In this “classic” Calvert project, sixth graders first learned about the history of tessellations (and artist M.C. Escher, who is famous for his unique tessellations like the one pictured here) before creating one of their own. Tessellations, which have been around for thousands of years, are a special kind of pattern/design made from repeating shapes called polygons (closed shapes with three or more sides). In tessellation designs, congruent polygons fit together like jigsaw puzzle pieces that repeat again and again- they could go on forever! Students painted their unique tessellation designs using acrylic paint in a warm or cool color scheme of their choice. To create the portrait, on a separate piece of paper, students traced the light and dark areas of their faces using a projected digital photograph. Using the opposite color scheme from their background, they painted their portrait, making sure that the light and dark areas were highly contrasting. Here are the colorful finished pieces!
Start with folding paper into 6-8 boxes. Trace hand with pencil. Trace finds with pencil. Outline hand with black permanent marker. Marker line = change color Pencil line = change design * no solid colors * no white, black, or neutral I taught the 6th graders the difference between cool and warm color on the color wheel. I assigned them the task of using a tracing of their hands to fill in with warm or cool colors only. I challenged them to use lines only, but allowed them to use shapes as well as part of their designs. As part of the advice, I had them only get a collection of whatever colors they work working with at one time (a pile of warm only or a pile of cool only) so they do not accidentally grab the wrong color and mess up the lesson goal. 6th grade 2023 Madelynn, Anden, Emilia, Shaylee, Alissa, Olivia Shaunna, Victoria “Jeremiah”, Addison Bella G., Harper, Tatum Sunshine Eduardo-6th grade 2022 Melanie C.- 7th grade 2022 Elva- 6th grad Fall 2021 Kinslee, Kylar, Evy, Adelyn, Kenix & Emily Jazmyn and Kelly Kalie R., Vanessa A., Zane S. & Avery 2021 6-8th grade above, 1st period 2020 Jaylee, Isac, Josie Michael, Francisco and Jorja My teacher examples for the 6th grade... Use a lighter shade of the warm or cool color solid in background, then go over the solid with a darker color. This looks like it takes a long time and hard work, but is actually pretty easy. Or, use thick stripes rather than solid....

Hu Jundi was born in 1962 in Juilin Province, China. He graduated from Sichuan Fine Art Institute in 1984. Hu’s work has been exhibited and collected in China and other Asian countries as well as in Europe and America. His work is different from the oil paintings that we often see. His brilliance is in the harmonious blend of traditional Chinese brushwork with the unmatched depth of oils. His paintings are completely Chinese, with colors of the Sichuan environment. They are harmonious with incomplete borders. So when we first see these paintings, we feel the combination of the light, color and flow of the East, but the oils give them a more universal, lasting appeal. Hu is one of the first and very few Chinese painters that are able to brilliantly meld the two cultures together with complete integrity. Hu’s work is full of dense Chinese colors -- the lush atmosphere and Sichuan’s warm moisture are floating in the paintings — and this hooks the audience instantly to his canvas melodies. He paints elegant, serene and beautiful Sichuan women. The attire is classical Sichuan Chinese, but there is an appeal that goes beyond. He does not use models. He paints the character in his mind, searching from a person in his life. He chooses the most wonderful moment in his mind and paints it. Catching a moment -- this is the Chinese painting skill. It is much more difficult to do it with oil paintings. It took years of patient trial and error, along with his immense talent, to achieve this mastery. COMMENTS FROM THE CRITICS: “Most talented master. His work is full of dense Chinese colors and lush atmosphere. Sichuan’s warm and moist air is floating through his paintings. I was captivated instantly to the melodies on his canvas.” -- Zhong Biao, Artist, Director, Chonqing Art Museum. “Hu’s works are beautiful inside and outside because he knows how to control emotions with a brush. He has the ability to ‘fathom’ a word and image, go deeper into the meaning to convey it with paint: it is thinner here, it is thicker there, it is deeper here and it is misty there... “He uses his eyes to “listen” like a musician. These paintings tell and color the poem.” -- Zhao Benjia. “Songs and poems touch me, I want to paint the poem and the song” – Hun Jun Di. In fact the poems and the songs are in his heart. He expresses them on the canvas. http://www.mandarinfineart.com/hujundibio.htm

This is the comprehensive guide to Warm Spring in the 12 season system of color analysis. Learn about the warm spring color palette, warm spring capsule wardrobe, best and worst colors for warm spring, and more.
Colours are often described in terms of temperature as “cool” or “warm”. These psychological associations have a lot to do with certain physical characteristics, like red-fire-warm, yellow-sun-warm or blue-ice-cold, green-shade-cold. Still, the feeling of warm and cool is relative. The same color might appear cool in the company of warm yellows and oranges and warm surrounded by cool greens. (I’ll look at it closer later this month when talking about contrasts.) When thinking of the colour wheel, it can be roughly divided in half: warm colours stretching from red-violet to yellow and cool colours from violet to yellow green. Before we go deeper into it, I’d like to make a small exercise. Please prepare a grid of 6 x 7 squares. Something like it is on the photo. Take your coloured pencils or pastels or even your scraps of fabric and fill the squares of the horizontal rows as follows: · 1. row: only cool colours (don’t think much, this is not a beaux-arts competition, chose your colours randomly.) · 2. row: 5 cool colours and 1 warm colour. · 3. row: 4 cool colours and 2 warm colours · 4. row: 3 cool colours and 3 warm colours · 5. row: 2 cool colours and 4 warm colours · 6. row: 1 cool colour and 5 warm colours · 7. row: only warm colours. When finished look at the composition. Again try to collect adjectives to describe the sensation you get with the warm colours on the top and with the cool colours on the top. Here is my example: The warm colours feel much heavier. When they are down, the composition feels stable and static. The top is more airy. Are the warm colours by the majority on the top, our sensation of balance is disturbed. A feeling of insecurity, incertitude is coming up and I expect those “heavy bricks” to fall down and crush all the airy cool bricks below. So this is again a knowledge we can use consciously in our design. It works also on the horizontal level. Everything else being equal, warm colours generally “come forward” in the space. Cool colours, on the other hand, reced in our vision. Painters often take advantage of this aspect to create the illusion of depth. Cezanne used this so called colour-perspective very often, especially in his still lifes: Just two more examples. First Miro’s Figures at Night Guided by the Phosphorescent Tracks of Snails. And second a Gee's Bend Quilt von Luisiana P. Bendolph: „Housetop“ Variation In both the reds are just coming forward, creating the impression of space. Contrast of temperature can also be used to create mood. Though reactions to colours are somewhat subjective and different from culture to culture, general tendencies apply. Arrangements dominated by cool colours typically evoke feelings of peace, quiet, serenity, and tranquility. Warm arrangements often bring about feelings that are relatively active and dynamic, from vivacity and joy to anger.
