Gorgeous Quaking Aspen Tree Fast-Growing Native Plant Wonderful Heart-Shaped Leaves Useful Pyramidal Shape Beautiful Fall Color Adds Motion & Sound Historical Uses Beneficial To Wildlife Long-Lived Cold Hardy Nativer Distinctive White Bark Quaking Aspen trees (Populus tremuloides) are gorgeous, fast-growing native trees distributed over most of North America, including the United States and Canada. You may have seen and loved them in National Forests throughout the Rocky Mountains. They are a pioneering species of trees that are one of the first trees to invade open areas and prairies. There is nothing like hearing the wind rustling through a group of Aspen trees on a summer day. One of the most endearing features of Quaking Aspen is that their heart-shaped leaves quake and flutter back and forth with the slightest breeze, making a soft sound like rain. The sounds of the leaves blowing through a native stand of Aspen has been admired and memorialized by poets and writers alike. Distinctive Leaves and Lovely Fall Color Quaking Aspen grow tall and somewhat pyramidal in their outline when young and may be mistaken for Birch. As these trees age, they can develop a more rounded form. Aspen have heart-shaped leaves that are dark green on top and a lighter color on the underside. The long petioles cause the shiny leaves to easily wave in the breeze, setting the entire tree alight and rustle, giving your landscape a soothing sound, giving them the common name Trembling Aspens. The Quaking Aspen is a deciduous tree and will lose its beautiful leaves in fall. In the fall, the Aspen leaves color turns an incredibly clear yellow color. While yellow is the most typical fall color you'll see, native stands can exhibit some orange and even pockets of red. It's vibrant in the landscape and makes a big statement. The bark on young Aspen trees may not show the classic light color, but once they hit a couple of inches in width (or caliper), they turn a lovely chalky greenish-white color. The beautiful smooth, white bark from Quaking Aspen trees was used by pioneers and American Indians for medicinal purposes. How To Use Quaking Aspen Trees in Your Landscape Quaking Aspen can be used as a specimen tree in a lawn area where it can easily be maintained. Or you can plant Aspen trees mixed in clumps and single stem plants in natural groups. Thriving in USDA hardiness zones 2 through 6, these lovely shade trees do great in a wide range of soil types and are very cold hardy and don’t mind higher elevations of Colorado and harsh winters of the midwest! Use Quaking Aspens to create a sense of enclosure without feeling like you live in a fortress. Create a respite from the modern world with a loose, zig-zagging row of several of these trees. Pro tip? Leave enough space when planting to wind a mulched nature trail between them. Plant them in a gentle curve around an out-of-the-way spot in your backyard. What a magical, private place to put a hammock. Aspens also make incredible vistas or views from your deck or patio. Nature can be brought home and enjoyed to the fullest with wonderful native trees like this one. Try your hand at landscaping to gift yourself a real sense of peace on your property. Hurry and find your Quaking Aspen trees for sale today! Long-Lived Wildlife Tree Aspen trees are also an excellent tree species for wildlife habitats in full sun. Like Northern Red Oaks, these keystone species attract ruffled grouse feed on the catkins and buds, and elk and deer feed on the leaves in fall and winter. Butterflies, moths and caterpillars also feed on the leaves. These adaptable trees love a rich, humusy soil that is consistently moist, but they grow naturally in dry and rocky soils in the Rocky Mountains where usually only Deodar Cedar trees and conifers. Their tolerance of soil types is one of the reasons this tree is so widely distributed. Sometimes forming root suckers and root sprouts that create their own groves and colonies. You can easily prune these off or just mow around them a couple of times a year to remove these should they form. Aspen can be very successfully incorporated into today's more natural landscapes where they can support plenty of wildlife. We sell out of this beautiful native tree. If it's in stock, please place your order today! Frequently Asked Questions How to Grow a Quaking Aspen Tree? Quaking Aspen are easy-care trees that need full sun and well-drained soil. Combining cutting-edge neuroscience with the latest discoveries on the human microbiome, a practical guide in the tradition of The Second Brain, and The Good Gut that conclusively demonstrates the inextricable, biological link between mind and the digestive system. We have all experienced the connection between our mind and our gut--the decision we made because it "felt right"; the butterflies in our stomach before a big meeting; the anxious stomach rumbling we get when we're stressed out. While the dialogue between the gut and the brain has been recognized by ancient healing traditions, including Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine, Western medicine has by and large failed to appreciate the complexity of how the brain, gut, and more recently, the gut microbiota--the microorganisms that live inside our digestive tract--communicate with one another. In The Mind-Gut Connection, Dr. Emeran Mayer, professor of medicine and executive director of the UCLA Center for Neurobiology of Stress, offers a revolutionary and provocative look at this developing science, teaching us how to harness the power of the mind-gut connection to take charge of our health and listen to the innate wisdom of our bodies. The Mind-Gut Connection describes: - Why consuming a predominantly plant-based diet is key for gut and brain health- The importance of early childhood in gut-brain development, and what parents can do to help their children thriveThe role of excessive stress and anxiety in GI ailments and cognitive disordersHow to "listen to your gut" and pay attention to the signals your body is sending you- and much more.Binding Type: HardcoverAuthor: Emeran MayerPublisher: Harper WavePublished: 07/05/2016ISBN: 9780062376558Pages: 320Weight: 1.10lbsSize: 9.10h x 6.10w x 1.40dReview Citations: Booklist 07/01/2016 pg. 10

I was inspired by our chance of a snow day and only had a few days left with students. We wanted to get some kind of painting completed and I love doing things with the extra magazines and muddled newspapers in my room. I took the "Aspen Tree" project in a new direction. Let me know what you think. We did have a snow day, and the project was simplified (We didn't add any extra branches or extra snow banks.) Lesson plan took approximately 4-5 days. We painted newspaper with watercolor to create the blue background. Students made a collage using white and/or light blue pages in a magazine and modge podged to create the snow bank and torn newspaper background.
