For his 5th birthday party, Peter went with an Astronaut theme. Hannah and Will painted and assembled the solar system for the table. Isn't it nice how you can tailor homeschooling to fit with your party planning? : ) We had over a bunch of great friends (and their great parents). (Poor Hannah felt terrible and spent most of the evening upstairs. Thankfully, she was better this morning.) There was a lot of silliness... ... and some intense pinata beating. I love Caden's determination in this picture. All the candles lit as we fired-up the space shuttle made it very exciting. Not recommended. Peter is more excited about me letting him have root beer than about cake.

Last week, I shared the Star Cut-Out Cupcakes that I made for Firecracker's class for her birthday. Normally I would have made the same ones for her birthday party (She asked for a Space theme.)...but I thought of these Constellation cupcakes first and loved the idea. Firecracker had originally asked for a planets/solar system themed cake and the thought of trying to make all those colors of frosting and swirls made me feel tired. (I pinned quite a few different solar system cakes/cupcakes on my Cakes and Parties Pinterest Board if you're interested, though.) Then when I thought of these constellation cupcakes, they'd be a perfect (and easy!) fit for her party. (I'll be sharing the rest of the party snacks in a few days, so be sure to check back.) When I thought of the Star Cut-Out Cupcakes later, I wanted to try both. (You know I have a hard time turning down an easy cupcake idea.) Anyway, since I was able to use the same frosting for both sets of cupcakes, it really wasn't any harder to decorate these a little differently. In truth, these were actually faster per cupcake to frost...but there are several reasons why I think those Star Cut-Out Cupcakes are especially good for a group of school kids...you'll have to go to that post to see why. Anyway...I didn't take process pictures of these because it was already sometime around 1 am...and I needed to get to bed. It's super simple though, so I'll talk you through it. You start with making your frosting. For the night sky, I was originally going to use black. The chocolate frosting I made tasted delicious, but looked horrible after I tried coloring it black, so we used that for graham cracker's instead. I started over with regular butter cream frosting. I colored a bit of it yellow and the majority of it blue. To get this nice night sky color, I used approx. 2 parts Wilton Sky Blue and 1 part Wilton Purple to get this color. I used a large-ish open star tip to pipe the blue frosting onto the cupcake. (I used a 1M Wilton tip, but the exact size really doesn't matter...and you could use a different size or shape tip just as easily.) You basically frost it as if you were making a "rose cupcake." You start in the middle and swirl around until the cupcake is full. (There's a video at this link for how to do that if you're not sure.) Then I used some of these simplified constellations as a reference for putting the stars on with a small star tip. The kids loved them and had fun figuring out which constellation they had. Last month, MJ turned three...which is a big deal to me, because I've always seen three as the bridge from babyhood into real, legit childhood. And now that it's here, I believe it even more. The last little bit of chubby in MJ's cheeks is slowly melting away. His wobbly toddle-gait has given way to a confident, rough and tumble run. And he's outgrown much of the baby talk and funny mispronounced words. He even wiped away a kiss the other day! Yup. He's my big boy now. And I think that deserves a stellar celebration. A galactic get-together. A party of planetary proportions. Are you sensing the theme yet? If you guessed an outer space bash, give yourself a pat on the back! Welcome to MJ's Outta This World Birthday Party! I made this welcome wreath from a dryer duct. :) As soon as the guests arrived, jet packs were waiting for the kids. Aren't they cute? They're just soda bottles spray painted and hot glued together with tissue paper strips as flames. Easy peasy. And oh-so-much fun! Once inside, there were lots of fun activities for our little astronauts. There was a Flying Saucer Creation Station. It was just paper plates stapled together with crayons and stickers to decorate. Next to that was Cosmic Coloring. I printed out free images of rocket ships and astronauts and let the kids go to town. Isn't my niece the most adorable artist ever? There