I have been crazy busy the last few weeks and today was no different. After I helped get Nikki and Zach's kids to school today, I came home and started working right away. My mind was racing and I couldn't concentrate on one thing at a time so I knew that I needed to step away and regroup. What better way to do that than sew? I threw this up on the design wall Tuesday night, knowing that I wouldn't have an opportunity to work on it for at least a week. I really just wanted to see if my fabrics would play together nicely, and I think they do. This quilt is the center of the Labyrinth Quilt by Debbie Maddy. My friend Eillen wants to use a variation of this pattern for a Quilt of Valor and I told her that I'd help adjust the pattern. On Monday, we pulled some fabric, made some changes, and decided what we needed. I wanted to review my math and sketches so I decided to use real fabric to do that. I think everything will work and I look forward to completing this quilt. I'm going to sew a couple of rows together right now and then head back to work. That should settle me down a bit and get me back on track.

In 2012 I embarked on a mission to make a Sashiko Quilt and this was the result: Sashiko Quilt Sashiko detail Why did I decide to make a Sashiko quilt? There were three reasons: 1. I saw the lovely shiny Japanese fabrics stacked up my local quilt shop and thought, "aren't those lovely!". 2. We were about to have a Japanese exchange come and stay with us for three weeks, and later in the year my son would be going to Japan for three weeks. 3. I thought it would be fun to experiment with the hand stitching on the dark panels. Sashiko Quilt I didn't realise how mathmatically challenging it would be, but I am an accountant, so I just pulled out my calculator and graph paper and managed just fine. Here's how I went about making my sashiko quilt: - I chose a simple pattern with quite big squares for the shiny Japanese fabrics, so I could still see them easily in the finished quilt. I chose a range of the dark indigo fabrics. - I started to piece the quilt into sections of about 12 blocks. Each of the individual blocks measures 8.75" x 8.75" when finished. I knew I wanted to do the sashiko before the whole quilt was pieced together, but I also knew that the dark indigo blocks needed to be pieced before I did the sashiko so I could stitch to the very edges of them. - I used library books and the internet to research sashiko patterns. I found lots of designs that I liked, but I had to scale them to fit my blocks. Some of the sashiko patterns I used in my quilt Navy blocks are 8.75" x 8.75" finished - I used tailor's chalk to draw grids on the dark indigo squares to map out where the designs would sit. - I went over the chalk marks with the sewing machine because they were rubbing off too easily. - I hand stitched the Sashiko patterns between the grid lines with Ecru DMC Perle 8. (Sashiko thread is expensive in New Zealand and I knew I would need alot.) - I pulled out all of the grid lines I'd made with machine stitching. - Once all of the hand stitching was done, I joined all the sections together and formed the quilt. - I had quilted simple grid lines and diagonal lines through the shiny blocks and left the sashiko blocks as they were. I didn't want to distract from the sashiko stitching. The quilt on our bed The backing, and label of course! I'm really pleased with how this quilt turned out. It has wool batting in it so is my warmest quilt and we use it in the winter. The facts: Each of the navy blocks measures 8.75" x 8.75" finished. I used ecru Perle 8 for the sashiko stitching. I did all of the sashiko before I made the quilt sandwich. The quilt has wool batting. The finished quilt measures 62" x 80".

Almost every quilt magazine or book published in Japan include instructions for a bag, and you can always spot a number of patchwork bags carried around at the show. This is therefore a popular category of the quilt contest. Taupe bags by 赤平昭子 Kazuko Akahira Colourful bag by 飯田奈緒美 Naomi Iida Dogs also made their appearance on the bags, these three won the quilter a ribbon. 横山幸美 Yukimi Yokoyama This was not found on a bag but on another popular category, wearable quilts: Made by Kim Su Jin (Korea) May I present the Best in Show? A pink Mt Fuji can be seen peeping through a mass of clouds. My guess is that the clouds are made up of cotton fabric for summer kimonos, aka yukata. 吉田寿恵 Kotoe Yoshida The winning quilt among the Traditional quilts was this red jewel in machine quilting. Who wouldn't want to have such a quilt as a bedcover in December? 池敬子 Keiko Ike A prize was also awarded to this Korean quilter The beautiful machine quilting/embroidery made this quilt look almost like a gigantic photograph. Chang Mi Sun (Korea) This quilt was made by 16 high school students - and maybe their teacher? As you can see Mt Fuji is popular with everyone, and cherry blossoms, and cats, and green tea ... These towers are not as high as Mt Fuji but cleverly made out of string and fusable web! 竹脇章子 Akiko Takewaki This quilt was also in the Contemporary category, and made out of unusual material, too - woven rags of indigo. 杉山美紀江 Mikie Sugiyama If there had been a Visitors' Choice, this stunning quilt would have got a high score. There were always crowds of people enjoying the beautiful sky and marvelling at the use of material. 島田清子 Kiyoko Shimada Like this man, I needed some time to see the 'point' of this quilt, called New York. The 'point' is of course that you can make a quilt of something you see every day as you open the door of your apartment. Kimono Quilt done ! Quilted with Glide Military Gold for the bamboo design in the sashing and the cornerstones. Sew Fine 402, a creamy thread for the echoing and invisible thread for all the stitch in the ditch around the kimonos themselves. Wool batt. This quilted up beautifully and the gold thread really picks up the threads in all the kimono fabrics. It really sparkles! Next is a huge batik...better start loading it.
