Carl Larsson in 1882 Carl Larsson (1853 – 1919) was born in 1853 in Stockholm, Sweden, to an extremely poor family, though his artistic talent emerged relatively early in his life. At the age of thirteen, his teacher at the school for the poor persuaded him to apply for enrolment at Principskolan, the preparatory department of the Swedish Royal Academy. During his first years there, he felt socially inferior, confused and shy. In 1869, aged sixteen, he was promoted to the “Antique School” of the same academy. There he gained confidence, and even became a central figure in student life; he also earned his first medal in life drawing. After the Academy Larsson worked as a caricaturist for the humorous paper Kaspar, and as a graphic artist for the newspaper Ny Ilustrerad Tidning. His annual income was sufficient to allow him to help his parents financially. After several years working as an illustrator of books, magazines and newspapers, he moved to Paris in 1877, where he spent several frustrating years as a hardworking artist, but without any success. Larsson was not eager to establish contact with the French progressive Impressionists; instead, along with other Swedish artists, he cut himself off from the radical movement of change. After two summers in Barbizon (in central France), the refuge of the plein-air painters, he settled down with his Swedish painter colleagues in 1882 in Grez-sur Loing, outside Paris, at a Scandinavian artists’ colony. It was there that he met the artist Karin Bergöö, who soon became his wife. This was to be a turning point in Larsson’s life. In Grez, he painted some of his most important works, now using watercolour, and very different from the oil painting technique he had previously employed. Karin Bergöö, artist and wife of Carl Larsson Carl and Karin had eight children and his family became Larsson’s favourite models. Many of the domestic interiors depicted were the work of Karin, who also worked as an interior designer. Their eight children were Suzanne (1884), Ulf (1887 – died aged 18), Pontus (1888), Lisbeth (1891), Brita (1893), Mats (1894 – died aged 2 months), Kersti (1896) and Esbjörn (1900). In 1888 the family was given a small house in Sundborn, Sweden by Karin’s father Adolf Bergöö. Carl and Karin decorated and furnished “Little Hyttnäs” according to their particular artistic taste. Through Larsson’s paintings and books “Little Hyttnäs” has become one of the most famous artist’s homes in the world. The house is now maintained by Larsson’s descendants and is open to tourists during the summer months. Swedish publisher Bonnier published “A Home” (1894) written and illustrated by Larsson containing full colour reproductions of his paintings of domestic life in “Little Hyttnäs”. However, the print runs of these rather expensive albums did not come close to that produced in 1909 by German publisher Karl Robert Langewiesche, entitled “The House in the Sun”. It became one of the German publishing industry’s best-sellers of the year, selling 40,000 copies in three months. His last monumental work, Midvinterblot (Midwinter Sacrifice), a 6 x 14 metre oil on canvas completed in 1915, had been commissioned for a wall in the National Museum in Stockholm (which already had several of his works adorning its walls). However, on completion it was rejected by the governing board of the museum. And still, it was probably the best thing that could have happened, because my intuition tells – once again! – that this painting, with all its weaknesses, will one day, when I am gone, be honoured with a far better placement.” Larsson admitted however, in the same memoirs, that the pictures of his family and home “became the most immediate and lasting part of my life’s work. Carl Larsson (1853-1919) Karin reading (1904) Karin is de tweede vrouw van Carl Larsson, een Zweedse schilder. Zijn eerste vrouw, Vilhelmina Holmgren, stierf in het kraambed bij de