was also an Asteroid Dig. Kids searched through packing peanuts (leftover from MJ's birthday last year!) to find little UFOs and aliens. Next stop, Space Slime. Originally we'd made the glitter slime recipe you can find all over Pinterest, but it got sticky really quickly. So, by the time I took the photo, we'd swapped it out for foam clay. Less sticky all over our house. ;) Last up was my favorite indoor activity: The Star Cave. It's just a tall box (like a wardrobe box) with holes poked in top and Christmas lights inserted. I cut an opening at the bottom so the astronauts could climb in and look up at the "stars". Isn't it pretty? Here they go! I also included a variety of glow-in-the-dark star wands and wristbands to take into the cave. They were all from the Dollar Store and made great takeaway toys. And because we live in California, where 9 out of 12 months are decent weather, we included lots of outdoor fun for the kids. Like the Zero Gravity Booth! It was a BIG hit! There were also Planets to Bounce and Kick (AKA rubber balls from the Dollar Store). I also created a Rocket Ship Photo Booth. I LOVED making this thing. It was way easier than it looked and I'll post a tutorial later. Look at this cute little rocket man! It was so much fun watching the kids run around and enjoy their rocket packs, the games, and all the fun. Even the grownups got into it! Now with all of that fun, we needed fuel to keep us going! Luckily, we had plenty of space snacks and rocket fuel on hand. The Hydration Station had Liquid Astro Fuel (water), Milky Way Drinks, and juice for the kids in these adorable little rocket sippy cups I found at Oriental Trading Company. Liquid Astro Fuel Milky Way Drinks Ok, ok, so the grown ups loved the sippy cups, too. But I don't think his had apple juice..... ;) Here are the Space Snacks! I found clear plastic containers in the colors of the party at the Dollar Store to hold the snacks and added a few containers I found online. For the centerpiece, I wrapped a painted crate with chevron ribbon, and placed a bowl of "UFO's" (candy in vending machine containers) and surrounded it with test tubes full of "space protons" (Sixlet candies). A silver plastic tablecloth and a star "chandelier" topped it off. To eat we had Space Spuds (aka potato chips). I put them in these super cute fry holders and attached party circles from the printables I bought on Etsy. We also had Galactic Grapes.... And make-your-own Crater Crunch, with cute little takeout boxes to hold it. The mix consisted of Saturn's Rings (Cheerios), Meteorites (peanut butter filled pretzel bites), and Asteroids (Coco Puffs). There was also Planetary Pizza....(Grandpa and Uncle made the pepperoni into a rocket shape and used extra cheese to make flames. They're so cool!) ....Stellar Stacks (PB&J sandwiches cut into star shapes).... ...and Rocket Dogs. These were so popular! Not one was left!!! They were just skewered hot dogs wrapped in the dough for a crescent roll (like Pillsbury) and baked for 15 minutes in the oven. Add a foil cupcake holder on the end of the skewer to make the bottom of the "rocket". And watch them disappear....rapidly. :) Next to each dish I put a little menu card. I used styrofoam balls that were already halved (I found them in a bag of 6 at Hobby Lobby) and surrounded them with more Sixlet candies secured with hot glue. I love how they kinda look like little planets with a candy ring! But perhaps my favorite part of the party was the yummy dessert table. I really love how it turned out. We had Candy Comets (rock candy) sitting in glasses of more protons, Rocket Pops (push pops with yummy cake and icing!) and Moon Rocks (chocolate candy covered with nonpareils). My friend at Hot Mama's Cakes has been making birthday cakes for MJ since he had his first. Her cakes are absolutely delicious - even the fondant frosting is yummy. And, they're totally adorable! Just look at this sugary masterpiece! Here's a close up look. The alien and rocket cutouts matched the printables I purchased on Etsy. And I got such a kick out of the craters on the moon! It's the little details.... Before they left, each guest got to take home one of these favor bags. Each was packed with the rocket sunglasses you saw earlier, rocket bubbles, a bouncy "planet" ball, an outer space pencil, and a rocket candy ring. When it was all over, the kids were happy and the birthday boy was playing away with all of his new treasures. And Daddy looked like this. And that's the sign of a good party if you ask me!
