Sandro Botticelli (Alessandro di Mariano di Vanni Filipepi), Florenz 1445 - 1510 Adorazione dei Magi / Anbetung der hl. drei Könige / Adoration of the Magi (1475 - 76) Sandro Botticelli erlernte zuerst das Goldschmiedehandwerk und wurde dann Schüler von Fra Filippo Lippi. Sein Werk zeigt Einflüsse von Andrea del Verrocchio, Antonio del Pollaiolo, Perugino und Ghirlandaio. Botticelli arbeitete überwiegend in seiner Heimatstadt Florenz, wo er wichtige Impulse vom Kreis der Humanisten um Lorenzo de'Medici, Il Magnifico, erhielt, und zum führenden Maler der Stadt wurde. Im Geist der Frührenaissance und des Humanismus malte Botticelli, beeinflusst von Filippo Lippi, Masaccio und Antonio Pollaiuolo, religiöse Bilder, Altarbilder sowie Bilder aus dem Themenbereich der griechischen Mythologie und Allegorien mit Gegenwartsbezug. Von herausragender Bedeutung ist seine Porträtkunst, die nachhaltig das Image der Medici und ihrer Parteigänger geprägt hat. Sein Spätwerk trägt emotional expressive Züge mit Rückbezug auf die Gotik. Einige Elemente seiner Malerei wurden später von den Präraffaeliten im 19. Jahrhundert wieder aufgegriffen. Auch der Jugendstil nahm in Linie und Ornament Anleihen von ihm auf. (Quelle: www.wikipedia.de) Botticelli malte die Anbetung der hl. drei Könige für die der Epiphanie geweihten Kapelle der reichen Bankiersfamilie Del Lama in der Kirche Santa Maria Novella. Auftraggeber war Zenobi Del Lama, weshalb das Werk auch als Zenobi-Altar bezeichnet wird. Botticelli brachte darin nicht nur ein Selbstbildnis (rechts im gelb-braunen Mantel) sondern auch posthume Porträts von drei Generationen der Familie der Medici, seiner größten Förderer, unter. Cosimo il Vecchio kniet vor dem Madonna und dem Kind, und im Vordergrund sind seine Söhne Piero il Gottoso im roten, hermelingefütterten Mantel und zu dessen Rechten Giovanni dargestellt. Dahinter steht in einem kurzen schwarzen Gewand Lorenzo il Magnifico und auf der gegenüberliegenden Seite steht mit nachdenklicher Miene sein jüngerer schwarz-rot gekleideter Bruder Giuliano, der beim Pazzi-Attentat ums Leben kam. Das Thema der Anbetung der Könige war den Medici sehr wichtig, denn sie zogen jedes Jahr als orientalische Könige verkleidet mit der Campagnia de'Magi durch die Stadt Florenz.
