For many of my fifth grade students, learning about and creating their own Hundertwasser inspired art was the best ever lesson.
It’s no secret that I love a great budget-friendly, time-saving DIY home decor project. If I see a piece of art that I really want in our home and know that I can make it myself for less money and a little time – I usually try it. This lead to my latest creation. I used a super simple method to make a personalized hand lettered canvas that turned out beautifully! It is also week 2 of the One Room Challenge hosted by Calling It Home and I have updates on what I have been working on for my modern farmhouse girl’s room makeover. I’ve purchased a few items for my daughter’s room and I’m so excited about how everything is coming together so far. If you follow me on Instagram you will be able to see some sneak peeks of my progress. You’ll definitely want to stick around for the next few weeks to see the reveal! UPDATE: Here are the links for the remaining weeks and the full reveal! Week One | Week Three | Week Four | Week Five | Week Six Reveal! I admire artists that do hand-lettering with ease – it is a beautiful art […]

Knowing that so many of us are teaching and creating remotely, I thought it would be fun to do a little art teacherin' online. I shared yesterday all of the resources of mine that are free and able for you to use if you need to prepare art lessons for at home artists. However, I wanted to create something fresh and new and do a little LIVE art teaching as well. So...here's what I came up with: Robot Week! What's Robot Week? Well, it will be a daily dose of creating centered around the theme of Robots. I'll kick it off on Monday this this lesson that I'll be doing LIVE but I will also attempt to archive to my YouTube channel. For this first LIVE, I'll probably go for about 30-45 minutes. We'll just play it by ear. If you and your young artists can make it, great! You can join me on my Facebook page here or on my Instagram here! Big thanks to our sponsor Dixon Ticonderoga for joining the fun! Free How to draw Robots resource for you! To practice, inspire or color! In my art room, we call these Idea Sheets. This one is yours here! Mitch said I should make y'all a coloring sheet...so here you go! On Tuesday, I won't be live but I will be posting a video on how to create robots that look more three-dimensional on my YouTube channel! Again, simple supplies can be used or swapped out for whatever you have on hand. I am super stoked about this one, stay tuned! I know we probably all have a couple of cereal or snack boxes laying around. For that reason, why not try your hand at a collagraph rubbing? It's when you cut and glue shapes to a surface, lay a piece of paper on top and then, using a "sleeping" crayon (one on its side), rub over your design. I then added a watercolor wash to some of mine! It's a Build-Your-Own-Bot kind of Wednesday! What to do with that cereal box collage? Well, on Thursday, I'll show you how to cover it in foil and make a print with just markers and water! Oh yeah, this one's magical! On the final day of Robot Week, we'll make a collage with one of my favorite papers to collage with: business envelopes! They have the coolest patterns and designs. I do hope you'll join the fun! If you do, I would love to see what you and your awesome artists create. You can email me your images at [email protected] and I'll try to feature them right here!

SAILOR JERRY TATTOO DESIGNS (FLASH) FINE ART PRINT - So, this is the one I did for myself that actually hangs in my house. I wanted it to be more of a piece of art than to be poster. Which is why I choose to make the prints on a fine art paper. It is a 24" x 36" image size with a variety of Sailor Jerry Collins Tattoo Flash. I did add the slight coffee stains to the background (I don't know I just like it that way). Makes it appear that much more vintage. But if you or someone you love is a tattoo or (Sailor Jerry) fan. Than this makes the coolest gift to yourself or them. And if you don't like it, you can return it and I'll refund your money. (You pay return shipping, sorry.) There is an extra 1/2 inch border around all sides. I did this so that if you are using a professional framer to frame the item, they can choose to trim that 1/2 inch or keep it depending on if you have chosen to use a matt on the print in the frame. If you are buying a standard 24"x36" frame, you can just trim off the extra border and it will easily fit into the frame. This is a professional Giclee print using archival pigment inks, and is printed on Hahnemuhle Fine Art Photo Rag (which is very much like a hot press watercolor paper). It is UNFRAMED (the picture with the frame is an example of it framed). THERE IS NO WATERMARK ON THE ACTUAL PRINT. :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: PLEASE BE AWARE THAT BECAUSE OF THE RIDICULOUS INCREASES IN SHIPPING COSTS, UNFORTUNATELY WE NO LONGER OFFER FREE SHIPPING ON ITEMS THAT MEASURE OVER 22 INCHES IN WIDTH. (WE HAVE ONE PERSON TO THANK FOR THIS AS OF APRIL 3rd 2022... OUR CURRENT POSTMASTER LOUIS DEJOY.) :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: TO ALL INTERNATIONAL BUYERS - PLEASE BE AWARE THAT BECAUSE OF THE SITUATION WITH THE CORONAVIRUS, YOU PACKAGE MAY BE DELAYED DUE TO DELIVERY FLIGHT RESTRICTIONS TO CERTAIN COUNTRIES. I HAVE NO IDEA WHICH COUNTRIES THAT INCLUDE. ONLY THAT I HAVE BEEN TOLD BY THE POST OFFICE TO EXPECT DELAYS. Your print will ship within 2 business days in a sturdy tube. Painting with kindergarten...ahhhh. It's kinda crazy to think that one can experience literally ALL OF THE EMOTIONS in one 30 minute class period: happiness, fear, chaos-management anxiety, bliss, fright, horror and so much more. I decided to dive into painting with my kindergarten for their second art project (you can see our first day projects here) and I thought I'd share a little of what my lesson looks like. If it strikes you as familiar, that is because it's not that different from how I