Ahhhh! I spent WAY too much time hunched over making these little inchies! I wanted to do some more in this pieced together style, and I thought what better theme than tiny little microcosmo-type things. I can't pick a favorite, but I think the most visually appealing one is the hummingbird. The mouse took FOR-EV-ER. Those little limbs are soooo tiny, I had to use tweezers to place them, and don't even get me started on cutting them out. The end result is cute, though. At least I didn't spend all that time for it to turn out like crap, right? :) The mushrooms, much more simple :) I wasn't so sure about the feather, but after looking at it for a little bit, I decided it reminds me of travel, and I like that. Doesn't the background look a little bit like Europe? And the fish, who can go wrong with tiny fish? :) Still plenty of tiny watercolor scraps left! Happy Friday! Have a lovely weekend!

On May 24th our guild put on a Postcard workshop featuring author Bonnie Sabel!!! IT WAS SO FUN!!! That's my card above. I've done several postcards, but Bonnie has a different method for doing them which was awesome to learn!! Her book was available for purchase, which I did of course. She had oodles of kits available for purchase too!!! OH my Goodness!! It was hard to contain myself!!!!! I did buy a few kits to work on, love them!!! Here's Bonnie working with Cathie! My card in progress Lisa's beautiful dragonfly card More cards in the works Everyone busy at work Flo working hard on her postcard, and her lovely card below, gorgeous!!! If you ever have a chance to take a class from Bonnie, do it. She is such a lovely kind person and full of awesome ideas for making postcards from fabric. She loves novelty prints, and now I know what I can do with mine!!! Awesome!!! Click here to find more about Bonnie and her Postcards!!! So here is how I finished my card. I used Sulky variegated thread for the edges. First I do a regular zigzag to hold it all together Then I do a wide, the same as the zigzag, satin stitch. I did this one twice around the whole postcard. Sometimes I will do three layers. It just makes a really nice edge!!! The back ready for address and note and stamp And the front again. Love Frida Kahlo. We saw her work at the the Phoenix Art Museum. I had read up on her before seeing her work, so it was an awesome experience seeing it in real life. WOW!!! Well, that's it for today. Hope you enjoyed the Postcards and information!!! Take Care, Happy Quilting and keep those scissors sharp!! Martha

Received my first ever Dotee Doll from Lisa Ahmad. The doll is such a beauty - I love her figure and blue hair. Sweet smile too, oh, thank you, Lisa! Love the way you sign your doll too :) Brought my 2 girls for a scrapbooking class again last Friday. Each of them did 1 page. This first one was done by Kristine. And this 2nd one done by Joey. Cos' I chanced upon this book, The Art of Embroidered Flowers by Gilda Baron, I'm so inspired to sew. So I have been sewing, lots of surface embriodery on fabric ATCs. And I'm love water-soluable crayons, feel like a real artist painting on the fabric (cos' I never can paint)! How do they look against the photos in the book? These are all I managed so far, pretty time-consuming, but really satisfying! Some of them are works in the process :) To wrap this blog entry up, I attended this Irish Chamber Orchestra (ICO) last night at the Esplanade Concert Hall. This was their debut visit to Singapore. The ICO is critically acclaimed by Ireland's Sunday Tribune as "the best orchestra in the country (Ireland) by far". The ICO was joined by leading Irish accordionist, Dermot Dunne - first time I saw and heard music played from an accordion. The orchestra was made by of string instruments - volin, viola, cello and double bass. Not that I know much about classical music and all these instruments, but I sure enjoyed the night with the mix of celebrated classics and virtuoso pieces from Vivaldi, Mozart and Astor Piazzolla. Personally, I felt that "The Shanghai Set - A Medley of Irish tunes" topped them all!

I left this ledger page larger so that you could size it how you like. If you want it to fit on an 8.5x11 inch paper, then please choose "fit to page" printing or a similar setting. It would print nicely on a piece of legal paper (14 inches long) or a piece of 12x12 paper cut to 12 by 8.5. If you prefer the PDF (sized about 8x 10.5) it's available here: acrobat.com/app.html#d=63n5Ui9GIJ8EC9JgNsKkFQ melstampz.blogspot.com/2011/03/happy-weekend-ledger-freeb...

Recently learned terms: Quilties. Inchies. I don't like them. Cute-ifying things isn't my style. Making miniature quilts, yes. That I understand and have seen some very amazing ones both new and antique. The journal quilts and the postcard quilts, these also I understand and have made many. But why this apparent need to infantilize a craft or art work? Do people think it makes quilting less serious? Less frightening? Does it sound like fun as opposed to a bit of work? Maybe other people have other feelings. It's words and what words imply that bother me. I believe profoundly in the importance and power of words and definitions for what we do. I prickle remembering how the women's movement of the '60s and '70s struggled that women and their work should not be marginalized as unimportant. These words seem a regression that we are sheltering under like wet cats in the rain. BUT I have made what is called a "quiltie" with appliqued raw-edge "inchies". And I love it. I enjoyed arranging the colors, enjoyed using the smallest buttons at the bottom of my button collection as embellishment. And I'm going to go cut out another set of inchies for a second one on the same background fabric and I have plans for a third that will not be inchies but different and larger and I won't call it by any diminutive, I'll call it a little art quilt. These names as I'm using them here are for swaps in which those are the operative words and most of the above is my not at all subtle protest. Confucius said that understanding begins when we have 'rectified names".
