Students love learning about space! Teaching the order of the planets from the sun is such a fun lesson, and students love making this Planet Flipbook. I created this flipbook as a hands-on way for students to learn the order of the planets, but also to pull in some fine motor skills practice. To begin […]

Oh my! I apologize for neglecting my little blog! It's been a while since I've posted. I am taking advantage of having another snow day from school to try and get caught up with my "to do" list which of course has blogging on the top of the list! Last month my students learned about outer space. I wish I had more time to spend on this unit because they loved it! They learned about planets, the sun, the moon, and of course astronauts! My students and I made an astronaut anchor chart. I appreciate Mrs. Williamson for her example: http://mrswilliamsonskinders.blogspot.com/2011/05/space.html. The children made cute astronaut pictures thanks to Kindergarten Nana: http://dbsenk.wordpress.com/2011/05/15/outer-space/ Our unit last week was Friendship/Valentine's Day. We made a chart titled Friends and from that made sentences for our "Shared Reading" time. The students each drew a picture of themselves with a friend. I was so proud of their work! They each cut out a heart and wrote a sentence about friendship and glued them onto their papers. Here are a few examples: Next week I will continue 3rd quarter assessments. It's hard to believe it's almost March! Soon we'll be starting to get ready for Kindergarten Graduation! ~ Lisa

Another "planets" worksheet for my son. This one is aimed to introduce/revise comparative/superlative. There are some sentences for each planet on the first page, with adjectives in different forms underlined. First the students have to complete a table with the underlined words, this way they get to recognize the pattern. Then there is a simplified explanation, followed by an exercise to practise. It worked wonders with my son, now he´s able to recognize comparative/superlative structures even if he doesn´t know the word. I hope you like it!You can find here the other worksheets from the set :https://en.islcollective.com/mypage/resources?Tags=planets&type=Printables&searchworksheet=GO&view=gridMore to come :) - ESL worksheets
Let your students pretend they are astronauts with this creative “I Am an Astronaut!” worksheet. On the first page, students can draw their own faces in the astronaut suit. On the second page, titled “Is There Anybody Out There?”, students are asked to imagine alien life, and draw a picture of an alien in the space provided. Page dimensions: 7.5”x10”. Terms of Use - For personal and educational purposes only. PDF format.

OK...the last of the 3 birthdays in a row is done! Robbie's 5th birthday party was an astronaut space party...so here is your photo journey! INVITATIONS: the boys each received a box instead of just a card (boxes courtesy of USPS priority) Here was the invitation folder... and invitation. (I used the font "neuropol." Looked so spacey!) Under their invitations, they received their official uniform (I told you I was going to love printable iron-ons) they also got a little "preflight energy food" (starburst) DECORATIONS: Of course I couldnt have had a party without a birthday banner...thanks again cricut! Chinese Lanterns! I had to order more after Jane's party. I kept trying to figure out what would look like planets, and beside paper maiche, silver lanterns were the easy way to go! So, I kept the red ones up, added a ton of silver ones in different sizes and 5 small blue ones with NASA on them. This may have messed up the look of the party, but I really wanted cute cookies on a stick. I will be the first to admit that I am NOT a cookie decorator. So, these were everywhere...maybe not super professional looking...but YUMMY!!! Ill post the recipes I used soon. ACTIVITIES: LEVEL 0: Shuttle Orientation As the kids arrived, I had them color space shuttles that had all the parts labeled. LEVEL 1: Rocket Launch If you have kids, and dont have one of these, I would order one RIGHT NOW! They are So fun, and work really well. The boys at the party loved it, and my daughter played with it the whole next day! (its called the ultra stomp rocket) LEVEL 2: Shuttle Repair The boys wore kitchen gloves and had to screw big nuts and bolts together underwater to give them the feel of big gloves in space! LEVEL 3: Collect Moon Rocks I scattered moon rocks all around the yard (kind of like an egg hunt) and let them search for them and add them to their official moon rock pouch. again, loving iron ons and canvas bags from the craft store. The rocks were quite a process. We started by spraying them green, but they were too transparent, so then we primed them and then put 2 more coats of green. In the end, they were EXACTLY what I was going for and the boys LOVED them! LEVEL 4: Tranquilize Aliens OK, we had to throw this in for the boys. We put these laminated cutouts of aliens on the wall and let the boys use a variety of nerf shooters to get them. (aliens thanks to the cricut...again) LEVEL 5: Antigravity Balance it wouldnt be a space party without a little balancing (jumping) on an air mattress. We let them balance a bouncy ball on a plate as they walked across. And then they basically just played on it! UNIFORMS: Rob wore painters coveralls that worked out great...dont try to iron directly on to it, because it melts! So I ironed the nasa symbol and the "trainer rex" label on to paper and pinned them on. I think the boys loved their shirts. I used the nasa symbol and then added the "astronaut training part" to it. the part they loved the best was their names on the back! Space Ranger ROBBIE! FOOD: Well, what can I say...Nasa waters, Mars Mud, Jupiter Jello, and PLANET PIZZA! I went kind of easy on food! CAKE: I couldnt get the idea out of my head...a hanging moon cake! So, I went to home depot, got some hardware, and then Rob and I worked on it the night before...so here it is! The boys thought it was pretty cool that the CAKE was hanging over the table! We let Robbie blow out the candles while it was still hanging... and Rob even cut all the pieces for the boys while it was still hanging! FAVORS: More iron ons! I personalized the bags just like their shirts. They started with Astronaut Ice Cream, Moon Sand, and water... but by the time the boys left they were stuffed full with moon rock bags, kitchen gloves, nuts and bolts, extra food (for the boys who didnt finish) and of course a space ship cookie. We also presented them with their Certificates of Completion, that told them thank you for coming and being part of our launch crew!

