We all know that students who monitor their thinking while reading do better. Therefore it follows that students who monitor their thinking across ALL subject areas will do better in other subjects as well. The problem many students face is knowing how to transition those skills to other subjects. In fact, many don't even know they can! We have to explicitly teach kids to use thinking skills across all subjects. Language of Learning Kids need to know that there is a "language of learning." This is particularly powerful with students who are strugglers, or "our low babies" as we call them at my school. This language includes, but is not limited to: inferring, thinking, determining importance, predicting, questioning, visualizing, schema, purpose, structure, monitoring comprehension, etc. These skills help students dig deeper into metacognition and actively improve their learning. I won't cover the meanings of each of these as I have previously done so on the blog. Actively Using the Language The most important role you play after teaching the skills is to model their use. No matter what subject you are teaching, use the language of learning. Help students find connections (schema) to other content areas. The brain looks for patterns, so encouraging schema helps students move new content into long term memory. Use questioning strategies to help students make inferences, predictions, and determine importance. Make sure you are using the terminology as you teach for the most powerful results. Won't This Take Too Much Time? Ah yes, the time issue. Believe me, I'm right there with you. No it doesn't take a lot of extra time at all. When you are planning, look for places you can utilize the skills in your lesson. However most of your opportunities will arise through active questioning and discussion during the lesson. That's the beauty of this, students will see the application of the skills in real time! Posters To give students a visual connection on bridging the skills from reading to math, I have created a companion poster to my Good Readers poster called the Good Mathematicians poster. This one takes the same skills from the reading poster, but targets them for math. Side by side, these will be a powerful reference for reinforcement! You can make your own posters (I used Swift Publisher 3 on my Mac), or you can download the posters at my TPT store here: Good Mathematicians Poster, Good Reader Poster. Finally I have seen the profoundly positive impact of teaching students to THINK across the curriculum year after year. If you have not yet discovered this amazing tool, I encourage to you begin tomorrow! You will be thrilled with the results.

You love them. You hate them. Your heart burns, and your gut churns in their proximity. Welcome to the world of karmic relationships. One second, you’re laughing, the next, you’re screaming at each other. One minute, you embrace, the next, you swear you could kill them. And yet, despite the ups and downs, you always seem to get pulled back into the sticky honey-like spider web of your relationship with them. We all experience at least one karmic relationship in life – it’s part of our spiritual calling. But the question is, how do we know if a certain spiritual
I've never had any artistic ability. None whatsoever. When in college, I had to take a class called "Art For The Handicapped Child." It was a required course for Special Ed majors. The instructor was an older woman who rarely smiled or had a kind word. We were working with clay, creating animals, I think. She walked by me, stopped and said, "That would be fine if a blind child had done it." Cringe! What I needed was help not criticism. I could not draw or paint or model clay very well but I could paint my world with words, and I did. Unlike most college students, I reveled in writing papers for my classes. I didn't start writing other things for a good many years but I always had the desire to write. I tell young would-be writers today to act upon that desire. Don't let life get in the way as I did. Artists of all kinds--sculptors, painters, musicians, writers--bring so much to our world. Think of the many hours of pleasure you have had when admiring paintings and sculptures in a museum, or at a concert or in reading myriad books. These many artists enrich our lives and soothe our souls. It always saddens me when I see budget cuts needed and the arts is one of the first groups to have funds slashed. Granted, they are not a necessity but they offer so very much. I once wrote a poem that placed in a writing contest that speaks to the part the arts play in our lives., especially writing. Read it and think about how all of these artists have touched your own life and, if you are a writer, how you have made a difference in the lives of readers. All artists speak with a different voice. As writers, ours is with words. Artists All Painting with oils, watercolors brushed across paper, clay molded by loving hands, marble chiseled to exquisite form. Artists ply their trade by the golden light of day, by the velvet depths of night with passion and joy. One more artist joins the ranks. The writer brushes words over paper, molds a story bit by glittering bit, chisels a novel to survive the ages. Life stories are gathered from country roads to city streets, written from the depths of a heart bursting with intensity and rapture. Artists all, masters of creation, be they painters, sculptors or writers, leaving footprints on canvas, marble and paper-- heartfelt tributes embraced by mankind. ---Nancy Julien Kopp

RARE & Fabulous Vintage 1978 Enid Blyton's 'Famous Five Go Adventuring Again' Annual in Hardback. This has BRILLIANT comic strip style stories, short stories and articles and is a great fun read. This book will take you right back to your childhood days and would be a lovely book to share with your children, grandchildren etc. An especially FABULOUS gift for a Famous Five Fan who was born in 1978 or maybe as an unusual Wedding Anniversary Gift. This is in very good condition for a vintage item that has been read and enjoyed and it is 44 years old! There are a few marks/scratches/creases/dents on the covers. The inside pages are really clean and there is a tiny bit of creasing. On the first two inside pages there are a couple of little dents where perhaps the book has been used to lean on for writing. Many thanks for looking and please take a peek at my other items.
