Day 26: Today's topic - rubbings. I admit I've never taken a rubbing of a cover, but I have taken impressions of plenty of stencils, shoe bottoms, anaglypta, and gravestones. The manhole covers in my town are not that interesting, and there are lots of hard edges which will likely...

You need: wooden chair for each student or one chair for two students water-based paint in various colours paint trays paint rollers brushes sandpaper ammonia newspapers Redecorating chairs is a nice activity for older kids. Ask students to bring an old wooden chair or buy some old ones in a recycle store. Discuss how to redecorate a chair. How do you manage that? Do you choose a theme, for instance flowers or sports, or do you want to decorate it with motives? You can even choose an artist. How about a Keith Haring chair, or a Piet Mondrian table? What colours do you use? How do you draw the design on the chair? Just drawing or is it better to use a template? Create a design on paper, on which you see colours and patterns / designs clearly. Put the chairs on newspapers. Sand the chair and make it completely greaseproof with a cloth and ammonia water. Let dry. Draw the design first with pencil and paint it. The table below is redecoratied by a group of students. For the tabletop they used chalkboard paint. This table is still in our classroom as an instruction table. Useful, because we can write on it! All furniture is redecorated by students of 11-12 years old

You need: white drawing sheet A4 size tempera paint scissors glue black marker black paper for background Start by folding the white sheet of paper in half and open it up again. Then drop blobs of tempera paint in three different colours somewhere around the middle of your paper. Don't put the paint to close to the edges. Fold the sheet and press by firmly moving hands around. This movement will move the paint around more than just folding. Open the paper and dry flat. Look carefully at this creature. Outline the creature with a black marker. Look for typical shapes, like arms, eyes, ears etc. and trace them with a marker. The drawing should be totally symmetrical. Cut the creature, leaving half cm white around the black lines. Paste it on a coloured background. Made by students of grade 4
This week, kindergarten continued their exploration of line, and started these fun line paintings! We used a new medium, to them, oil pastels and tempera cakes. 😄 Here's how we did it! Materials: Sax 90lb paper Crayola Oil Pastels Jack Richeson Semi-Moist tempera cakes First, we reviewed the different types of lines. Then, I showed them how to draw the lines from side to side of their (vertical) paper. I also talked about how you need to make the lines dark with the oil pastels, or they won't show up as well, when you paint. After that, I went over each color with the tempera cakes paint. I used rainbow colors, but told them they could use different colors if they liked. Many of them have not ever painted before, so we discussed how to hold a paint brush on the grip part of the handle, and to not get on the metal part of the brush. (As Cassie Stephens says, "the DANGER ZONE!") We go over the process of DIP, WIPE, and SWIRL, in the tempera cakes. We dip it in the water, wipe it on the rim of the cup, and swirl our brushes gently in the paint. We wanted our paint to go side to side as well, and try to stay in the lines we created. Here's some great artists from Mrs. Garcia's kindergarten class! Stay tuned for more awesome art! After the kids get done painting, we're going to use shapes (another element of art) to turn them into monsters! inspired by Georgetown Elementary's blog! I'll get them to draw the monster shape, on the back, with me Then, we'll draw the shapes out on black and white paper. If they want to go a step further, they can add accessories! Ms. Placha's class has some super cut and scary monsters!! Great job Mrs. Garcia's class! Here's some scary cute little monsters from Mrs. C. Campbell's class! Here's some super spooky, and precious monsters from Mr. Gonzalez' class! Here's Mrs. Kerr's adorable little monsters! “Lauren Stacey is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon.com.”

Yes. I'm the kind of art geek that takes a photo of the show statement because...well...the statement says it much better than I could paraphrase or summarize. I'll let you in on another little secret - what took to me this exhibit was the prospect of seeing more of Dorothy Caldwell's work. She is the one, after all, who has turned mending into art in our time. The Japanese have been doing it for centuries with their exquisite boro, yet boro was done for functional purposes, not artistic ones. As with each exhibit I've viewed so far, there has been a handful of works that spoke to me, captured my attention and creative imagination, grabbed me and didn't want to turn loose. The same was true of Ilaria Margutti's magnificent Mend of Me series. Ilaria Margutti, Mend of Me, 2009 embroidery on canvas statement accompanying Ilaria's work To view other works by Ilaria click here. Her web site is in Italian, but the photos of her work transcend any spoken language. To view my photos in a larger format, just double click on the one you want to view. Enjoy!
We have been experimenting a lot with watercolors lately. Something about seeing the colors mix and blend together is incredibly satisfying! By Kellie Day in Art Tutorials > Painting Tutorials I’ve always been fascinated by encaustic art and the eerie, soft look it has. All those layers of wax are incredibly intriguing, and up until recently, were a complete mystery to me as to how they were created. Just to give you an example, here’s a close-in detail of an encaustic piece entitled Fire Divided by encaustic artist and teacher Shawna Moore. Amazing, isn’t it? So smoky and soft, and textured! For those […]
