in the middle I just inked up a portion of the stamp. Now it's time for some collage. This is where I started really having fun. Instead of choosing collage papers that coordinated with the background, I decided to purposely choose some papers that were really bright and bold and would contrast with the background. I wasn't sure how it would turn out, but I've learned that when you cut it down to smaller pieces, everything sort of clicks into place. Hold onto your hats! Turquoise, green, magenta, red, yellow! There are stamps from EEV01, EEV03 and EEV04 represented in the collage papers. Then I added some painty markings using the edge of a flat paint brush. I filled in some open areas and painted over some of the collaged areas as well. Then I decided to outline some of the collage pieces. This is where my happy accident took place. I was outlining one of the large collage pieces and went WAY beyond one of the corners ... YIKES! I started to panic a little, but then realized I could just turn it into a new pattern! So instead of one dramatically OUT of place line, I created some fringe with little dots at the end... you're probably seeing a "pattern" emerge with me ... I LOVE patterns! Here's the whole sheet, all marked up, and trimmed down to ATC size, including the little extra bits. I outlined each ATC with a black sharpie paint pen (oil based). I love outlining with this pen. The oil-based paint gives a shiny finish to the border. I like the contrast between the matte chalky finish of the fresco and the glossy border. Now... those extra bits .... what to do... I've been accumulating quite a stock of "extra bits" and didn't know what to do with them. I didn't want to use them as collage because they are on quite heavy card stock. I finally had an A-HA moment! Combine them all together for some patchwork ATC's! I love the random combination of patterns and colors. I stapled each section onto a lightweight card base and VOILA! You may recognize some of these "extra bits" from the samples I made for the debut of my Eclectica stamps for the Stitches trade show. OK... now that we have all these ATC's - what can we do with them? Here are a few ideas... 1. Place card for your next fancy dinner soiree (does anyone have those any more???)... 2. O r... lose the folded tent card, and it's a name badge to wear at the next trade show... (hmmm... think she would wear it? hint, hint). Same lettering style as our journal cover yesterday, just more sketchy / messy style. 3. A custom business card. (used the smallest scratchy shape stamp from EEV02 with Sap Green Archival Ink) 4. The feature of a card front. With more "extra bits" cut into skinny strips for a border. You could add any greeting or sentiment to this (birthday, miss you, thank you - whatever the occasion calls for!) 5. Mount your three favorites onto some white card for some framed art! I know this was a *MONSTER* post, but I sure had fun and hope you got some good ideas for how to use some of my stamps, and the many ways to use ATC's for different projects. We are all short on time. Our lives are busy, busy, busy. I don't know about you, but creating is good for my soul. It makes me feel better to create . . . even if it's just a little something. Artist Trading Cards (ATC) are a great way to get those creative juices flowing, without a big commitment. The canvas is smaller: 2.5 x 3.5". This small size forces you to really stretch your artistic muscles. And if you "mess up"? No big deal, just grab another blank and try again. I decided to get crafty and try making some ATCs with my Picnic kit. And you know what? It was fun! I trimmed down just two papers (I can always order replacements, wink-wink) and got out my Picnic unmounted stamps and just played. Ink green base with dark green ink for a watermelon rind look. Love that little lady bug! A little masking magic. Stamp glass 2x, trim, layer with dimensional adhesive. Add glitter pen to ice cube and top of glass. Sentiment added from an "old" Mosaic Twist UM. These are just a start. Now that I'm warmed up, I hope to make a few more. Heck, I've got a bunch of blanks left, so why not? You can get a lot of ATC "blanks" from one sheet of paper. Here are the diagrams you can use for either 8.5 x 11 or 12 x 12" papers. To create ten ATC bases, cut 8.5x11" vertically at 6 and 3.5" Rotate 3.5 x 11" horizontally and trim at 10, 7.5, 5 and 2.5". Rotate both 2.5 x 11" horizontally and cut at 10.5, 7 and 3.5". A 12x12 will yield 16 ATC bases, but it will require you to whip out your craft knife. Lynn (Hasmom99) hosts an ATC swap every month on the Club Scrap Forum. Lynn says of the swap, "The creativity and variety are really wonderful. For someone like me, who works full time and rarely has time to make more involved projects, the ATC is a fun way to get a little creative with my stash.
