Celebrating Art Beads, Inspiring Those Who Use Them.
Aniela Sobieski is intrigued by “the human impulse to self-decorate,” a fascination that permeates every aspect of her portraiture. Evoking both baroque paintings and contemporary fashions, Sobieski adorns women and the occasional dog with elaborate makeup and sculptural accessories placed conspicuously to mask the subject’s features. She seamlessly maps classic still lifes and sparse landscapes directly onto the sitter’s face, often highlighting the natural shape of the eye and coating the figure’s lips in bold red. More

Recuerda a qué olía, cómo era la ropa que llevaba y qué sentiste al ver que se despojaba de ella. Recuerda cómo palpitaba tu corazón, si era de día o de noche

Filipino artist Olan Ventura creates lavish acrylic paintings in the tradition of 17th century Dutch still lifes. Replicating the smallest details of iconic works such as Jan Davidsz de Heem’s Vase of Flowers (c. 1660), Ventura veers off course with striking glitches and drips that shoot off the canvas edges, seeming to pull grapes, lobsters, and roses from the past into the present. A statement on Yavuz Gallery explains that Ventura is interested in identity, technology, popular culture. More

Brooklyn artist, Jack Henry gathers commonplace found objects and transforms them into multi-media sculptural works he calls, “monuments to post-industrial America”. Characterized by colorful abstractions, the process behind his signature “Core Sample” sculptures begins with building a vertical mold out of plywood and plastic, which he then uses to cast a variety of collected objects in layers of resin, cement and urban debris. The results are colorful, chaotic, and intricately-textured, resembling geographic core samples from an urban landfill. Bio: Jack Henry was born in 1984 in Jackson, MS, USA and raised in the suburbs of Flint, Michigan. He received his BFA from Florida Atlantic University, Boca Raton and his MFA from University of Maryland, College Park with a concentration in sculpture/installation. His work has been shown throughout the US including recent shows at Lesley Heller Workspace, New York; Black and White Gallery, Brooklyn; Storefront Bushwick, Brooklyn; Dodge Gallery, New York; Nudashank, Baltimore; Fjord Gallery, Philadelphia; Space Gallery, Portland ME; Glass Curtain Gallery, Columbia College, Chicago; La Esquina Gallery, Kansas City; Kunsthalle Galapagos, Brooklyn; Ground Floor Gallery, Brooklyn; Castle Gallery, College of New Rochelle, New York; Radiator Gallery, Long Island City. His work has been written about in the Chicago Tribune, the L Magazine, Hyperallergic, Beautiful/Decay, ArtFCity, and New American Paintings. Jack Henry has lived and worked in Brooklyn, NY since 2010.
