The present work comes with general object description stating the general attributes of the artwork. Offering a fine watercolor, gouache and ink painting depicting a landscape at horse race track. Dufy, inspired by Matisse and resembling him in his devotion to rhythmic line, pure color and decorative effects, was a painter of great independence and originality, painting the most highly civilized subjects he could find, the elegant holiday places and famous events in French Riviera and Paris. The present scene of recreation and spectacle is done in the iconic bright colours thinly spread over a white ground, with objects sketchily delineated by sensuously undulating lines. The artwork appears to have a gallery stamp on verso, or it may be the name of the previous collection and a collection reference number next to it. Raoul Dufy's discovery of Fauvism was a revelation, and helped him to free color and line from their mimetic functions; his subsequent encounter with Cubism would inform his dynamic Art Deco fabric designs, employed by such famous couturiers as Paul Poiret. Later, the artist had settled upon what would become his hallmark stenographic style, combining deft and spontaneous outlines with broad and boundless areas of vivid color. Raoul Dufy was a painter associated with the Fauves, who were known for their use of wild and vivid colours. He worked in a variety of media, including oils, watercolour (he produced over 6000), gouache, textiles and woodcuts. His paintings include many scenes of luxury and pleasure, and are characterised by vivid colours, calligraphic brush marks, brightly coloured backgrounds and a sense of joie de vivre, luxury and pleasure.Even the great modernist writer Gertrude Stein was lyrical about this quality of his art, saying succinctly: "One must meditate about pleasure. This image depicts a festive city street in Nice, France, during the National Holiday of Bastille Day. During his life, Raoul Dufy traveled often within France, painting views of the Mediterranean city of Nice, as well as scenes of horse races and regattas. Throughout the 1920s, Dufy worked in a variety of materials, producing ceramics, tapestry hangings, and large-scale architectural decorations. His commission for the 26th Venice Biennale won him the International Grand Prix for painting in 1952, a year before his death on March 23, 1953 in Forcalquier, France.

Artist: Raoul Dufy Medium: Lithographic Poster, 1957 Dimensions: 29.5 x 19.5 in / 75 x 49.5 cm Classic Poster Paper - Perfect Condition A This lithographic poster was designed after a gouache by Raoul Dufy, "Le Grand Concert" 1948, for the second Festival of Painting and Sculpture in 1957 in the town of Vichy, France, which was sponsored by the Lions Club International.  Grand Concert is one of a series of orchestral scenes that Raoul Dufy commenced at the beginning of the 1940s. Born into a musical family – Dufy’s father was a part-time organist and church choir conductor, and two of his brothers were musicians – the artist was immersed in the world of music from an early age, and had first depicted an orchestra in 1902. Depicting the orchestra from above, Dufy has painted an array of musicians in the middle of their performance. Painted with rich tones of red and yellow, Grand orchestre demonstrates the artist’s distinctive use of colour: over broad swathes of colour, Dufy has drawn the outlines of figures and their instruments, creating the compositional structure of the scene. Like notes on a musical score, the rows of performers, including violinists, flutists and cellists, are depicted in a frenetic flurry of lines, giving a sense of animated movement and dynamism to the painting.

Printed signature Dimensions: 30 x 48 cm Condition : Excellent Raoul Dufy Born in 1877, the French painter Raoul Dufy was one of the more controversial contributors to the Fauvism movement. Dufy’s paintings are a celebration of luxury and color, a style that helped Dufy carve his niche in the artistic landscape. PERSONAL LIFE Raoul Dufy was born in Le Havre in 1877. He was part of a very large family, and finances were somewhat difficult in the family. Dufy was lucky to be born during a vibrant time in the French art community. As a young man, he studied at the Ecole Municipale des Beaux-Arts du Havre. During his studies, Dufy became friends with fellow artist Othon Friesz. He rented a studio with Friesz at one point. In 1911, Dufy married Eugenie Brisson. He struggled with arthritis for much of his life, relying on cortisone treatments to allow him to continue painting. CAREER In 1900, Dufy received a scholarship that allowed him to go to Paris. While attending the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Dufy was inspired by the many different art movements that were coalescing in France at the time. He experimented with many different styles during his artistic career. In 1903, Dufy first exhibited his work at the prestigious Salon des Independents. During this time, his art showed the influence of the Impressionists. His oil painting, Carnival on the Grands Boulevards, is one example of this early Impressionist work. By 1905, however, Dufy was drawing most of his inspiration from the creative, daring Fauvists. He also experimented with Cubism, working with Georges Braque. The variety of styles began to merge into Dufy’s unique vision as an artist. Completed in 1910, Mer et Nuages shows Dufy’s bold, playful use of bright colors. It also illustrates Dufy’s fondness for portraying beautiful and luxurious scenes, particularly French seaside tableaus. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, Dufy developed a style that blended crisp, calligraphic lines with generous splashes of color. Le Chateau et la Grille and Le Retour des Ragates illustrate elements of this style. Painting was not Dufy’s sole interest. He was extremely far-ranging in his talents. Dufy created woodcut engravings to illustrate books. Later, he worked with the renowned designer Paul Poiret to create patterned fabrics. Dufy even designed theater sets and scenery. Although some critics found Dufy’s work too effervescent and not serious enough, the painter gained a reputation for his bright, versatile body of work. less
