One of the artist that I have the pleasure to tour often at Vancouver Art Gallery is Victoria, BC artist, Emily Carr. I love everything about her. Carr's personal story of following your heart, feminism, and perseverance are great life lessons to share with students. And as I have gotten to know the volume of her work better, there is so much more to share beyond just her paintings. Although the paintings are spectacular. I could not imagine not sharing Emily Carr with the campers in the "Artist a Day" camp and so this time I focused on abstraction projects inspired by her artwork. We started out using graphite and looking at several examples of her sketches to figure out the variety of ways she abstracted trees. Then each camper explored their own unique way to abstract a tree using graphite. 6yr old 8yr old 8yr old 5yr old 8yr old 9yr old 11yr old We then moved on to charcoal drawings. I showed them a variety of her work on charcoal and my thought was we would continue to explore abstracting a tree, however the campers had other ideas and I will always let children lead the way as to what they will spend their time drawing/painting within a project. And so, yes, a couple of girls continued to explore abstracting a tree. 5 year old 8 year old And thanks to the warm up and what they learned during drawing with the graphite, you can already see them implementing new skills. 6 year old And we had lots and lots of flowers. The above artist did not like her charcoal, she stated it was a big blob. Can you imagine? Look at the layers in this! I love it but I always tell the kids it doesn't matter what anyone other than them think of their artwork and so let it stand that this was something she was not happy with in the end. Hopefully if she looks at it later on, she will change her mind and wonder why her initial response was not to like it. I know I have done that more than once with artwork I finally put aside when feeling negatively toward it. 8 year old 8 year old 9 year old 11 year old I had shared with the campers how Emily Carr had done her charcoals while in the forest during the summer and that she would then look at these and turn them into paintings in the winter when it was cold and rainy and she couldn't get outside anymore. And then asked them to take their charcoals and turn them into acrylic paintings. 11 year old I think all the campers enjoyed working the same image in different mediums. 9 year old 8 year old 8 year old 6 year old 8 year old 5 year old There are some amazing works of art in this series, so many exciting interpretations of abstracting natural elements. I so enjoy looking at what each young camper took away from Emily Carr and how they used Carr for inspiration in their own unique way. With it pouring down rain outside, this was the perfect way to spend a day enjoying the woods and nature.

***Great news! I'm turning my coloring pages into a beautiful coloring book and journal, which will be published and ready to ship just in time for Christmas! If you're interested, you can pre-order now on Kickstarter!*** Happy Sunday! This week's coloring page comes from Micah 6:8 "He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?" Sometimes I think we like to make long lists for ourselves of all the things we think the Lord requires of us - all the things we're supposed to be and do - when really it all boils down to the basics. If we can do these, everything else grows naturally from that. I think it's when we get it backwards, when we try to force all the to-do stuff without grounding ourselves in these basic principles and the 'why' of discipleship that we start to feel overwhelmed and even inauthentic. I'll be putting this one away in my mental file of things to remember when I get feeling that way, so I can take a deep breath and begin again. To download this free coloring page, just right click on the image below and save it to your computer. Feel free to share, and have a wonderful week!
When students read a book they enjoy, they complete a book recommendation form. It’s a simple form that is designed to take just a few minutes to complete. Students list basic information about the book, such as its title, author, and genre. Then, they write a short paragraph providing detailed reasons for why someone else would enjoy reading this book. Students sign their own names and put today’s date at the bottom before posting on our board. Once completed forms are posted to the board, other students can visit it to view recommendations. Different colored forms help students find books in their preferred genre and listing the specific genre helps students find the title in the classroom or school library. Notes on how students interact with the board are included with the product. Do you use book talks in your room? You know - those little commercials to entice your students to read new titles? How about your students - do they talk books too? If not, it’s time they start! This simple, free book recommendation resource can help get those important discussions about books started in your upper elementary classroom. This product includes notes for using in your classroom and several versions of the form. I absolutely love the addition of art projects in my classroom. Everything has a purpose though... practice following directions, a tie in to our unit, something that motivates kids to do their best. I'm a California teacher through and through, and learning about our California State Symbols is a big deal in my fourth grade classroom. I wanted to show you this coloring book I made for my class that we will work through during the school year. My plan is to have them color one symbol per month August through April, to be ready to put the books together for Open House in May. There are facts that are also included on each paper for reference. I know not everyone teaches in California, but I want to highly encourage you to use your own state symbols as Fun Facts for your students. They are so interested in these little odd pieces of information and to find out the backstory how these symbols came to be important. :) If you are a California teacher and want to see my coloring book up close, here's the link to it over on TPT. I hope it helps someone!
