This beautiful Bee tile is inspired by an ancient Greek coin (ca. 380 BCE) honoring Artemis the goddess of fertility. Her temple was located in the city of Ephesus and was one of the Seven Wonders of the World. The high priest of the temple was called the "King Bee" and the virgin priestess were called "Melissae" (honey bees). The ancient Greeks and Romans mistakenly believed that the leader of a beehive was a king and not a queen. The Greek letters "E" and "Phi" stand for the city of Ephesus. It was said that the Athenians who colonized the region were led by the Muses who took the shape of bees to guide them. Size: about 4 1/4 inches square and about 3/8 inches thick. My tiles are frost proof stoneware. They are hand-pressed and hand-glazed and no two are exactly alike. I hope you enjoy displaying them as much as I enjoy making them. The tile shown here is hand painted with my soft green satin glaze. There is a notch on the back for hanging.
Artemis, Goddess of the Moon and Wild Things Artemis is the Goddess of the Hunt, also known as the ‘Lady of the Wild Things’. Strongly associated with night and the moon, Artemis presides over wild animals and nature, hunting, and interestingly enough, childbirth and young children, especially girls—which is how she earned the ancient term ‘The Protectress of Dewy Youth’. Famously disinterested in men and choosing a life of chastity, Artemis preferred to roam the mountains with a band of huntress nymphs and women, slaying wild animals (and occasionally impudent mortals) with her golden bow and arrow. One day, after a successful hunt, Artemis and the huntresses were bathing in the wood when Actaeon, a mortal hunter, spied the goddess and her companions in their nakedness. Rather than brush it off or blame herself, Artemis caught him in the act and made an example of Actaeon by turning him into a stag. Artemis is the perfect talisman for young women, wild women, willful, assertive, and powerful women. Product Details Ethically sourced 1.5mm white diamond 1 inch diameter, 15 grams 18 inch rolo chain