If the Milky Way Galaxy is just one of billions of galaxies in outer space, it stands to reason that there are probably other planets out there somewhere just waiting to be discovered. Based on that notion, and my chiropractor’s account of this amazing craft her daughter did at the library’s story time, my son made his own planet. Supplies: Styrofoam ball Old CD Toothpick Glue (white school glue; hot glue is optional) Paint, glitter, etc. Instructions: I cut the ball in half and gave my son some acrylic paints to decorate the two halves. Then I inserted a toothpick in the center of one ball and had my son thread the CD through. Next, I added some hot glue and then topped the toothpick with the second half of the ball. All that was left to do was hand over some white glue and glitter. Once we had glue and glitter everywhere, our ringed planet was complete. Now it was time to write about our new “discovery.” I created a short book with fill-in-the-blank sentences so my son could describe his planet. Download the “If I discovered a new planet …” book I made for free here. Once we’d finished writing about (and drawing) the very cold and sometimes invisible “Planet Laser Gun,” I read my son an amazing National Geographic Kids book. When I say amazing, I mean it. A lot of the books at our library were WAY too detailed and scientific for my son’s understanding. Becky Baines’ Every Planet Has a Place: A Book about Our Solar System provides text that is basic, but informative. The combination of real pictures with doodle-like art keeps the heavy subject-matter playful, too. It is a wonderful introduction for kindergarteners and first graders; check it out!
Wax paper is so versatile - and we're not even talking about all its uses in the kitchen. Wax paper crafts are what we're celebrating - from gifts to home décor to frame-worthy art projects. It's wonderfully inexpensive, beautifully transparent, delightfully smooth and melty...whether you're making wax paper crafts for your kids or for yourself, you will love trying each and every one of these eight great project ideas. whipperberry.com Elegant BowsYou just can't go wrong with neutrals - in home décor, fashion and gift wrap, too. Plain wax paper totally lights up a plain brown wrapper when it's cut into these gorgeous blooming bows - the process is similar to making tissue paper flowers. Heather at Whipperberry shares other great ideas for simple yet elegant gift wrap, too. viewfromthefridge.com Suncatcher MobileThis kid-friendly wax paper craft has been around forever - but melting crayons into beautifully unpredictable color patterns never gets old. Katie at View From the Fridge shares her take on this melt-art process and creates a lovely view from her window in the sunlight. ellaclaireinspired.com Rub-on Transfers Kristen from Ella Claire Inspired shows how quick and easy it is to turn your favorite images into rub-ons with wax paper. How adorable are these botanical prints on wood slices? Now you have a great reason to go outside and trim back that big tree branch. Becky Shander Sweetheart NotesGive your sweetheart a message any time of year. Becky upcycled wax paper cereal bags and sandwiched a note and some ephemera between two heart shapes with stitching. Her hearts look great as part of a banner, and they'd also make such a cute alternative to a greeting card or gift tag! decoradventures.com Faux Capiz Shell ChandelierThis wax paper chandelier makes a big statement in any room - and we love how Jessica from Decor Adventures upcycled an old planter basket for the armature. This project will take some time and patience to complete, but the end result is stunning - totally worth it! OnceWed.com Wax Paper Lanterns These lanterns from Once Wed are a gorgeous way to show off pressed flowers and pretty leaves. You could trap your favorite images or bits of glitter or confetti between two sheets of wax paper, too. Handmade luminaries are sweet on the coffee table or they'd be striking as part of your centerpieces for a big dinner party or a wedding reception. housingaforest.com Wax Paper Resist This technique shared from Housing a Forest will appeal to all the mixed media artists out there - wax is a commonly used for creating resist patterns on paper and fabric. But how cool is this random texture you can get by ironing a wrinkled piece of wax paper to your blank surface? After your surface has cooled, apply color with ink pads or ink mist sprays for a fantastic background. Lisa Fulmer Postcard Art Wax paper is nice and smooth, so it's perfect for painting with alcohol inks. Try Lisa's idea on the Bella Crafts blog for layering and marbling different colors of inks to create colorful abstract art on wax paper to fit inside standard postcard frames.

