What I see as his late period reveals an artist who knows that change is inevitable, that mortality is hurrying closer, and that art is not a bulwark against time.

The work of American painter Brice Marden is currently showing in a major retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. This is timely, and the 56 paintings and over 50 drawings should bring the work of this outstanding painter permanently to the fore.
His paintings feel very New York, and then very American, and then suddenly like a visitation from the other side of the world. Balancing the tensions of lyricism and minimalism, depth and the surface, medium and form, there is so much to the work of painter Brice Marden—and so much to his life.

Marden, who would often work and rework a painting for years, pushed abstraction in a new direction.
Famous abstract artists: Marden, Twombly, Tapies. What would a modern abstract artist be without studio?. Artist studios are probably key for the devolopement of an artist.

Portrait of the Artist Brice Marden 1984©peter bellamy2010 Here is Brice Marden in the 80s at his fighting weight as fame was beginning to gather momentum; his studio was above the Cocteau Theater on the corner of Bond and Bowery. I walked into his studio and he was standing there in the light like a bobcat caught in his lair ready to strike.
For the artist Brice Marden, drawings can be finished works in their own right

A favorite instagram is gallerist Brett Gorvy's, which pairs an artist and his/her work with a poem. It makes for a powerful dose of illumination. Take this sublime photograph by the great photojournalist Harry Benson*, of a young Brice Marden painting with a long-handled brush, illuminated, as if by fireworks, by a poem by Margaret Atwood. Perfection. Which got us thinking about that amazing brush…

Brice Marden Vintage Exhibition Announcement Published in conjunction with 'Brice Marden Work Books 1964-1995, Kunstmuseum Winterthur, 1997 Measures: 5 x 7 inches (opens to 5 x 14 inches). Very good condition; printed on fine paper with elegant color tones Brice Marden received an MFA from the Yale School of Art and Architecture in 1963. It was at Yale, under the instruction of artists including Alex Katz and Jon Schueler, that Marden arrived at the rectangular format and muted, individualized palette that characterized his early monochromatic panels. Over the course of his career, his work has developed to reveal a range of influences absorbed during his extensive travels. The art and culture of Asia and the light and landscape of Hydra, the Greek island to which he has returned regularly since the 1970s, inform the heightened color and calligraphic gesture that have emerged in subsequent work. Testing the strictures of Minimalism, Marden’s art has reintroduced both the landscape and the figure into abstract painting while affirming his sense of connection with the Abstract Expressionist movement that preceded him
The artist, who passed away this year, finally let go of his desire for control and perfection without surrendering his self-imposed restraints.
