Fernando Botero (geb. 1932 in Medellin, Kolumbien) erlebte sein Erweckungserlebnis 1956 in Mexiko. Als der gebürtige Kolumbianer beim Malen einer Mandoline entdeckte, welche Wirkung es hat, wenn er das Schallloch in Relation zum Korpus viel zu klein anlegt, war der „Boterismo“ geboren. So rundlich, drall und üppig, wie ihm die Mandoline geraten war, wurde nun alles, was Botero malte, Menschen, Tiere, Blumen, Vasen, und Rubens’sche Formen bekamen auch die Skulpturen, denen er sich später in seiner Karriere zuwandte. In Boteros Werk verschmelzen Einflüsse, die von präkolumbianischer Keramik und lateinamerikanischer Volkskunst über die von ihm verehrten alten Meister wie Rubens, Velasquez und Goya und den mexikanischen Muralisten bis zu Picasso und Juan Gris reichen. Oft skurril-humorvoll, kennt Boteros gänzlich unelitäre Kunst aber auch ernste Themen, etwa in der Auseinandersetzung mit der von Militärdiktatur und Drogenkriegen geprägten Geschichte seines Heimatlandes Kolumbien oder seinem Abu-Ghraib-Zyklus, der die Folterpraktiken der USA im Irak aufgreift. Diese Einführung verfolgt Boteros Werdegang von den frühesten Tierkarikaturen bis hin zu seinen mächtigen Bronzeskulpturen, die sich heute an vielen zentralen Orten auf der ganzen Welt finden, an der Park Avenue in New York ebenso wie an der Champs-Élyssées oder auf dem Boat Quay in Singapur.

The lamps in this collection are inspired by Colombia’s equestrian heritage, layered with a jewel-toned color palette that takes inspiration from the works of Colombian artist Fernando Botero. Talabartero translates as ‘master saddler,’ and the collection draws upon the expert craftsmanship and fine detailing—the stitching, the braiding and the hand tooling—that characterize the best of vintage saddles from the area. Each lamp is crafted from natural grain board-formed leather, guided by the same formation techniques as those used in fashioning saddles, with curves reminiscent of the figures in Botero’s paintings. Artist -Fernando Botero -Famous Art Parodies (Critique), 6 pages Fernando Botero was a world renown painter and sculptor from Columbia. (1932-2023) “A figurative painter and sculptor, his style - known throughout the world of art as "Boterismo" - is instantly recognizable for its exuberant and sensuous volumetric form.” (TheArtStory.org) The purpose of these art activities are not to be a biographical study of Fernando Botero’s life and career, but to analyze his art using art elements. He has paid homage to several art masterpieces, which we will critique in this group of activities, according to art elements. However, the titles and artists are purposely left blank, so the students can research themselves. ( Perhaps you can give them computer time, library time, or assign as extra credit) The 4 critiques are: 1. Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa (1503) into Mona Lisa, Age Twelve (1959) 2. Diego Velázquez's Las Meninas (1656) into La Menina (1982). 3. Raphael's La Fornarina (1518-20) into his own La Fornarina (2009) 4. Jan Van Eyck, The Anorlfini Wedding, 1434 into After Van Eyck, (1997) par·o·dy [ˈperədē] NOUN- an imitation of the style of a particular writer, artist, or genre with deliberate exaggeration for comic effect: Instruct the students to find as many examples of the art elements they can and to write them in the blank spaces. The last two art activities are copies of 1) Vermeer’s, The Girl with the Pearl Earring and 2) Gainsborough’s Blue Boy.
