An exploration of emptiness in art, from 'Horror Vacui' to minimalist expressions, and its profound impact on perception and creativity.
I always love to see all the was that art teachers are teaching their students about the life and work of Dutch Painter, Piet Mondrian. Broadway Boogie Woogie, 1942-43 This is my 4th year teaching Mondrian to my 2nd Graders and Every year I have done it differently. Here is what I did this year... We, of course, learned about HORIZONTAL, VERTICAL, AND DIAGONAL LINES. Students used a ruler to create 3 mini artworks. Work 1 used only Horizontal and Vertical lines. Work 2 used only diagonal lines Work 3 used ALL 3. After drawing their 3 mini works, students traced their designs in Sharpie. Students practiced using their design eye to decide which spaces to fill in with Primary color marker and which spaces to leave blank. Next students experimented with Painters, paint pen markers from Elmer's, to make their works uniquely their own. Each student was then given a thin black strip to decide how to mount their 3 finished designs. I love how they came out!

Engage little artists in a project-based study of Piet Mondrian, lines and primary colors in this introductory unit of the Famous Artist series. Inside the unit you'll find a 19-page unit guide full of information and tips for teaching this series of art lessons to students in preschool through grade 2. The unit is broken down into three 40-minute sessions. For each session there is a guided presentation that has already been prepared for you and can be used via Google Slides or PowerPoint. The presentation also introduces and guides you through completion of a studio project and follow-up activity. The 66-page combined PDF and Google Slides full resource includes: An original digital storybook designed to expose students to famous artworks and details about Piet Mondrian A digital step-by-step studio project guide with clear directions, supply lists, and work sample photos A printable studio project follow-up activity A printable early finisher activity A digital lesson overview A printable self-assessment SUPPLIES White construction paper Red construction paper Yellow construction paper Blue construction paper School glue Scissors Cotton Swabs Pencil MORE ABOUT THE FAMOUS ARTIST SERIES FROM KIDS ART PROJECTS 101 This series is a project-based approach with ties to famous art and artists. The projects are designed for use with young children, and they heavily emphasize play and experimentation, but they also target specific skills, techniques, and understandings. Inside each structured unit the plans are organized into three to four 40-minute sessions and can be paced out in whatever way works best for your situation. This approach is awesome because it layers art history connections with guided instruction about the elements of art and principles of design. Each unit ultimately results in a completed art project. These projects were originally developed for use in a public school art room with kindergarten students, but have been adapted into a scripted PowerPoint format so that they can be easily utilized in a variety of settings and with a slightly broader age-range. WHY? Most school-age kids are ready to learn about famous art and artists! Such engagement exposes them to diverse pathways to success and creative expression. The problem is that figuring out HOW TO DO THIS WELL WITH YOUNG KIDS can be time-consuming and overwhelming. Teacher trainings, even well-organized ones, can leave you feeling ill-equipped for: Selecting kid-friendly masterpieces Translating art/artist facts in a way that feels accessible and engaging to little ears Making time for art history integration, in what is usually a very short time-allotment for hands-on artmaking Assembling supplemental resources (videos, stories, assessments, and early-finisher activities) Aligning famous art with hands-on projects Breaking hands-on projects into manageable and concise kid-friendly chunks The project packs in our Famous Artist Series do all that work for you! This resource will have you feeling more relaxed, prepared, and purposeful about engaging young kids in art learning! >>Click here to see all of the existing units in the Famous Artist Series Not sure where to start? This minimalist poster features Piet Mondrian's "Abstraction," characterized by geometric precision and bold lines. The abstract composition uses thick black lines, intersecting to form rectangles and squares with occasional pops of red and yellow. Embracing the Bauhaus style, this mid-century art piece exemplifies Mondrian's iconic approach to form and colour, making it a timeless addition to any design-savvy space.

These fun letters have been designed to mimic the abstract art of Piet Mondrian. You will have three versions of each letter. One with black, one without black to better define the straight lines used in this art, and one outline of each letter (transparent) that can be filled in based on the user's preferences. (All are seen at the top of the preview page - letter A) You can add them to any work! All png imaged letters have been saved in a zip file. Kinder art students have started studying the Element of Design of COLOR! We looked at Dutch artist Piet Mondrian and discussed how he used the three Primary Colors: red, blue, and yellow, as his main colors, and then added black and white to his compositions. We also identified some basic shapes in his artworks: squares and rectangles, as well as straight lines. We started with different sizes of red, blue, and yellow squares and rectangles, and tried to arrange them on our white papers in a satisfying way. Once we had our shapes arranged, we glued them down. The next art day, we added straight black lines using a stamp print method. These photos show students using a piece of cardboard and black paint to stamp their straight black lines in between the rectangles and squares.