introduce painting to all of my students. Before I dive in to that, I have quite a bit to say about kindergarten. You can take a listen to my last two episodes all about kindergarten here: And here: And here's me teaching painting to kindergarten on the very first day: So much silly, so little time! Let me share with you about this lesson. In the first 30 minute art class, you see me introduce my students the concept of The Store. In my art room, that is the supply gathering table. I also introduce how to go about using painting supplies properly...and that's it. If I continued to do much more talking, the kids wouldn't have any time to create! We will be reading The Dot the following art class and making sure to finish (if not complete) and signing our work of art. In case you are wondering, I never mention having the kids write their name on their papers up to this point. That is because I've been doing it for them. As they are working, I have been going around, pushing their chairs closer to the supplies and jotting their names on the backs of their papers. From here on out, I'll be teaching them to do this. We'll also be looking at Kandinsky very soon. But, like I said, on this first day, our focus was just to get them painting and painting properly (meaning how to hold their brush and how not to mix up the paints). Now, in case you are looking to do this lesson with your students, I just so happened to be gifted a box of dots. That's what's in the center of these papers. Little precut concentric circles that I simple glued to the middle of each 12" square of paper. Last year, when I didn't have those dots, I just used sticker dots from the dollar store (the kind used for pricing yard sale items). The reason I like using a dot as the start as it gives the kids a little spot to begin painting around. AND, of course, because of Dot Day! If you are in need of some Dot Day activities, you can search my blog or stay tuned. I'll be posting all of my faves right here tomorrow!
Negative leaf print by one of my second grade students earlier this year. Hey, guys! This post has been very popular on my blog...if you are interested in other leaf-y projects, look at my Leaf Relief project and my Pressed Leaf Project as well. Thanks! I don't know what it's like where you live, but here in Tennessee, we are experiencing spring-like weather. For the most part. I mean it did snow the last two Saturdays (and, in Tennessee, "snow" means just a few flakes and a couple of inches) but the other day it was 78 degrees. Crazy, right? For that reason, I've got touch of spring fever. You too? Well then you might enjoy this leafy printmaking project I did at the beginning of the year with my second graders. It's simple, scientific, beautiful and fun...okay, enough talking about me (!), on with the lesson. For this project, you'll need the following: gelatin, not Jell-o. Most grocery stores carry a brand called Knox which sells in boxes of 16 pouches. cookie sheets printmaking brayer, sold at most craft stores printing ink variety of leaves paper Print pulled from the same printing tray, this time the positive version. The night before you begin, you'll need to prepare your sheets of gelatin. To do that, bring about 3-4 cups of water to a boil. Once boiling, whisked one pouch of gelatin into the pot. You don't want any clumps of gelatin, so whisk like there's no tomorrow. You'll end up adding about 12-15 pouches of gelatin into that one pot. Sorry, I'm not into exact measurements. Which could explain a lot about my cooking. If there are any remaining unwhiskable clumps, remove them with a spoon. Pour mixture into a cookie sheet filling it about 1". Leave uncovered over night. If you see any bubbles in the cookie sheet, pop them or remove with a spoon. For my class of 20 students, I made three trays. Pulling the first print always managed to get oohhhh's and aahhhh's aplenty. The following day, we were ready to print. The surface of the gelatin was squishy yet very firm, perfect for holding our printing ink. I think I can explain this best in steps, so here you go: Using a brayer and printing ink, cover surface of gelatin in ink. Place leaves onto the ink-covered cookie sheet with the veiny side down. I don't recommend using anything with pine needles because that will puncture the gelatin. But experiment, you never know! Once leaves are in place, lay paper on top of cookie sheet and rub (er, we call it "massage") the paper. Pull paper off, as you see in the above photo, and viola! You have your first print! Notice how clear the gelatin looks. All of the ink that was once on the tray is now on the paper. I love her dainty fingers pulling up the second print. So sweet. Now for the second print: Gently remove all of the leaves from the tray. It's best to pull them out by the end of the stem. Place a new sheet of paper over the now-empty cookie sheet and rub. Pull second print which will be a positive image of the first. Looks like a black and white photo, don't you think? Once both prints have been pulled, re-ink the tray and begin the process all over again. With a class of 20 students and 3 pans of gelatin, about 10 kids were able to print per half an hour class. The pans of gelatin can last about two days with an endless amount of printing. I tried to cover the gelatin and keep it for a little longer, but condensation droplets created strange little craters on the surface. If left uncovered for too many days, it begins to dry and crack. For that reason, if you plan to do this project for longer than a couple of days, you'll just need to prepare more gelatin pans the night before. Our second go-round of printing involved using white ink on black paper. Just as pretty. This project is so easy and the results so stunning that everyone is successful. I've now had a couple of craft get-togethers and this is always a hit. Once those leaves start growing in your neck of the woods, I do hope you'll give it a shot! I love the photo negative quality of this print.
