You need: drawing sheet A2 size black strips 1,5 cm wide colored construction paper in red, yellow and blue ruler scissors glue black marker This is a teamwork lesson for two students. Draw squares and rectangles of various sizes on the colored paper. Make sure they are straight: start from a right angle and measure carefully. Cut the squares and rectangles and spread them on the white sheet. Make sure same colors do not touch each other and stick them. Continue with the black strips. Decide by yourself how many strips and where you want them, but there are four requirements: the strips must be sticked straight! (use your ruler) black strips must be sticked around all colored area's use the black strips to create white area's (squares and rectangles) don't use to much glue. Let some strips stay loose so you can put a Haring figure behind it Draw three or more Keith Haring characters on the colored paper. Cut them and paste them on the Mondriaan sheet. Be sure there is no yellow character on a yellow area. Outline the characters with a black marker and draw some 'move stripes' around them.

Welcome back! It's been a minute (okay, several) since I last blogged and while I missed you all dearly, you guys: I needed a break! In all truth and honesty...a couple things have been going around here on the homefront that have kept me away. First of all, I'm just not feeling it this year. There, I have said it. I've actually said it quite a bit here. And I know this is normal, a season in the art teacherin' life, it's still frustrating. I'm not hopping out of bed with excitement about the day ahead. Sure I can fake it but...I know that it's not my normal, you know? I do think a large project I'm working on has been a contributing factor. I've worked on big projects while teaching before ('member this book?) But this new thing it's, well, bigger and unlike anything I've tried. So other things are starting to slide. Blogging and being completely present and excited in the art room. BUT Y'ALL DIDN'T COME HERE FOR ALL THIS, did you? Sorry, not sorry. We all need to overshare sometimes and you just happened to be a good listener. Thank you Now, let's talk about projects that are perfect for this time of year: Valentines Day-ish lessons! Be sure and click on all the following links as MANY of them have videos for you to share in your art room with your students. Here we go: Romero Britto-Inspired First Grade Hearts this lesson was a huge hit with my students and involved line and pattern review as well as some fun color exploration with tissue paper and paint sticks! Heart Prints with Kindergarten was such a fun way to share printmaking with kindergarten in a way where each student was successful! Foil Relief Heart from Kindergarten Printing Plate this was a fun way to do a cool project with our leftover printing plates. Kindergarten then painted the background in a rainbow review. Robert Indiana Love Prints by First and Second Grade my kids love printmaking. We explored making a ton of prints on styrofoam plates before adding the paper letters on top. Chris Uphues-Inspired Project for All Grades You'll definitely want to check this lesson out, it's perfect for a sub, comes with a video and free handouts! James Goldcrown Hearts for All Another easy lesson and a quick one too...and one that introduces a contemporary artist. Win-win-WIN! First Grade Woven Hearts with Stitched Edge We just finished up weaving in my art room and we just might be doing this next. This Our School Has Heart mural is a blog post with so many ideas! One for each grade level, be sure and check it out! Valentine Animals for All my kids loved this project and I'm sure yours will too. All the videos and details here! A Contemporary Artist Review! This one was one I did with my older students and it was a blast. We learned about four contemporary artists who use hearts in their work. Video included! But wait, there's more! So many more Valentine's lesson ideas here. Hope you enjoy!
This week has been just great! I decided to stay at Ross Elementary as a part time art teacher and intervention teacher. :0) Last week we looked and remembered how we were all artists using inspiration from the dot. This week in art we are studying our face and we made a sketchbook today! This year will have a lot of writing! After being trained in dibels yesterday, I have an appreciation of what classroom teachers are responsible for teaching students. I encourage every art/related arts teacher to collaborate with their grade levels. I hope your year has started off on the right foot! Nature's beauty to start of the Monday morning. The day was just awesome! Free stuff to start of a Tuesday morning :0) A work from Friday classes last week Pinterest tryout Welcome Back! Sketchbook Ideas A must do every year! Tape a large paper to the table and when Kinders finish with their project, they have something to keep them busy! One table, as you can see...loved it a little too much but hey that's what art is for...experimenting!!! Sketchbooks were made by K-4 today and they loved it. I had a pre-assessment of them drawing a portrait, then we filled in a template, and next week they will draw a self-portrait :0) A big thank you to my dad who drilled holes in 3 reams of paper, which was over in 5 minutes. I suggest a drill press over a hole punch. My goal is to use what I have in the room this year.
The 2nd Grade students studied the artist Vincent Van Gogh and his artwork. We also read the book, Camille and the Sunflowers. The students were able to create a giant sunflower creating emphasis in their artwork. Then they were shown how to blend colors using oil pastels. The students had to choose a cool color for their background to make their sunflower "pop" in their piece of art.
The floorplan was quirky, but the location was postcard perfect. So, this Marin couple moved in with plans for an extensive remodel.
Many of you probably know of Ian and Melissa from Apex High School. They have developed a list of Artistic Behaviors for the high school level. I have been following along and seeing how they teach their students. Seeing their list gave me the idea to create posters that shows kids what artists do and what exactly is an artist. I decided to simplify the behaviors for elementary school students and start from the basics. Start from the ground and … Read more... →
Kindergarten artists read the book inspired by Paul Klee called, "The Cat and the Bird." We also looked at the images in the Paul Clay's book entitled, "Animal Tricks." We talked about the art elements of line and shape and used to them to create our own Paul Klee inspired cats. We also reviewed the art elements of shapes, lines and colors. We used shapes to draw the cats, lines to create a line pattern, and cool colors to use in the background. We used cool colors to create line patterns in the background. We reviewed warm and cool colors by putting images with these colors into a Venn Diagram on the board. We like to write our learning goal on the back of our artworks to share with our parents what we were learning about when we take our artwork home. Learning Goals; I can recognize some of Paul Klee's artwork. I can use lines to create a line pattern. I can find shapes in an artwork. I can separate warm colored markers from cold colored markers. I can create my own Klee inspired cat.