geboorte van hun tweede kind. Ook de twee kinderen uit dit eerste huwelijk stierven jong. Carl Larsson en Karin Larsson-Bergöö Karin Larsson, geboren Bergöö was kunstenares. Zij schilderde, weefde, ontwierp meubels en hield zich bezig met binnenhuisarchitectuur. Ze leerde Carl kennen in de kunstenaarskolonie in het Franse Grez-surLoing, net buiten Parijs. Uit die tijd een schilderij van Carl Larsson van een beeldenpark en één van de bouw van de Eiffeltoren die zojuist was begonnen. Van Karin heb ik één aquarel kunnen vinden. Karin Larsson-Bergöö, Boerin op het land Veel meer bekend zijn haar weef- en borduurproducten, zoals tafellakens, gordijnen, kussens, die ook terugkomen op de schilderijen van haar man. Hier een aantal voorbeelden uit hun huis in Sundborn Karin achter haar weefgetouw Tenslotte nog een voorbeeld van haar meubelontwerpen. Een schommelstoel ontworpen door Karin Larsson-Bergöö Het ontwerp is, in iets gewijzigde vorm nog steeds te verkrijgen bij IKEA Karin met één van haar kinderen Carl en Karin Hoewel haar man Carl veel meer bekendheid heeft verworven is er voor het leven van Karin toch ook nog steeds belangstelling. In 2009 verscheen over haar een biografie, Karin Larssons värld, geschreven door Lena Rydin. Samen kregen Karin en Carl, links een zelfportret, acht kinderen: Suzanne, Ulf, Pontus, Lisbeth, Brita, Matts, Kersti en Esbjörn. Door de kinderen kwam het kunstenaarschap van Karin op een laag pitje te staan. Wel bleef zij bezig met weven en de inrichting van hun eigen woonhuis. In Frankrijk had Larsson weinig succes, dus keerde het echtpaar terug naar Zweden. Larsson werd directeur van de kunstopleiding in Göteborg. Later verhuisde het gezin naar Lilla Hyttnäs (kleine hut) in Sundborn. Het huis was een geschenk van de de vader van Karin. Lilla Hyttnäs geschilderd door Carl Lilla Hyttnäs zoals het er nu uit interieur Lilla Hyttnäs Larsson (links) heeft veel aquarellen geschilderd, maar maakte ook muurschilderingen. Voor het Nationalmuseum in Stockholm maakte hij het monumentale schilderij Midvinterblot, dat teruggaat tot de Noorse mythologie waarbij de koning geofferd werd om een einde aan de hongersnood te maken. Het ontwerp viel eerst niet in de smaak. Het museum wilde het niet eens gratis hebben, zodat het uiteindelijk verkocht is aan een Japanner. Veel later is het weer teruggekocht en bevindt zich nu in het museum te Stockholm, waarvoor het bedoeld was. Midvinterblot Midvinterblot in het Nationalmuseum Stockholm De stijl van Carl Larsson is naturalistisch en doet mij soms denken aan de illustraties van Rie Cramer en Anton Pieck. Carl werkte in zijn begintijd ook als illustrator van boeken om de kost te verdienen. Op veel van zijn schilderijen figureerden zijn vrouw en kinderen. Ze zijn licht en vrolijk van kleur, in tegenstelling tot zijn gemoedstoestand. Carl had regelmatig last van depressies, die begonnen na de dood van zijn eerste vrouw en kinderen. De eerste woorden van zijn autobiografie Jag (Ik), die twaalf jaar na zijn overlijden verscheen luidden alsvolgt: “In het jaar 1853 kwam ik als doodgeboren kindje ter wereld. Toen wat later op de dag – het was 28 mei – het lijkje door een wat onvoorzichtige behandeling aan het huilen werd gebracht, kreeg men er iets meer belangstelling voor, en in de loop der jaren is die nog toegenomen.” Geen vrolijke Frans, zo te horen. Misschien juist door zijn sombere inslag, genoot hij extra van zijn tweede vrouw en schare kinderen. Dat lees ik in ieder geval af uit onderstaand schilderij. Zelfportret met dochter Brita Carl Larsson was een veelschilder. Lezende figuren, meestal zijn vrouw en kinderen, kwamen op nogal wat aquarellen en schilderijen voor. Karin met de oudste dochter Suzanne De jongste zoon Esbjörn met een oudere zus Esbjörn, lezen tijdens de bof Esbjörn Esbjörn wat jaren later Lisbeth Hier nog wat werken van Larsson waarbij niet wordt gelezen maar wel mensen met een boek of krant zijn afgebeeld.