As you already know from Little Brother's Construction Birthday party last month, we love themes for our birthday parties. When Big Brother asked for an Astronaut Outer Space Party I knew there were a lot of fun ideas we could use for that theme. This was Big Brother's first "friend party" instead of a family party and it was really exciting for both of us to put together projects and games for a group of kids. We wound up with a bigger group than we originally expected but it all went really well! To begin with I again made an invitation using free cilp art from the internet. An edited copy is below. As we were expecting both kids and their parents I decided to keep the food simple and not "on theme." We served up finger sandwiches (pb & jelly, cucumber, and cream cheese & raisin bread) as well as stuff for grown ups to make bulkies and grinders. We also put out fruit, veggie, and cheese & cracker platters. Daddy made a batch of his special snack mix too. Our cake idea came from Pinterest and was again made with the help of my mom. The cake is her delicious chocolate sour cream cake baked in a bowl to make it round like the moon. We frosted it with a homemade oreo buttercream frosting and added both regular and mini cookies to look like craters. We added a couple of astronauts from the pack we had purchased for party activities. Another fun Pinterest find were these Martian Marshmallow pops. I used green candy melts, candy eyes, marshmallows, large lollipop sticks, and green sprinkles to create these cute treats. Activity planning was especially fun! We made a double batch of moon sand from a great recipe at Imagination Tree and added more of the rest of the astronauts. We created fun, toilet paper roll rockets. We wrapped the rolls in construction paper and used holographic tape and star stickers from the dollar store to decorate the sides. The roof is made by cutting a small circle out with a slit partway through the circle. One edge of the slit is glued on top of the other edge to make a cone shape and then glued to the top of the rocket. Kids worked on creating "space helmets" from brown paper bags with glitter glue, sequins, pom poms, and other goodies. Rather than buy a large set of paper bags, I asked our local grocery store to sell me a handful for 20¢ a bag. A final project involved using foam space stickers and metallic crayons on black construction paper to create galaxy pictures. A huge highlight of the party was the cardboard rocket ship we made from a washing machine box. Daddy and Big Brother primed it white and spray painted the roof silver. Kids of all ages loved playing inside the box. A couple of other activities included a "launch pad" toss using our bean bag toss game created last year and a small book nook with many different space and planet themed books. And when the crowd got a little rowdy we pulled out some of our gross motor toys (tunnel, cones, balls) and ran an astronaut "training camp" obstacle type course. When kids finished they got an official "NASA" badge made with clip art, the laminator, and stick on pins. Post Update: Due to many requests we've put together a new "Astronaut Training Checklist" so that others can enjoy the checklist too! Click here for the free printable. As kids were taking home several handmade projects, we kept the favors small and each child took home a flying foam rocket ship and a glow stick. We ended the party with traditional cake and ice cream, and of course one happy kiddo with thoughts of rocket ships headed up!
